Check your 360's warranty online

Yep. I'm experiencing the "Open Tray" error again. I'm starting to lose count of all the XBOX 360's that have RRoD or have experienced this "Open Tray" error. This next box that I get may very well be the 8th different serial number I've had.

Recall that this time last year I surveyed the gamers on my buddylist. Of the 90 gamers on my XBOX Live buddy list 50 responded. 35 people have had to repair their XBOX at least once on my list - including someone that has had to send in their system 7 times.

Since then I've got more reports of failures from people that did and did not respond to my survey. Suffice it to say there's about a 50% failure rate of XBOX 360's on my list. That rate is probably higher once you factor in the people that did not take the time to respond to my survey or if you take into account every single box and serial number that has failed.

Also note that every time I go to a shipping company to deliver or pick up my XBOX 360, the workers know it's an XBOX 360. One lady tells me that she ships XBOX 360's back for repair everyday. She went on to tell me about Rock Band instruments that she had to ship back after Christmas of last year. These people know their job and they know what they are shipping.

Thanks to a tip from Disavowed last night, I checked my warranty on my Elite that I had repaired in December. My box is still under warranty - by only 5 days. Perfect timing for Disavowed to speak up.

I've registered my box and determined how much time I have remaining on my warranty. I also have gone ahead and submitted a repair request. It was honored instantly and now I've got a shipping label to send my box back in. Pretty fast service. It's the least Microsoft can do.

Damn, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a console with a more severe failure rate than the Xbox 360. I applaud Microsoft for extending warranties on the Xbox 360 and the people who've worked to make the Xbox 360 run better so it's less likely to RROD.

I have a strong feeling my Xbox 360 isn't going to last very long and that because I'm using the Nyko Intercooler (and I misused it) neither Nyko nor Microsoft would replace my console.

On one hand, it sucks your DVD drive failed again. On the other hand, it's good it happened w/in 90 days of the last time you sent it in...

I'm interested to see if the Jasper boxes continue to have problems like the Zephyrs did, and even the Falcons do (though not as bad as the Zephyrs). If it weren't for the Halo franchise, I would probably be a PS3 owner, instead of a 360 owner.

DELL is selling Arcade bundles for $160 and Elite bundles for $319. Pros are $240. Hard to pass up at a time like this.

I think I'm going to go ahead and buy a new box just to get the better build. It will be worth the peace of mind for me.

Thanks Disavowed for giving my an XBOX coffin. Sending it back today!

FYI, if you're buying a new box, online forums have pretty much confirmed that the new Arcade units from Dell are Jasper chips. Might be the surest way to get that peace of mind, short of confirming and paying more in-store somewhere. I noticed on my Jasper, the DVD drive is much quieter than my old Elite...

Thanks god mine has only failed once. And I have a launch box. I consider me a lucky, lucky man.

I still need a new one, though. I needs me some HDMI.

MS got my box today. Let's see how long it takes to get back to me.

Okay, I'm placing a wager of five Internet dollars that you won't get it back for at least two weeks...

Got an email that says MS has finished repairing my console. Maybe it will be here by the end of the next week.

That was fast.

I think we've had this discussion before (how fast MS usually gets returned Xboxen repaired and shipped back to their owners). And I recall thinking to myself, "They had better be efficient at it by now. They've only had to do it a few million times..."

UPS guy said that he returns 2 or 3 360's a day on average.
