Zune Pass users get to keep 10 songs indefinitely

Zune Pass users can now download 10 tracks per month in a protection-free MP3 format for permanent ownership, in addition the existing "all you can eat" subscription usage. For $15 a month users can download unlimited music and keep listening to it as long as they pay the monthly fee. Stop paying the fee and you get to keep the 10 songs per month that are a part of your Zune Pass. Each month, Microsoft will credit you with 10 free downloads.

Microsoft is also dropping the price of their flash-based players: The 4GB version will drop to $99, the 8GB model will drop by $10 to $139, and the 16GB model will sell for $179, down from $199.

90% of the Zune Marketplace library is in .mp3 format. The Zune Pass works with some non-Zune devices.

Well that's a step up from iTunes for sure. However, I read somewhere else that the 10 tracks you keep are DRMed. Does Microsoft have a web page that clarifies this?

Looks like Sony BMG and UMG songs will be DRM-free. I assume 2/3 of the library will have the WM DRM. I'm seeing reports that 1/3 of the Zune library is DRM-free, although I'm unsure if this means there are DRM-free versions of 1/3 of the library in addition to the DRM'd songs.

I recently got a zune. Theyre pretty cool. its just like a ipod minus the clock and calandar and it has a way of wirelessly downloading songs straight to your zune if you have a pass. Also in the future the games on it will be online. and also if theres someone close to you they can send you music and pictures. But you can only play the song 3 times.

THE POWER OF THE X

I'm pretty pumped about the Zune Pass. I'll write more about it in a few weeks after the newness has worn off. I can really see why Microsoft tried to brand the Zune as "the social". Unfortunately, it's an Apple web and Microsoft just lives on it.

That is a sweet Flash app.
