Up until last month I was pretty sure I was going to get the new 3G iPhone that hits the street later this year. That was until I found the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1: http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/?lc=en&cc=us
I think it blows any mobile computing phone out of the water. Unless it costs over $600 this fall, I'll be getting one.
The 800x480 LCD screen is killer. That's a very high resolution for a pocket device. It's also a touch screen so you'll be able to touch the screen to navigate.
The slider design will be great for QWERTY users. I don't like the iPhone's touch screen QWERTY. I don't like my Motorola Q's QWERTY pad (kind of small). I like the QWERTY pad on the new Blackberrys (a bit larger). I think the Xperia keypad is going to be better becaues it is going to be large - kind of like the Sidekick's keypad.
It has 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
a 3.2 MP camera.
runs Windows Mobile 6.0.
run custom "panels" UI on top of WM6.0 for iPhone-ish navigation.
MicroSD memory card support.
The 3G iPhone will probably be up to 16GB this fall. Right now, MicroSD cards only hold up to 8GB of stuff although cards double and triple that size have been announced. Still, I don't intend to use this phone as a media player. I can get 8GB cards for under $100.
Who knows. Maybe if I can get a 16GB card for cheap I'll consider turning this device into a mobile stored media tool.
But screw stored media. How about streaming media? I'm wondering how Slingbox video will work on this phone. Live widescreen DirecTV, Comcast, or Windows Media Center at 800x480 could be killer.

My next phone will
My next phone will definitely have a horizontal qwerty pad. Right now my top choice is the LG Env Voyager: http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/LG-Voyager-Preview-review-r_1863.html
or it's little brother, the Env 9900
http://www.phonedog.com/cell-phone-research/lg-env-vx-9900.aspx
My top requirements right now are that it can't run Windows of any sort.
Must have a decent battery life.
Horizontal Qwerty keypad.
Must be relatively cheap compared to an iPhone.
I might end up going with the 9900 because it's more of a phone/texting device than a full out palm pilot. Though the Voyager is so cool looking, I'm sceptical that it's going to be good on batteries and speed. I liked the Sidekicks for the simplicity of them. Custom OS, custom interface, fairly fast I heard. The Env seems like a clone of the sidekick.
Yours looks cool, I'm just afraid Windows will never be on a phone of mine again. I had too many problems with it before. Android maybe.

Hmm. I wonder if that's a good thing for Danger. Seems they had a pretty good thing going with the sidekick's UI which was one of the best mobile UI's in my opinion. That thing is just fun to use, too bad it's only for t-mobile (I think).
The 9900 doesn't have the sleekest interface, but if it's like any of LG's other mobile OSs it'll be low key and low resources. Kindof like the PalmOS used to be when they were first competing with Windows. Not sure how Palm runs now, but I'd bet it's more streamlined than Windows.
Before we had GPS phones I wrote a program that allowed you to hook up your GPS device and display all sorts of realtime GPS info through your Palm Pilot's larger screen. I didn't have a good mapping program or evdo, else I'd of been able to display the info over something like google maps (not even sure if it existed yet).
Can't wait until we start seeing Android phones. I'm curious to see how fast that runs.

Speculation is that MS bought Danger so that they can develop UI's for Windows Mobile phone much like SonyEricsson is making the Panels UI for the X1.

CNET thinks the Voyager owns
CNET thinks the Voyager owns the iPhone. My only gripe with the iPhone is that I hate things that are solely touchscreen (not to mention the jacked up price).
The perfect phone for me would be a Sidekick that runs on Verizon and that I'm not embarrassed to take out at work.

Mike, I have the LG 9900, and I love it.
2MP camera with 320x240 video recording
MicroSD slot
MP3/WMA playback (with decent speakers that made me ditch my headphones)
QWERTY keypad that isn't cramped
GPS with Turn-by-Turn Navigation (that I don't use b/c it costs $$$)
A solid web browser (which I also don't use... $$$)
AIM/MSN/Yahoo IM
Bluetooth
Long Battery life (I go two or three days without plugging it in, and I use it constantly)
Beastly Vibration
Verizon's coverage
That's all I ever wanted in a phone, and I got it with the EnV. It's so cool to have a screen on that outside with a number pad. It's a full-featured phone in itself, but then you open it up and it feels like a little computer.
If you haven't had a chance to get a hold of one, you work right down the street from me, so just get in touch.

The Xperia comes with two cameras. This means I'll be able to do video conferencing.
I was told that this phone is smaller than the iPhone but is a little thicker.
"There are two built-in cameras. The main camera is 3.2 megapixel AF and includes touch focus. A picture can be shared as a picture message or email with friends or family, or using any available transfer method, such as Bluetooth™. There is also a QCIF camera for video call located on the front."

@rapture holy cow that's awesome. I never thought of the videoconferencing. Seems like a sweet idea.
I do know the Voyager has it's camera set up where there's a screen and a camera facing in the same direction, but I don't know if they had the foresight to allow you to turn both on at the same time. That's something I definitely would upgrade to unlimited data to use.
Has anyone seen The website where you can stream video live from your phone? This is Kevin Rose showing off the inside of the Digg headquarters from his cell phone. BTW: He has a cubicle?!
Something interesting I found in Verizon that I had no idea about, you can subscribe to their TV service and get 8 channels I believe streamed to your phone, including Comedy Central and ESPN. very cool... though I'm not sure how much I'd use it.

@Oculus: I applied for the qik beta a while back and still haven't heard anything. Still waiting.
@DJ: No pricing plan yet. Rumor is that it's coming to AT&T since there is an AT&T logo on one of the panels. I just checked and I've got 3G at my house so I'm OK with switching providers.
@DJ: You know what you can port your cell phone numbers to another cell or landline provider, right?

On a side note, Sony became
On a side note, Sony became hard to beat in the cell phone market after they acquired Ericsson. LG and Samsung are good, as well. Motorola just seems a little behind the curve to me, esp. as far as durability and quality go. Cosmetically, they've obviously had a great run w/ a few models (i.e. the RAZR), but when I worked at Cingular several years ago, we had so many Motorola phones being brought back, and many DOAs. LG is the one that stood out the most on the opposite end of the spectrum. When we sold one of their phones, we rarely saw those get returned. They can take a beating and keep working. Sony Ericsson phones always seemed the most feature-rich and cutting edge, and very few DOAs. So based purely on a proven track-record, I'd take the Xperia over the iPhone any day.

I had a friend in CA with the streaming TV service. Was pretty cool. That's the type of thing you can do with CDMA and 3G, but not traditional GSM.

"One panel that the Sony Ericsson folks were particularly proud of looked like a blank desktop save for a few colored fish and a digital clock. Tap and hold the screen and the fish flock to your finger; tap repeatedly and the fish scatter. If your battery's getting low, one of the fish starts to turn red, while another fish turns yellow if you miss a call. Cool."

I sincerely doubt it will come to T-Mobile. It doesn't appeal to their primary consumer base (i.e. teenagers w/ Sidekicks).
