Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XI begins beta
Testing period for first 360 MMORPG begins, spots available to purchasers of Official Xbox Magazine.
Xbox 360 owners will soon get the opportunity to take a sneak peak of the world of Vana\'diel, as the Final Fantasy XI beta testing period for Microsoft\'s new console has officially begun. Gamers can register for the beta now at Square Enix\'s PlayOnline Web site, which handles all subscriptions for Final Fantasy XI.
After applying, gamers will need to get their hands on the February issue of The Official Xbox Magazine and its demo disc, which includes the beta versions of the original game and both the Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia expansion packs. The beta period will be free of charge to players, and the game can be logged onto using either a premium Gold or fee-free Silver Xbox Live account.
When the game goes live in May, Xbox 360 players will be able to rub elbows and swap healing potions with their PlayStation 2 and PC counterparts. But for the duration of the beta test, Xbox 360 users will be kept on their own servers. They will be able to interact with beta testers from Europe and Japan, however. While Square Enix has issued a list of known issues with the beta game, support for USB keyboards and mice has been included.
Originally released in mid-2002 for the PlayStation 2 in Japan, Square Enix\'s massively multiplayer online role-playing game has since migrated to PCs, the American PS2, and perhaps finally, the Xbox 360. Square Enix is promising enhanced visuals, audio, and other unique features for the game\'s debut on Microsoft\'s next-generation hardware.
Other versions of Final Fantasy XI have been rated T for Teen. The Xbox 360 edition is currently scheduled to hit stores in May. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more coverage.

Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
Why are we playing a beta of a game that was originally released in mid-2002! Shouldn\'t we be playing the FFXII beta?
I think it\'s pretty cool that 360 users will be able to play with PC and PS2 users. That\'s a great way of not splitting the gaming community.
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
You get what you can, rap. It\'s supposedly a good game, so why not throw some 360 gamers into a ring with the rest of the wizened MMOers already playing a popular game?
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
I smell sarcasm.
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
You gotta get your nose fixed. I baked frankness, not sarcasm.
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
Square knows how to do it.
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
Rayne:
How is it?
How did you get it?
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
It takes FOREVER (and by FOREVER I mean >2HRs) to install all the S/W to your HD. It uses about 5Gb. I bought this months issue of OXM and it has the disc in it. If I don\'t have to have the disc to play any of you may borrow it as the magazine was $10!!!!
It is cool I guess. I don\'t have that much experience with MMORPG so I really can\'t compare it to anything else. The controls are pretty easy and you are supposed to be able to hook up a USB Keyboard and use it.
There are a lot of people on so it is hard to get experience because everyone runs for the same kill. I am currently trying to find rabbit hides for some quest I stumbled upon. I still haven\'t found the chick I am supposed to give some voucher to for some money.........
I would really suggest a keyboard if you really want to chat as there is no voice chat. I played with one of my friends and it was just he and I in our party so we chatted through the XBL interface.
I don\'t know how long it will hold my attention. I am not good with these open ended games like Everquest and Morrowind. I need structure and have half an idea of what the goal is. I have a feeling if I don\'t find these two rabbit hides soon it won\'t last long. My Moogle (I think that is what he was called) who takes care of my Mog house is cute though :) I <3 him.
I only have 8Gb left on my HD and I see nowhere to uninstall this game if I don\'t like it! I will have to figure this out.............I figured it out. You uninstall PlayOnline Viewer and FFXI from the main main screen of the PlayOnline interface. WHOOOO!
And I figured out that I have to have the disc. The issue also comes with another demo disc with XBOX: Half-Life 2, Painkiller, Stubbs the Zombie (WHAT?!) and Winning Eleven 9. XBOX360: COD2 (it is a level from the British campaign in El Daba, Egypt). Also has an article on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
Wait, I have to write the blurb about Stubbs the Zombie: \" Moronically cited by the National Institute of Media and Family as promoting cannibalism, the watch groups don\'t realize that you play as a zombie, and zombies need brains to survive. Duh! Stubbs is a kooky, lighthearted 1950s sci-fi romp you\'re bound to love...with the Halo engine!\"
Ok, I am done, I promise!
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
How\'s Stubbs?
And no voice for FFXI!? Redonkulous!
How are the graphics now? I understood that the game has not aged gracefully...
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
FFXI isnt a great mmorpg.. its not a bad one either. They took the level system the wrong way.. takes way to long to level up. I played during beta and then on a free trail after game was released.. and wow, everquest, uo are all better than ff.. but ff is better than the other mmo\'s out there so its about the mid range i think anyways

Anyone else find this a little absurd?

I sold my XBOX to a Friend for a Christmas present for her son. So I can\'t play Stubbs, I don\'t really think I want to anyway .
The no voice thing really sucks. Wouldn\'t be so bad if I had a keyboard instead of my controller. But I would at least like to see voice when you are in a party.
The graphics don\'t look next gen.
And Celery is right, it takes forever to level up. I don\'t think it would be that bad if I wasn\'t restricted by my strength that I have to stay around the castle because I am only strong enough to take on \"woodland rabbits\" \"ding bats\" and some kind of worm. Also, there are so many new people on the server that every time an enemy spawns there are literally 2-4 people going after it.
One of my Friends (Lv13) tried to help me level up, but I would only get money and/or an item when he killed something. Every once and a while I would get 1 experience point. He ended up just following me around telling me what I could and couldn\'t attack and helping me if I got close to dying.
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
It\'s too bad you didn\'t play Stubbs. It got good reviews, but was considered very short and therefore, not a good investment. It was developed by Wideload Games, which is comprised of a bunch ex-Bungie employees. I\'m sorry, if you helped develop Halo, you automatically get respect in my book.
FF sounds lame. Thanks for going through all of that so I wouldn\'t!
Re: Final Fantasy XI Beta Testing
I honestly wouldn\'t have time for an MMO anyway, even if I wanted it. Thanks Rayne.
Do you still have that demo disc? Can you bring it to the next LAN (which will happen soon, right?) so I can borrow it?
