The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.
I visited the new Monte Sano course this Sunday to help out clear fairways for the new course. We had about ~15 people working on the course for around 3 hours. We managed to finish one complete hole #6, which is a sweet big hyzer shot up a steep incline over a little small water way (No water going right now, but you can tell a small stream runs thru). All it needs is some bigger tree's cut down that we couldn't get with our chain saw and its finished.
We cleared out 2 other fairways, both looking to be neat holes. This course is a mixture of Mastin Lake and UAH. There are some wide open holes on the back 9 that are just beautiful. Those holes are ready to play, all you need is a teepad and basket. They look like holes from a professional pdga course.
One downside I noticed from this course, it's going to be challenging. Unless they throw in some more beginner friendly holes, easy 2s, I don't think they will pull in the type of crowd they are hoping. I for one love the look of the course!
With people coming out to help and give inputs is fixing this issue. I was shown the original layout for hole #6, before we changed it.... You would have been lucky to get 8 strokes on it (It's still a tough hole but man it looks awesome). It used to be a huge ~350 uphill hyzer thru the woods followed by a long 300-400 straight shot that makes the long hole at Redstone look like a sissy. I would say it's about ~360 big hyzer hole, has two possible lanes off the teebox (well has three but I suggested without a mando sign on the first tree, you could just tomahawk straight to the basket defeating all the work we just did). You will need a great hyzer drive for the easy upshot, or a decent drive with a great upshot to get par.
The other thing I noticed about this course, it's very very long. The distance of walking is going to be more than UAH. The holes are very spread out.
Lastly, you will most likely lose plastic playing here, it makes ML look like a freshly cut field. The leaves are dense as I can get at, playing alone here might not be the best of ideas.
If they had baskets and teepads ready, I would say about 11 holes are ready for play with no further work needed. Very beautiful course indeed and I am looking forward to playing.
If we have a decent size work force come out every week, this course could be ready in a 1-2 months if they get enough funds to get the baskets by then. They have about 5-6 holes that need major work like we did on #6, and a few with minor clearing.
I will be going out again to help, it was neat to actually shape up a dg course. #6 looked like hell when we I arrived and looked like a playable hole when I left. Plus, it's great that you can do what you want, you think that tree limb is going to cause some future trouble.. cut that #@#$*& down!! yeah girl!

Keep us informed on when you'll be working on it. I wouldn't mind helping. If it's more dense than ML, I don't know what to say...that's dense.

It's scenic? I wasn't expecting that. I guess I don't know Monte Sano that well.
Baskets are $400. Kind of steep for our group to get one. I'm sure our group will be able to sponsor a sign or two, though.
I'll be up there to help soon. Also going to be helping out at Indian Creek a lot when the CoH gets moving.

I'll be glad to chip in on a sign or basket. Let me know.

"Don't blow this, Gene!"
From what I heard, IC hasn't
From what I heard, IC hasn't been worked on in a long time and is no where close to being finished. They believe MS will be finished before IC.
After what I saw a group of 7 guys with machetes, chainsaws, and shears clear out a very dense wooded area of weeds, vines, thorns, small & large trees plus branches into a perfect hole in an hour was awesome. I wish I had my cellphone to take a before and after but I left it in the car.
I think they are working on the course every Sunday starting at 1:00 and random days they can get out during the week. I will go back probably the Sunday after this weeks. My hands need to heal up a little, do remember to bring gloves if you come out in the future.
I don't know if I am going to contribute to the course, I feel like volunteering time is a good start. $400 to sponsor a full hole, including the basket is steep. Now if I could get a tax write-off for that, I may consider it.
BTW if anyone is looking to upgrade to a bigger DG bag, I'm selling my Competition Bag with quad straps. The bag is in perfect condition. They sell $55 brand new, the quad straps go for $40 brand new. I was thinking around $65-70 for both, may consider selling separate. I love the bag, but I just got a bigger and better bag at a steal. I wanted to give you guys first crack before I post on the Huntsville forum and disc golf forum, followed by ebay shortly after. I'm getting rid of disc I never throw as well.
I'll be able to help out on
I'll be able to help out on a Sunday in a couple weeks, after I get all of our stuff moved into the new house. I might see if I can get a small army of guys to come help as well. Apparently, the fraternity I joined has quite a few DGers. They're big on community service as well, so I think this will be a natural fit. I'll talk to somebody.

The target date set for
The target date set for ordering baskets is the end of August. Hopefully this course will be open in September. Huntsville is awesome, we have it lucky with 4 (soon to be 6) courses within city limits. Some people only get one course to play within 100 mile radius, sucks for them! ;)
We've got to thank the CoH
We've got to thank the CoH for donating the park space. Now, if we could just find some space in South HSV...
I can't wait for this course
I can't wait for this course to be open. I bet it really is scenic. I love Monte Sano mtn. The next house I buy might be up there. When Sarah is done w/ nursing school, we'll see!
I'm planning on helping out next Sunday. I'd like to help out monetarily as well, but all of my extra money is going towards the wife's nursing school for the next few years!
Where on Sunday do the guys
Where on Sunday do the guys meet up to start working on stuff?
