Impromptu PC LAN this weekend

Submitted by D15AV0W3D on Wed, 07/09/2008 - 11:28am.

Thinking of having an impromptu H1 PC LAN this weekend at my place. With short notice, I expect it'll probably be 2v2. Any more would just make it that much more fun, but no more than 4v4 for this one, although if we can get 8+, I wouldn't be closed to rotating out every few games.

I have 2 PCs that can run it. I have all the software/hardware for several people to load the game and play w/ S-Controller or 360 controller. If more than 4 people show, then we will run out of joysticks, and someone will have to use keyboard/mouse (I'm thinking EA will, anyway, if he's able to come).

This is mostly for fun, but also admittedly experimental. I just got the image to work last night, so I'm kind of stoked about that. But I'd also like to get in some H1 multiplayer action.

I'm thinking Sat. afternoon/evening. I'm pretty flexible on the time. If we don't get a core group of at least 3 plus myself, then we'll do it some other time. Just let me know if you can make it.

Equipment to bring:

Controller: 360 WIRED controllers are best. I have the software to make it work w/ a PC. Otherwise, I have a few S-Controller USB converter cables that will make those work w/ a PC, and the S-Controller to go with them, so don't worry about bringing one. I also have one wireless receiver for 360 wireless controller. If you have one of those, bring it, along w/ your wireless controller. A mouse/keyboard will work, as well.

PC: any mid-level gaming PC will do. You guys know as well as I do what would be sufficient.

Monitor: Again, pretty self-explanatory. But those of you w/ 22" LCDs, I can tell you, the game looks pretty nice on mine!

Networking: No need to bring any, I've got all the network gear we need.

Equipment I can provide: I've got enough for probably 5 players total to use a controller (either 360 wired/wireless, and S-controllers). Don't quote me on that, but if a few people bring a wired 360 controller and/or wireless receiver for PC, we'll be all set. I've also got a 2nd PC/monitor that will run the game. So if someone wants to come and use it, you're more than welcome.

Why not just play Halo 1 Xbox? As I think you might be disappointed with Halo PC and its lag even on lan.

I'm all for PC LANs. And

I'm all for PC LANs. And I'm down with Halo PC.

I'd like to see more than 4 people at the LAN. If there's not more than 4, then I guess jay's right. Why not play H1 on the XBOX...especially if people are going to be playing with controllers.

But, KB/M is where it is at...each person with their own screen at insane resolutions and framerates...and headphones.

And, it would be cool just to test out the LAN experience. So, I'm down with whatever happens (Erin's OOT this weekend).

Gah...as much as THX likes CoD4, we could LAN CoD4 without the problems found on the 360; mainly...you can't LAN CoD4 on the 360. And the console users could use controllers if they wanted. Custom games, maps, etc. Lagless CoD4 on LAN would rock!

I think modern laptops will play Halo PC just fine. In the summer of 2004, it was running fine on Centrino laptops back then. This 4 years later.

I'm guessing there are several people with computers capable of playing the game. I can count 9 computers that will be able to play it off the top of my head.

So, count me in. I plan on bringing 1 BYOC.

I would totally come, but I

I would totally come, but I have to help paint the new house this weekend. If you do this again, I'll be there.

I would like to commit, but

I would like to commit, but I might have to do wedding planning on Saturday. I have one good laptop and desktop that could run Halo PC. On the side note, the laptop is currently running Vista, I have no idea if Halo would run on it. I know its finicky when it comes to older games, hell even newer games pff. But I like vista for certain things and I'm going to build a new gaming desktop in a few months.

I would love to COD4, I have yet to play it on anything! Nor have I fired up Halo 3... if you want to lan some CounterStrike, DOD, TF1 or 2 best days of my youth gaming days right there. CS is still the best online fps imo, not the source version so noobified like halo 2. It just shows you can't improve on greatness.

I'd like to see more than 4

I'd like to see more than 4 people, as well. If we can get 8, that'd be great. My brother will probably come. I can also see if my brother in law is interested. I'm open to CoD4 for part of the time, if we get burnt out on Halo. If anyone has it for the PC, then bring it along.

On that note, I know a guy who might be able to come. He lives in Scottsboro, but he loves PC LANs. He has a copy of CoD4 PC, along w/ the files needed to make everyone a level 50, i.e., all weapons are unlocked. But he'd also be up for H1, I'm sure, so I'll see if he can attend.

There's a pretty large PC

There's a pretty large PC gaming community in Huntsville - larger than any organized console playing group. UAH has one. And the Dead Worker's have a group called Control Point, which is perhaps the largest TF2 community on the web.

I bet we could tap into HSV's PC gaming community and get some numbers at a LAN.

Would be cool to play 16 v 16 TF2 or Battlefield.

I haven't plugged into Control Point's stuff, but I wonder if they host any local LANs.

It's hard to get the Old

It's hard to get the Old Schoolers together nowadays. Jobs. Spouse. Kiddos. Mortgage.

I liked the idea.

I've long said that it's not about Console vs. PC. It's about input devices. And if it's about input devices, then console players can play on the PC just fine because most all PC games support 3rd party controllers (i.e., the XBOX 360 controller). And they'd get the added advantages of PC gaming.

BTW: I played some Halo PC last night. If I wasn't kicked out of a server, I emptied it by making everyone quit out.

I'm up for some H3 this weekend. Maybe some TF2 or Halo PC.

Anyone know anything about

Anyone know anything about SLI performance? I was thinking about doing two GeForce 8800GTS (G92) in SLI, but I'm wondering if I'm better off just getting the newer GTX series which would probably only cost about 20-30 more than buying two 8800GTS's.

And other than that, I'm stuck on going with the core 2 quad vs core 2 duo.. just can't make my mind up, say OCing the core 2 duo at 3.8-4.0GHz easy vs the quad at 3.0GHz, saving $30 bucks isn't much of an issue but I can't see the quads being that much better at this point in time. By the time they are used in multi-thread gaming, they will have better chips and the Q6600 would be worthless. Guess I will do some more research today during my free time.

Mintz's picture

I would get the two 8800GTS,

I would get the two 8800GTS, because you'll have the equivalent of the new GTX (for less money), and if you ever upgrade, you'll be able to SLI the new card + one of the GTS for even more performance.

Nobody's picture

Do you have to have 2 of the

Do you have to have 2 of the same cards in order to SLI them?

I'm pretty sure the NVidia

I'm pretty sure the NVidia GPUs much match, but NVIDIA GPUs sold by different manufacturers can be used together in an SLI configuration, so say GeForce xxxx from vendor ABC can be matched with a GeForce xxxx from vendor XYZ.

D15AV0W3D's picture

I think you are correct.

I think you are correct. SLI will work w/ different brand, as long as it's the same model.

From what I understand, you want both your PCI-E x16 slots to be able to run all 16 lanes in SLI mode. In lower end boards, the second slot will only run 8 lanes in SLI. So, you'd need a high-end mobo to get the most out of SLI. A single-card solution would widen your choice of mobos, and likely lessen the cost, as well, considering the high-end choices are likely to cost at least $30 more, negating the price difference of the GTX.

rapture's picture

I've got an XFX 8800 GTX

I've got an XFX 8800 GTX with 768MB RAM. I haven't found a game that gets less than 60 fps at 1600 x 1050 and full settings. I don't think I'll ever run SLI.

I'm leaning toward getting one solid card that will work well all the time versus getting an SLI setup. SLI generates more heat, takes up more space, and draws more power.

The 8800GTS is a solid card by itself. You'd probably be just fine rocking one of it for a while.

Mintz's picture

So you can't mix/match

So you can't mix/match different NVidia GPUs for SLI? That's pretty lame.

Everything has been ordered

Everything has been ordered minus the cpu, still debating on quad ~3.0GHz vs duo ~4.0GHz, or even at stock speeds. It's only a $28 dollar difference so the price isn't an issue.

rapture's picture

You need to have the same

You need to have the same kind of GPU, but you can have different cards from different manufactures with different speeds, RAM, bus, etc. The faster card will function at the speed of the slower card in SLI config.

@Celery: I'd go with the faster processor, regardless of how many cores it has. A lot of games aren't written for more than 2 cores. But, if you are going to be doing some other processor intensive computer (like making graphics, rendering video, etc.) then you'll definitely see the advantage of the multiple cores.

All that said, if the Quad core is just a few bucks more and the same speed, then I'd rock the Quad as a little future-proof insurance.

I went with the Core 2 Duo,

I went with the Core 2 Duo, quads are not used to the fullest yet for gaming, and by that time, the Q6600 will be weak, plus I would have to OC that to the fullest to match the Core 2 Duo but still wouldn't be as good. Yeah I didn't plan on doing any editing of any kind or graphics minus the occasional photoshop. I figured with my rig now, should last the next 2-3 years for what games I will want to play and by then the quad-gaming should be in full swing and I will upgrade then.

Now the first half of my plan is finished, time to start house shopping again so I can have high speed internet and let the massive online pc gaming begin baby.

Only downside, is I ordered parts from random places, most from new egg.. so I wouldn't doubt to have my new egg parts in tomorrow and the rest sometime around mid next week :(

I'm off work starting tomorrow (Thursday) and don't go back to work until after Labor Day. If anyone wants to LAN anything (H1, H3, TF2, etc.), PC or Xbox, let me know. We can always get 4-8 of us together, hang out, and game.
