The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.

What it Is
Geometry Wars 2 is the sequel to fun pick-up-and-play original. The controls are simple: Left stick moves, right stick shoot, triggers detonate a bomb. You shoot everything that isn't you.
What's Different
A couple new enemies (rocket ship, near-invulnerable orb, slow-moving pink squares), exploding gates, and multiple game modes. "Geoms" are dropped by killed enemies that increase your multiplier. Your multiplier does not reset when you die. You only have one weapon pattern. Local multiplayer is also available.
Why it's Fun
It's simple to play, but challenging to master. The quick action gives you an adrenaline rush when there are many enemies onscreen at once. When you lose all your lives, you can almost instantly start a new game, making "just one more game" a mantra to repeat over the course of a few hours. When you get a high score in a mode, someone on your friends list with the next highest score is always displayed in the upper-right hand corner, giving you a goal to reach.
Game Modes
Deadline: Get the highest score in three (3) minutes. Tip: Get as many "geoms" as possible during the entire game.
King: You can only shoot within protected pockets that disappear after a few seconds. Tip: Shoot lines directly to your next pocket before dashing toward it.
Evolved: Kill everything you can for as long as you can. Gets progressively harder. Most similar to the prequel, but with new enemies. Tip: Collect as many "geoms" as possible, but after a while, just focus on surviving.
Pacifism: You can't shoot. Run through gates to kill everything. Tip: If it's risky, skip the gate you planned on crossing and go through another (safer) one. Also, the gates are more explosive on the sides than the front/back.
Waves: Pictured above, involves surviving as many "waves" of the horizontally/vertically flying rockets as possible. Tip: Shoot straight at a line of enemies and just move your ship to systematically take out a whole row.
Sequence: Twenty levels of statically spawning enemies, which you must kill within the time limit. Tip: Memorize the pattern of the levels!

Thanks for the quick rundown
Thanks for the quick rundown of the game, Mintz. I may check it out.

I played this tonight and really like it. The new modes are pretty neat. I also think they made some tweaks to improve gameplay. For instance, when you're assaulted from each corner by a long string of the same shape (usually blue rhombi?) the string is more manageable now. I also like the new multiplier scoring. In the original, staying alive for a huge multiplier made getting high scores a function of doing it just right just once. I think this system gives all players a better chance to make a new high score, including the good players.

Yeah, it's all about collecting the geoms, as opposed to staying alive. I like that, because you're not doubly punished for dieing by losing your life AND your multiplier.

I don't like the new feel of the weapons, they seem so... lack luster in comparison to Geometry Wars: Evolved, Idk.
I love it though, I purchased it without a second thought.

There's actually only one weapon. It's pretty well-rounded.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like someone threw up every color known to mankind on that screenshot. I now have Epilepsy just from looking at it.
Try playing it.

I agree with Mintz.
When GW1 first came out, it didn't look that fun. It looked like a simple game with boring gameplay.
It turned out to be an addicting game.

I was a little confused at first too, but in the first game the weapon you have really doesn't matter once you get around 500k pts, so reducing it to one weapon that's well-rounded makes sense to me.

I think the dev nailed the achievements this time. GW1 achievements were too difficult, IMO. These are very challenging, but doable--and the game displays your progress towards the achievement in each game mode. I'm still working on Smile.

Hey Jeff, how is it seeing my name above yours on the scoreboards? :)
That's actually one of my favorite features of the new Geometry Wars. I typically don't care about my scores vs friend's scores, but constantly seeing them in the upper-right hand corner gives you a goal to shoot for.

Can't remember. I've been playing a lot of sequence, and I'm spanking you there by 10%.
