Just getting a head-start on

Just getting a head-start on next week.

I'm 100% playing Saturday

I'm 100% playing Saturday morning around 8:00-8:30. Then the usual after work games with EA on random days and Doubles on Thursday at 5:30.

rapture's picture

I'll be playing next week in

I'll be playing next week in the afternoons. Unsure when and where and probably won't decide until the day of. Would like to get UAH twice next week.

I am planning on doing doubles at Braham on Thurs.

Mintz's picture

Alright, I updated it. We

Alright, I updated it. We should get like a Google Calendar applet and have a page dedicated to DG, kinda like this: http://www.huntsvilleultimate.com/wp/?page_id=17
That'd be sweet, then we could individually updated the calendar with who/where/when. Then I set it up to automatically remind me via txt msg when DG goes down, so even if you edit the calendar and I'm not near a computer, I'll know when you're playing.

I think I'll be able to join you for doubles on TH.

Mintz's picture

Eric, Skyler, (or any other THXer) if you want permissions , I can let you add/edit events on this same calendar.

I played this afternoon at

I played this afternoon at BS. I won't be playing Saturday morning, but I'll play one day next week at Redstone. Mondays and Wednesdays work best for me. Tue/Thur is out. If anyone wants to play Redstone Mon or Wed then I'm there. I can play at 4:15-4:30.

Mintz's picture

Midnight, I'll join you at

Midnight, I'll join you at Redstone Monday at 4:30.

Had a lot of fun playing DG with my Dad this evening. He's never played before, but he was making 30 ft. putts like they were nothing. His driving game is severely lacking, though. Next time a few of us meet up at Redstone, I'm gonna see if he could come along and you guys could show him how it's done.

Midnight's picture

Somebody other than me can

Somebody other than me can show him how it's done. Actually, I improved a lot today at BS. I tried keeping my shoulder loose. I was tightening it in order to throw the piss out of the disc, and this made for an almost unavoidable upward angle upon release. I'm now concentrating on keeping my shoulder loose, generating spin from my hips, and releasing on a level plane. I went +11 at BS today--my best yet.

Matt, are you sure you want to decide to do something a full 72 hours in advance? I'll see you at Redstone on Monday.

Mintz's picture

I dunno, depends on what I

I dunno, depends on what I feel like doing once I step into my car. I might make a rendezvous to the movies to see a certain someone, but I'll probably come. I dunno. It's complicated.

rapture's picture

I'll plan on being at

I'll plan on being at Redstone on Mon unless I get drawn to UAH for some reason.

If you've mowed a yard, just pretend you are cranking the hell out of the lawnmower and memorize how your arm moves. Then step 12" from a wall, do that same motion, but angle your arm so that you are pulling your wrist (aka the disc holder) from nipple to nipple. Turn your arm into a whip, not a catapult. Turn you wrist into a spring, not a henge.

Throwing a disc isn't about strength. It's about fluid technique. It's about the kinetics of a smooth throw.

I'll have to look for the chart, but I've seen a plot of arm-speed to distance and while there is some correlation, there are a lot of outliers that show technique is superior to power.

It'll take a year for distance to come because during the next few months you'll be honing your technique. And like Midnight alluded to, you've got to kill the robot and bring out the ballerina.

GG merging DG discussion

GG merging DG discussion into one thead. Will be good down the road.

THX claims another RCCG doubles match. I finished 1st with James (new Huntsvillian) as we played against 7 others in the steaming heat. We shot -3 at UAH. James is one of the best golfers that I've ever played with...maybe better than Deano from a couple years ago. He's an Open player with a crush drive. He nearly parked #6 at UAH. He deuced #7 by hitting a 170' Aviar so he's also got touch.

GG at Mastin today with Evan, Ryan, Josh, Andrew, James (above), and Skyler. Josh Mann and I took that doubles round by a shot or two.

I'll be at Redstone tomorrow at 4:30.

You may not be able to leave work that early. I will pick Celery up unless I hear differently from you or him.

Nah, I skipped lunch, so I can get off a little early to pick up Skyler. We'll have to make a pit stop at my house, though, so I can change and pick up my discs.

Skyler, it'd actually be even easier for me if you just stayed at UAH, because the disc golf course is right next to the building I work in. I can even pick you up at 4:00.

Skyler, I am going to try and meet you at UAH at 3:30. I have class at 5:30, so it doesn't make sense for me to try to play with y'all on Redstone, seeing as how I can't get on unless I carpool. So I'll just throw some around with you if that's okay.

Sorry if you showed up at

Sorry if you showed up at UAH Andy, I had to run all the way home after work to pick up my shoes to play at Redstone.

As far as DG for the rest of the week, I doubt I will play again until Friday. Which sucks because I just got invited to play a big bag tag round today and going to miss doubles on Thursday. I'm thinking of playing in the tourney this weekend up in Florence. Cost is $28, you get 2 rounds of 18 on a new course - am player pack which consists of one disc and mini, and possibly the chance to win money/plastic.

I took you off the list for Thursday, Skyler. Sucks that you won't be able to make it. Hopefully me or Eric can keep up the 1st place THX streak.

GG Skyler's drive on #8 at Redstone. A laser beam off the pad that is bending right and is obviously going to miss the mando. And then Boom! The disc hits 3 or 4 trees to the right of the mando and bounces off at about a 45-degree angle to the middle of the fairway and in front of the mando. Kind of like the tree played his second shot for him.

I'm going to be selling some of my discs as soon as I write down their color and weight. So, if anyone needs some plastic, I should have some used for $5 each.

I just dropped by Foot Care plus between getting my oil changed and going to work today. My throw is just now getting to where I can start to tell the difference between different discs, so I bought a Wraith to try it out. The Beast has treated me pretty well over the past year or so, but it's time to branch out! BTW, the owner was a really nice guy, and very helpful in selecting a new disc to try out.

@ Rap, I may be interested in some of your plastic. Let me know when you get ready to sell some of them. I also still owe you $10 for the THX DG course signs. I haven't forgotten. ;)

Great guys. I'll make a checklist of my plastic. Basically, I'm consolidating my discs and getting rid of the ones that I'm not using for discs that I will use. Some of this discs have been thrown less than 20 times. Some have been thrown 100 times.

I heard that Indian Creek is going to be the longest course in Alabama. The new UAH course has no doubt made me a better player, but I've noticed that it doesn't get played as often as the previous UAH course by beginners. I straight up know that the people that I was playing with at the old UAH course don't want to play at the new UAH course. I don't think I played UAH once last year.

I'm thinking that Indian Creek will also deter beginners from enjoying the game. Here's hoping that we get a Rec course soon that's fun for beginners.

Too far out to commit to playing this weekend. I definitely would like to find time to play.

I'm just going to stay in

I'm just going to stay in town Saturday. I will start at UAH at 8:30 then hit up Mastin Lake afterwards stopping at Burger King on the way for a quick free meal that I won off the Indian Jones Scratch off game. Should be finished before noon hopefully.

I'm assuming that Lavone is

I'm assuming that Lavone is going to make IC a major tournament style course with a lot of OBs and tough holes, I'm thinking it will be long like UAH but not as many open field holes. Be ready for plenty of OB at IC, due to the decent size river that will be running right down the middle of the entire course, he has stated a good bit of the holes cross/run along side the water.

I think the MS course is going to be a more beginner friendly course than Indian Creek. Hopefully I will get a chance to check it out this weekend, suppose to be helping with some fairways either this weekend or next.

Lavone also told me about a more Rec style course up towards the Hampton Cove area, he said he should at least be approved to make a 9 hole course. We shall see...

Mintz's picture

OB? Is that Out of Bounds?

OB? Is that Out of Bounds? Seems like it, according to the context.

Where is the Indian Creek course being constructed?

Yes out of bounds. It is being constructed at Indian Creek Subdivision, or you might know it as the Greenway Running Trail, it's off Slaughter Road.

Midnight's picture

Mintz, don't you remember us reading the poles at UAH that say "OB Water" or "OB Sidewalk" to figure out what was OB?

I don't think I would want to play another 18 after UAH. I might start at Brahan and then meet you at Mastin.

Mintz's picture

Gotcha. Are they also

Gotcha. Are they also building a course near Hampton Cove?

rapture's picture

I've been talking to Lavone

I've been talking to Lavone about a course in Hampton Cove. Hays Preserve is going to be out of the question because it's protected from just about any kind of unnatural development. Too bad, because they've got plenty of land, it's scenic, and disc golf is generally eco-friendly.

I've found that the city has 100 acres at Cove Park which is just past the Hampton Cove Golf Course. There are baseball field there now taking up several acres. It's low and some of it is a marsh. There are parking lots and part of the land is right next to the beautiful golf course. The city could move some dirt and it'd be a nice open place to play. It would be a great way to reclaim land that the city owns but isn't using. I've laid out 18 holes there already: http://ericatkins.com/files/cove-park-sample.jpg

My drawing shows that you can have a long course on that space (most holes are long and in the open...not too difficult...just long). Since I drew the course and inspected the boundary lines, it appears that several of the holes on the left of the map are on RTJGT property. So, the actually course would probably sit directly south of the ballparks, not to the west of them.

But, I think the next course, after Monte Sano and Indian Creek will be down south on Bailey Cove...if I remember correctly from an old forum post I read. I don't think Lavone's been out to see Cove Park yet and I don't think he's talked to the city about this location. But, he does have the go ahead to find more spots to install courses.

Man. If we can get one installed at Cove Park, I'll be there every day to help build it. And then, I'll play it weekly. I hope it's beginner friendly, with alternate hole locations to make it more challenging for the competitive player.

If I'm available, I'll help out at Monte Sano.

Mintz's picture

When you're standing at a

When you're standing at a tee next to a pond, it's pretty obvious what "OB Water" means: don't throw the disc in the water. I just didn't consider it meaning "Out of Bounds". I figured it could mean "Oh Boy! Water!" or "Oh Brother... Water.". [/sarcasm]

@Mintz: Some club members

@Mintz: Some club members are building a course on Monte Sano right now. Lavone is building one at Indian Creek right now. There's no plans to build one in Hampton Cove however the city will help if they find the right piece of land. The same goes for other areas in Huntsville. I've heard that a recreational course is in the works for the McGuckin Park area down south on Bailey Cove. I'm guessing IC and MS will be finished in a few months and no other course will be installed this year.

@JDOGG: You should start

@JDOGG: You should start out with a Driver and putter and perhaps an approach disc.

I recommend you go see Lavone at Foot Care Plus which is at the corner of Bob Wallace and the Parkway on the North East side of that intersection. It's a shoe store but he's got a disc golf shop inside. He's a local pro and can give you advice on what discs to buy. He also has the best prices in town (besides club prices with the Rocket City Chain Gang). Call ahead to make sure he's there.

I recommend:
Driver: Sidewinder or Valkyrie at about 170g in Champion or Star plastic ($12-$15)
Putter: whatever feels good in your hand although DX Aviars are the most popular ($10)
Approach: Pro Roc or DX Roc or DX Cobra ($10-$12)

Golf discs are regulated by

Golf discs are regulated by density, shape, and maybe another factor or two.

You can buy discs in different weights (usually 175 grams is the max).

You can also buy them in different plastics:
Star - most durable and grip like a Pro plastic
Champion - slick but very durable
Pro - grippy and more durable than DX
DX - most grippy and cheap

I prefer Champion plastic on drivers but a lot of people rather have Star.

JDogg, I would highly

JDogg, I would highly recommend buying three of EA's used discs for $5 each to learn what you like/dislike about them before going with new discs. He's got a decent selection of drivers/mids/putters that would fit a beginner just fine. Borrowing 3 discs for a round would also be fairly beneficial. It's difficult to know what you want until you throw a few different discs.

I can see the calendar at work.

Looks like 8:30 at Brahan Spring is the consensus, with transition to Mastin Lake from there. I look forward to it.

JDOGG85's picture

I'm going to play today around 4:30. I'm leaning towards UAH, but might go to BS or Redstone if others are playing. My friend Daniel has never been to BS, so we might go there if he is in. Opinions?

I played one of my best rounds ever at UAH on Monday. Didn't keep score (this helps me relax and improve) but I par'd a few 350+ ft holes. At Mastin Lake on Saturday I watched you guys and had a revelation about how to keep my discs down. Now I'm keeping it down 70% of the time instead of 30%. It's made a big difference in my game.

I will most likely play doubles tomorrow, Saturday morning, and possibly Sunday doubles.

@Jeff, Yeah thats a good idea to never really worry about scores. Whenever I let a score get to me, I start to play really bad. Our bagtag round the other day was a perfect example. I was playing awesome up to #8 and I let a +3 get in my head and I finished the day with a +9.

I've mostly gone to counting

I've mostly gone to counting pars. With traditional score keeping I feel like I'm playing defense. I'm trying to keep the score from getting larger. Counting pars allows me to focus on achieving success one hole at a time, and each time I remember the score I remember success instead of my +3 screw-ups. I know this isn't they way for pros to do it, but until I reach a certain level I think this is the best way for me. I'm not opposed to keeping score, but I play better when I don't.

rapture's picture

When we first started

When we first started playing, we didn't play "everthing par 3". We played by the par written on the sign or made up our own system.

If there wasn't a sign then we said anything under 300' = par 3, anything 400' to 499' is par 4, anything 500' to 599' is par 5, etc...

You're frustrated with the score but you're counting #8 at Redstone as a par 3. That's not realistic for anyone but a few Open players. Obviously that's the extreme example, but the same goes for the rest of the long holes at UAH and Redstone. If you count other holes as par 4 and 5's I think you'll find the game more enjoyable.

I recommend counting your score by that system that I described if you're getting frustrated with your score. Yeah, you won't be able to relate your score to those that score "everything par 3", but right now you aren't doing it anyway and no one really cares about your score.

"Everything par 3" is really just to make sure golfers can have a point of reference for different courses in different basket locations. Obviously, not every course in Huntsville is a par 54.

I say scale the par to your game and play that way for a while.

Midnight's picture

That may be a better idea.

That may be a better idea. Christina has already adopted an informal "everything par 4" system for herself.

I climbed the highest I've

I climbed the highest I've had to climb to retrieve a disc yesterday. 5 of us looked for about 5 minutes for it and we couldn't find it (a white Star Destroyer) on the corner of #4 at UAH.

As Skyler was walking to the basket on #5 he looked at the tree with his lasik vision and saw it. He scoped just a speck of the disc from about 200' away. The disc was about 35' up in a cedar wedged between 4 branches. Fortunately, it wasn't a technical climb.

Previously my highest climb was to the top of the evergreens in the fairway of #6. Climbing those suck because of the leafy needles that fall off by the hundreds down and inside your clothing. And the limbs don't leave much room for maneuvering.

I'll be at doubles today.

Just the icing on the cake

Just the icing on the cake to a horrid day of DG for THX. I still feel the pain for Jeff, I would have been all over that Teebird-L that is in the creek bed. Maybe I will put on my knee high rubber boots and fish that beast out and trade you for that disc. I lost mine TL about a week ago and I miss it.

BTW, my dad played in a golf tournament the other day and won those ball retrieval poles that extend to 15-20 feet. That bad boy will be with me every trip to UAH and in the future Indian Creek. Score

Had fun throwing the ~425 bombs on #10.

I will be at UAH today

I will be at UAH today around 1:00 if anyone gets off work early. I should be playing Saturday as well. Should be around the same time as always but haven't picked a course yet.

Well, I finally lost my trusty Beast yesterday @ UAH, in the ditch on Hole #2. Skyler, you seem to be the Maestro when it comes to finding discs. Mintz's picture

Skyler really is the

Skyler really is the greatest disc-spotter. I was about to say goodbye to one of my discs at UAH one day, when he spotted just a sliver of it. I lost it two holes later, but I was still thankful!

I'm interested in playing Redstone around 5ish today if someone joins me.

Ouch, sorry to hear that

Ouch, sorry to hear that Josh. I will try to work my magic at UAH on Tuesday. What general area did it go in the swamp at?

Last week was a good week for disc spotting in my life. Not only did I find Jeff's coyote, but I found count em 4 Orcs! 3 CE, and one sexy pink dx. I also found a 149g Shark. All no names so they are sitting in the trunk, 2 of the CE orcs are basically brand new almost, and the dx one looks to be pretty new as well. 6 discs in one day

I also have a 15 foot extendo pole that will be handy to have when we hit up UAH.

Does anyone know if there is something preventing UAH from keeping that ditch free of head-high vegetation? If I knew it was kosher I would donate a few hours to cleaning it out. I don't think UAH would care about the ditch at #2. The RCCG and other disc golfers might though. You'd have to ask the RCCG leadership if it's OK to remove the vegetation. I bet they wouldn't mind you clearing out some of the underbrush on some of the holes at Redstone.

IMO, the vegetation in the creek at #9 and #10 is a lost cause. I think it would be next to impossible to clean it out without earth-moving tools.

@ Skyler, probly about

@ Skyler, probly about 50-60ft. back from the hole, near the middle of the ditch. As you're looking into it from the pad, it hit some of the tallest vegetation (trees?), and would seem to have fallen in the water. Jeff and I spent about 15min. looking for it, w/ no luck.

Sounds like the same place I

Sounds like the same place I found Jeff's coyote, it could have landed sideways like his disc and penetrated that monkey grass weed like substance and slide under all that crap. I was walking along and actually stepped on Jeff's disc, after spreading the grass apart, I found a little tunnel where his disc had slide down between all the grass. That's why no one found it the other day, we were just looking around/on top of that crap, not underneath it.

I see the point in asking

I see the point in asking them about it first, but I can't figure out why disc golfers would care that someone cleaned up that ditch.

rapture's picture

Everything in that ditch is

Everything in that ditch is part of the course. Removing enough vegetation so that it's easier to find discs will probably mean you're removing a huge chunk of the obstacles. The hazard goes being being a wet ditch with vertical obstacles (in the form of vegetation) to a gully with very little hazard. It would cause players to play #2 more aggressively and the # of bogeys made on that hole would go down.

The duck pond claimed 2 discs...one at #13 and one at #17.

Yes, I reclaimed the trusty Beast. Funny, Jeff and I scoured the ditch for nearly 20 minutes w/ no luck, and I found it two days later in about 20 seconds. I took Skyler's advice and looked under the monkey grass. Then I threw an old DX T-Bird into the pond on #17.

Good thing I have my swimming trunks and scuba tank handy...

Well, not really, but I'm very tempted to grab swimming trunks and goggles to retrieve some discs from that pond. Problem is, I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't risk throwing their discs in the water without writing their name/number on them. I guess I'll find out, though, huh? :)

One guy recovered about 80

One guy recovered about 80 discs when he spent some time in the water getting discs. He found a lot that didn't have names on them. He returned many of them that did have names on them (I got 2 or 3 from him). A lot of them he kept because no one claimed them. There's got to be over 100 discs in there.

Hopefully this one won't ever be in there:

A 172g CFR Destroyer I just bought on eBay. Yeah girl!

I know for fact there is at least 10+ just from our group the past 2 months. If you go driving, find my white dx valk that is basically sitting on the fountain out in the middle :)

I also know there are some

I also know there are some nice disc out there, talked to this one guy that put a USDGA CE Roc out in that pond, 30-40 dollar disc. You wont see my sweet babies by that pond thats for sure.

@ Mintz, I've thought about

@ Mintz, I've thought about getting my snorkel gear and going diving for discs. But the thought of what's in that pond has been enough to deter me thus far. Don't know that I'll ever be brave/dumb enough to submerse myself in that filth.

Tons of duck poo and

Tons of duck poo and leaches. I saw FoulBreed (I think it was Foulbreed) go in twice in one week two years ago. Each time he came out, he had a leach on him.

Maybe there's more than 100 discs in there if our group alone lost 10 in a few weeks. I've probably got 8 in there.

The guy that used to go in, Craig, got permission from UAH to dive in there.

Some student needs to make an unmanned boat with a camera, lights, thrusters, and arms to recover all these discs.

Mintz's picture

Damn, I had plans to go in

Damn, I had plans to go in tomorrow, but not by myself, and not with leeches. I also don't have permission :/ (not that it would stop me).

EA, if you're willing to buy me enough Legos, I'll build you anything you want.

Yeah, I would go in only

Yeah, I would go in only with a full body wetsuit on, well okay I would go in with the just the correct equipment. I've been attacked by the leeches as has Foulbreed. Too be honest, I have no idea how you could see down there unless the pond was calm for a few days, but with that fountain running all the time I doubt that will ever happen. You can't see below the surface 10feet away, plus I don't want to think about how you have to dig disc out of all those weeds on the bottom of the surface. Nasty.

But man, think of all those discs! All that sweet smelly plastic.

Meeting Sklyer at Zaxby's on

Meeting Sklyer at Zaxby's on Univ and Parkway at 12:05 today. Then going to Off Campus to look at some discs.

Then going to Redstone and maybe Brahan afterwards.

Saturday morning there is a casual tournament at Brahan. It costs $5 and you'll be put in divisions (everyone on this forum would be Recreational). Money goes toward the US Women's Disc Golf Championships event here in HSV later this year. It's singles and should be a lot of fun. Tee off at 10 am. Signups at 9:30 am.

I'm unsure if I'm playing at all on Saturday. But if I do, I'll probably play the tournament at Brahan and encourage everyone to do so, regardless of how new you are to the game.

GG, Jeff.

Well, my brother in law hasn't called like he said he would do if he was going to play tomorrow, so I will probably hit up the tourney @ Brahan. Got some new discs today, namely a Wildfire putter, and am looking forward to tossing them. I may follow up Brahan w/ Redstone, depending on time of day, weather, and whether or not I decide to hit up the air show that afternoon.

Sounds good, Josh. We wouldn't mind participating in a doubles Pro/Am tournament, but we don't wish to do a singles tournament at this point. Best of luck to everyone competing.

Christina and I will be playing Redstone instead of the tourney. We will be in the small parking lot next to the Drake Ave gate at 8:15 AM for anyone that needs a ride onto the arsenal. At 8:20 we'll be proceeding to the course. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us if you choose.
