Disc Golf (5/15) & (5/17)

Submitted by Celery on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 1:52pm.

I'm going to throw at UAH after work on tomorrow (5/15) around 4:00-4:30 if anyone wants to join.

I'm also going to throw a couple rounds between 9:00-12:00 on Saturday if anyone would like to join. I'm not sure what course(s) yet, would like to hit up Redstone for a round if possible. If not I will probably go throw Mastin Lake for a round, then either UAH or BSprings. (More likely BSprings unless others want UAH, I need to work on my approach shots over super long bombs)

Times are subject to change.

I don't know if tomorrow

I don't know if tomorrow would work out for you. It's supposed to rain pretty bad (almost as bad as last Sat.) around that time. Just a heads-up.

Yeah, I just noticed that

Yeah, I just noticed that but I wasn't going to play due to getting my shoulder messed up last night at soccer.

Saturday is still on, I think my shoulder will be fine by then.

Saw a guy throw within 50'

Saw a guy throw within 50' of #8 and make the 50' birdie. He also nearly birdied #7 from about 280' (so did I, btw). He drove #10 and landed in the evergreen tree closest to #6 (about 25' from the basket). He was about 20' from the basket on #2. He was under the basket at #16. He was probably 50+ years old.

He made some of the best shots I've seen at UAH. He broke down a few times, else he would have been under par.

Midnight's picture

I'm looking forward to

I'm looking forward to playing more disc golf. I really enjoyed Saturday. I finished +31 on my first round ever (18 holes). Based on the last few holes I think I can do +20 next time.

Yeah, Jeff was improving

Yeah, Jeff was improving much during the end of the round. It shouldn't be too long when you will be shooting in the 10-20s. As for yesterday, that guy was not what I was expecting. He was very very good, minus the break down on "The Beast" when I thought he was going to murder someone. At least I out drove him on #5, which is about where my strength seem to have vanished. I guess I wasn't fully rested to play UAH yet :) GG Eric, one of the best rounds I've seen you play, pwning the dragon like that was epic.

What is this "breakdown?"

I'm assuming all kinds of

I'm assuming all kinds of swearing and foot-stomping.

He kept throwing into the

He kept throwing into the trees and couldn't get out, then after the third time and yells "WTF" like a serial killer with this look on his face, walking fast to retrieve his disc, this was a skinny old guy in his 40s I would say. It was quite funny, as I had to walk swiftly down the hill and turn the corner to smile and laugh at ACE who was doing the same.

As for DG, for anyone who

As for DG, for anyone who wants to come out.. we were talking about doing the same kind of deal this week for an early morning DG outing. We can go back to Redstone if you would like, or we could try out Mastin Lake(I personally like this course) or Braham Springs (I've only been once, tons of trees and pretty short distance wise). I would vote against going to UAH with new players fresh to the game.

BTW Jeff, yesterday some guys pulled up decked in nice Innova Bags (70 dollar ones, full of discs which can hold about 20-25 disc) They skipped hole one where Eric and myself were waiting for ACE to show up and teed off on #2. With heavy wind in their favor, they were driving about 100feet.. it was pathetic. Your first ever DG drive was further than any of the three. GG

Let's shoot for 8AM like

Let's shoot for 8AM like last time, we can decide where we want to play. I know Ryan said he could probably make it, as can Josh. Assuming EA can as well
If we can get an even number of players we can split it up nicely for doubles.

*Halo announcer voice*

*Halo announcer voice* Triple Post!

If anyone could loan me a couple discs and keep me away from UAH's water hazards, I'd love to join you guys.

Edit: Just remembered I have required graduation practice tomorrow morning in preparation for my real graduation tomorrow at 3:30!! I'm excited.

Midnight's picture

Christina and I are in. I

Christina and I are in. I wouldn't mind trying a new place. If you guys recommend staying away from UAH then I don't want to tempt fate.

Well it's just not a very

Well it's just not a very beginner friendly course, due to the long holes and many hazards. Very easy to lose multiple discs in a run, I've put 3 discs in the past 3 weeks into that damn pond.

I may give DG another shot

I may give DG another shot if James and Will are going. I told Ryan yesterday that I would grudgingly give it another try. :)

I just bought a Destroyer.

I just bought a Destroyer. I didn't know what it was until the skinny serial killer dude threw it on, like, every hole. I checked Innova's website and it appears to be Starfire, but two speeds faster. Starfire is my favorite disk. I got 169g because that was the heaviest Lavone had.

I may be able to play Saturday morning. SMS me Celery when you've got the plans.

Mintz's picture

I remember that day I played

I remember that day I played three holes with you guys at UAH until my one and only disc flew straight into a crapload of trees. I just said, "Well, it's been fun guys, see ya!"

Assuming I don't sleep in

Assuming I don't sleep in too late, like last Sat. I'll J/up fo'sho.

BTW, Mintz: thanks for the

BTW, Mintz: thanks for the disc.

Yeah I threw Ryan's Star

Yeah I threw Ryan's Star Destroyer, it went about as far as my other discs. Those destroyers need major snap to level out, they tend to want to stay left and go left. I threw mine pretty level, but Ryan's would never level out for some reason, I couldn't quite figure it out.

I have a Star Xcalibur coming in the mail, hopefully it will be here by tomorrow but I doubt it. Highest rated speed disc out right now, we shall see how she performs, but yeah I was tempted to buy a destroyer after that guys showing with it.

As of right now, I plan on playing as soon as I get up. I'm going to eat some breakfest then I'm heading to Braham Springs for a round. This will probably start around 7:00, since I can't manage to sleep past 6:00 anymore! People can either show up at BS around 8:00 like planned and we can go from there. If we have too many to get on base for Redstone, we can play BS or Mastin or UAH. I do not care, I can't wait for Indian Creek to open up, looks to be a good change (Hopefully old UAH caliber)

Thinking about playing a few holes around 1:10 today at UAH, just to throw some discs and practice some new things if anyone is getting off early today or wants to join.

Midnight's picture

Are you saying you plan to

Are you saying you plan to start playing at 7:00 or 8:00? If 8:00, then Christina and I will be there. I do not have a problem sleeping past 6:00.

Where do you guys recommend for buying discs locally?

We need to make our THX disc

We need to make our THX disc golf group. We should get some sweet dry fit shirts with our logo, like THX with a disc slamming into it with a chunk of the X falling off or a basic THX (Disc Basket Here) () <--- Disc Coming at Basket

Team Names:
THX Chain Bangers
THX Chain Shredders
THX Bomb Squad
THX Plasma Discs
THX Chain Stickies
Overshield Throwers
(Suggestions and maybe poll for the favorite if people want to do this)

I figure in a few more months, I'm going to start attending local tournaments & weekly play. I think this would be a great expansion of the THX group since a good bit of us play now and are improving a lot.

I wonder how much it would cost if we got a Bulk Set of Custom Stamped Disc for everyone, might look into that later.

Midnight's picture

I may need to play a second

I may need to play a second time before getting a t-shirt. Cool idea, though.

As Andy proved with our Insinuating Chaos t-shirts, making custom t-shirts is as easy as an iron-on sticker. He made the logo on his PC and prints it on iron-on sticker sheets. You can choose your personal color and style of t-shirt. Everyone is responsible for buying his/her own t-shirt, so there's no massive money collection involved. The only real centralized cost is the sticker material. I think it's a great/cheap way to do t-shirts that prevents one person from bearing a huge leadership or monetary burden.

I will be at Braham Springs

I will be at Braham Springs to play alone at 7:00, most likely I will be there between 7:00 and 8:00 just warming up playing a few holes. We will officially start at 8:00AM. I was thinking we would hit Redstone again, Braham Springs is right by the Walmart we normally met at, which is why I was going to throw warmups at BS.

I recommend Lavone's store off Parkway. http://www.footcareplus.net/biography.php is his store, he has a small room in the back full of everything disc golf at the best prices in town.

Greek's ETC and Off Campus Bookstore are the other two stores that sell.

Hmm as I was trying to find

Hmm as I was trying to find Lavone's store, I went to the PDGA site under his profile. It says his favorite hole is #2 at Indian Creek, could this mean the course is playable now??? I thought it was a few months off, maybe I'll swing by today and see.

I'd be down for some DG

I'd be down for some DG tomorrow. If we don't play the Arsenal again, then I'd like to go to Mastin Lake. Bit of a sketchy area, but a really nice course, IMO.

I've only been a handful of

I've only been a handful of times to Mastin Lake, but I love that course. It's almost even with my love for Redstone. A nice challenge plus the environment is nice from the full shade provided! Down side its easy to lose a disc, but they have improved the baskets, I think they are steal proof now from all the thieves trying to yoink them.

You don't want to go UAH or

You don't want to go UAH or Mastin tomorrow as those courses will be full of tournament players. You'll want to be at Redstone or Braham.

@Celery: Name for our group: The Hushed Basket?

I think THX'ers interested in DG should join up to the RCCG instead of us trying to make our own group. I'm all for a THX sub-group, but we really should show our support to RCCG. $25 for membership, tag, sticker, and mini.

I'm getting a RCCG membership as soon as I see the treasurer. Looking forward to the Bag Tag challenges. Would be cool if you guys had Bag Tags.

I've played in a few doubles matches with RCCG. It's a Pro-Am format and it's really good to see the Pro's play the game. I improve the most when I play with the Pro's. I'll join you Sky.

I'm def up for dry-fit THX logo'd shirts. Cafepress would have them, I guess.

I don't know of any baskets installed at Indian Creek. I know someone that lives next to the course and he says people have been throwing.

Custom Innova discs: you must buy at least 100 and it's about $9/Star and $8/CE. If you hold a PDGA sanctioned tourney then it's 50 discs minimum.

RCCG has some custom discs.

Best place to get discs is Lavone's store or the back of his truck.

Yeah I was planning on

Yeah I was planning on joining RCCG, without them we wouldn't have DG in Huntsville and they are doing everything possible to expand the game. I was thinking along the lines of a subgroup, nothing serious like the RCCG, just to represent our group as a whole wearing a custom dry-fit when we play causal or tournaments.

Yeah I didn't even think about The Hushed Basket, THB-X on the shirts?

rapture's picture

I just bought us one sign on all 4 courses. See here: http://hushedcasket.com/node/2892

Final update for

Final update for tomorrow:

Local Tournament going on this weekend:
UAH and Mastin Lake on Sat.
Redstone and BS on Sun.

I will be at Braham Springs course around 7:00-8:00. We are limited to either BS or Redstone, so if you guys want to play at Redstone and we have enough vehicles to get on base, we will play RS. If not we can just stay at BS and throw.

See everyone that wants to come out and throw, if you don't have any disc and would like to join I have plenty that you can borrow.

Christina and I bought discs

Christina and I bought discs today from Wolfe. We had some extra time between lunch and Matt's graduation so we went to Braham Spring and played the front 9 holes. We had an awesome time! We met Levon on hole #1, who noticed we had bought discs from his store. I watched him birdie hole #1. Amazing.

Our practice was very beneficial. I'm starting to get control of where I throw these things. I finished +9 for nine holes. I par'd two holes and two of the holes included botched 12-15ft putts. I hit the basket on two of my approaches. I also seem to have driven quite a ways on a few holes. On #9 my drive went into the parking lot and hit a jeep. I paced it off at 244ft. On #2 I estimated my drive at 250ft because the hole is 290 ft and I was just outside comfortable putting distance. I'm by no means playing "good," but compared to last weekend I'm performing miracles.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

Mintz's picture

I'm gonna swing by whenever I wake up. Considering I'm posting this at 1:45 AM, that might be around 9AM. Skyler, hopefully you won't mind me borrowing some of your discs!

BTW, if you've never been to

BTW, if you've never been to Braham Spring's DG course (I hadn't until yesterday), it's across Drake from the picnic area and lake. If you're heading away from the Parkway, turn right at the entrance (tennis courts) and you eventually come to a funky 3-way stop. Go as straight as you can, past horseshoe pits, and the course is on your left in a grove of evergreen trees.

Played at Brahan Spring

Played at Brahan Spring today with Christina after the Cotton Row Run. We met a guy named Craig from Athens and played the back nine with him. We got some much needed practice. I improved to a PR of +15 and Christina to +21. I drove about 3 feet past the basket on a 291 ft hole (#14?), which was a PR drive for me.

I'm probably going to start playing Redstone once a week after work. Both Christina and I really enjoy this.

Mintz's picture

I agree with you. Disc Golf

I agree with you. Disc Golf is fun in and of itself, and playing as a group of THXers makes it even more fun. It's nice how we had a pretty decent-sized group last time, yet you didn't have to wait too long before it was your turn to throw a disc.

rapture's picture

I had a good time at Brahan

I had a good time at Brahan on Saturday. It was the first time I had played it and it was easier that I thought it would be. I thought the trees would be a lot more dense. I look forward to playing it again...but it's hard to pass up Redstone and UAH.

I shot +3 at Redstone on Friday and that was with missing a 5' putt, going OB on #8, and hitting the tree on the corner on #6.

I'm going to try playing UAH tomorrow after work.

Looks like we got Jeff

Looks like we got Jeff addicted like the rest of us! GG

Has anyone played Ultimate Frisbee before? I played in Birmingham this weekend with a bunch of people, and it's a whole lot of fun, albeit a lot more physically exhausting.

Where can I buy three or four cheap discs?

@Mintz: I know a few people

@Mintz: I know a few people that play in an Ultimate Club here in Huntsville: http://www.huntsvilleultimate.com/wp/ I played for about half a season and used to go to play pick-up at UAH on Sundays. If you want a ultimate disc, you can get them from most any sporting goods store. If you want disc golf discs, go to Wolfe Disc Golf AKA Foot Care Plus on the corner of Bob Wallace and Parkway. If you are serious about getting disc golf discs, call the store and ask to meet with Lavone so that he can tell you what discs to get.

The serial killer tour up UAH this weekend. He's just a few shots from being "Pro".

Talked to a friend who lives at Indian Creek. There's no buildings installed yet. No pads, signage, baskets, etc. Lavone is waiting on the city to come clear some trees/brush and move some dirt.

I'm headed to UAH right now.

Mintz's picture

I just went to that website

I just went to that website at 6:45, and it said they had Pickup Ultimate today starting at 6:00 until dark, so I immediately headed to the Kiwanis Sports Plex, but the gates were locked :( I guess a little water is enough for the Sports Plex people to shut down. After coming back and hitting up the website, turns out they switched to UAH today. I'm gonna hit up the Ultimate players at UAH on Sunday though.

So rap, call the foot care place, ask them for Lavone, and head over there? Do they have a super-secret backroom full of discs or something?

Ultimate Frisbee is the shiznit! I used to play pick-up games in Auburn, back in the day when I lived down there. If you've only played it in P.E. during middle-school, you don't know what you're missing. Don't get me wrong, football is great, but Ultimate adds some dimensions and combines them in a unique way.

College campuses seem to have lots of UF pickup games.

After soccer games on the Arsenal, I always see people playing at the Kiwanis sports plex. I'd like to get in on those games sometime.

Also, there's a group of people that play UF at Grissom on Sunday afternoons at about 2PM. It's way more laid back. I haven't been in years. They have a group on Facebook.

Celery's a hater. They play Pick-Up Ultimate Tuesdays at 6pm at the Sports Plex and 2:30pm Sundays in front of UAH's Material Science building. I fully plan on attending this Sunday, and most likely Tuesday. Unfortunately, the forecast calls for rain, but we'll see. It'd be cool if you could make it, Josh, so I wouldn't be completely playing strangers.

You know, they can't actually call it "Ultimate Frisbee" because "Frisbee" is copyrighted or something.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a foot care business selling golf discs...

The owner of the foot care

The owner of the foot care business is a local disc golf pro that helped get DG started as a professional sport and the reason we have four courses in Huntsville with more to come soon.

And ultimate still sucks..

Slayer's picture

To me Ultimate is just

To me Ultimate is just football without the contact... and to me that defeats the purpose. I've played ultimate twice, once when I was in scouts and we weren't allowed to play football anymore because the kids in the troop were wusses and kept getting hurt and then whining about it. The other was in high school and I was invited to play up on Monte Sano. That was kinda fun, but it wasn't near as fun as football is.
------------------------
"Don't blow this, Gene!"

Mintz's picture

I think Ultimate is more

I think Ultimate is more like a Football/Soccer pseudomix. There are no "downs" like in football, but there is a "kickoff", and the disc is always in play, like soccer, until the disc is dropped, like football.

It's also fun, despite what the haters say.

Do not "EVER" compare

Do not "EVER" compare ultimate to soccer, it is not even worthy enough to be mentioned together in the same post.

Why not pick hockey? The puck is always in play. Wait nevermind, hockey is a hardcore contact sport. Cricket is out due to flat bats, enough said there. Polo, nope still too much.

Ultimate was created by a pansy that couldn't play rugby, the closest comparison. Take out the hardcore crazy brutes, the ball, full contact no padding, ability to throw and kick; then you integrate in no contact, stupid people jumping around trying to guard a thrower, big freaking frisbee, stupidly small field that any fast person can run by for easy scoring(at least when I played a while back).

On a side note, I would just beam the frisbee into the retard that stands in front of you flapping his arms around like he is trying to air swim :)

If you guys want to play football, let me know when and where. I never compared UF to football. I was simply stating my opinion of it.

And since Celery, correction, M1NTZ, brought up soccer (the REAL football), well, there's no comparison there at all. They are nothing alike, not in the way they're played, nor which one is better. Soccer is the greatest sport in the world, hands down.

I'm going to play Doubles

I'm going to play Doubles today at Brahan with the RCCG. Round starts at 5:30; people show up at 5PM.

You don't have to be a RCCG member to play.

You put $2 or $3 in a pot and the top 3 ( I think ) pairs get some chump change.

It's a Pro-Am format which means you'll be paired with a Pro/Advanced player.

There is also a ACE pot

There is also a ACE pot donation of a dollar I think, if you hit an ace you get the full pot. I couldn't find what the total is at right now, but I think it is low since 4 players got to split the pot at the tournament last week. I think it was well over $200 bucks.

I will also be at the doubles event this afternoon, and depending on how quick the event lasts I will play another 18 since the course is small.

It's 5 bucks to play: $1

It's 5 bucks to play: $1 goes to the ACE pot, $1 goes to the RCCG Club, $3 goes to the winnings of the event.

First time double players look to get a free entry, score!

I should be there around 4:30, going to throw a little to warm up.
