Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Free for Students

I know several THXers are students. Well, if you want a Windows 6 OS (same kernel as Vista) for free, Microsoft is offering Windows Server 2008 for free to all students. I have this installed, and tweaked to look just like Windows Vista. It performs just as well, or better than Vista.

For the download, and directions on how to verify that you are indeed a student, go here:

For tips and tweaks to get it running like a workstation, go here:

For anyone who doesn't qualify as a student, you can still go to Microsoft's website and download the evaluation version for free. Length of time to evaluate is 240 days.

I was looking at putting server 2003 on an old computer that runs our network right now. do you think that that 2000 will be better or will 2003 be good just do to the fact that the computer is old.

I think Server 2008 will suit your need just fine, mainly due to the fact that it has none of the "bloat" that Vista does, and should run just fine on an older machine. I have it running on a PC w/ a 2.0GHz AMD dual-core, and 2GB of RAM, and it screams. Microsoft's minimum system requirements say a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. I'm sure it won't be lightning fast on your old PC, but neither would Server 2003...

If you're still on the fence, you can download the trial version from Microsoft's website (also free), and evaluate it for yourself for up to 240 days. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and get the license key from DreamSpark, in case you want to keep it and activate it.
