EVE Online: Frickin Huge, Frickin Difficult, But Kinda Frickin Cool.

Submitted by Oculus on Mon, 03/17/2008 - 2:15pm.

EVE Online

This MMOG is about Space, Spaceships, Politics, and Power. It's comprised of a massive single persistent PvP world that's hosted on a single 'supercomputer' managed by the game developer.

It's huge. Massively huge. Pop out the map interface and you zoom out from your current star system to a view of the entire galaxy.. thousands of stars, all with corresponding solar systems, planets, nebulas, asteroids, space stations.

Your in control of a spaceship that you can upgrade, sell, or trade in for another better class of spaceship. You gain in game currency through mining, trade, bounty hunting, pirating and/or certain odd jobs.

There's 4 races, all descended from Humans, and 4 federations that each control a segment of protected space. To travel in a solar system, warp drive is available, and to travel between star systems, you must use a stargate. The resulting star map resembles a massive internet-like network of connected star systems. Each star system has a security rating that varies from 0.0 to 1.0 based on your federation's strength in that system. 0.0 is like the wild wild west. It's persistent territory that anybody in the game can claim as their own. Venture there only if you've got the strength to sustain pirates and/or attacks from the corporations that have claimed that space previously.

I haven't spent a lot of time in the game so far, but I've spent enough to know that it's one of those where joining or forming a corporation (equivalent to a clan or guild) and claiming space through strength in numbers is more viable. It's really quite fun to explore the world, knowing that there's no room for errors. If you die, that's it, you start from square one, have to buy a new ship and rebuild. It's a more real-world approach to gaming considering the single universe that all players log into and the strictly PvP (Player Versus Player) environment.

In my first foray into 0.0 space, I was curious to see what would happen if I make a 40 stargate jump to the outside of the galaxy.. no escorts of course. Let's just say that about 20 jumps down the road, I make it to my first 0.0 security rated star system, only to come out the other end facing 3 warp disruptors and some pirates defending their claimed territory. Due to the disruptors I was unable to get away. I was a sitting duck. Next time I'll be ready.

I like EVE's approach to space travel. I find it easy to believe, easy to grasp, and cool to watch. Warp drive in particular.

Now that I've given a bit of a rundown, I'll also mention how difficult this game can be. There's a LOT to learn... a LOT. I've probably only scratched 0.5% of the surface of what you can do in the game, but a lot of the gameplay is aimed towards the concept of gaining power. Either economic power, political power, and military power. The gameplay is also aimed at a bit of a more mature gamer than the standard WoW player. It's complexity alone is enough to scare away the tweens, and is one reason why it's so interesting to me personally

I thought about forming a HushedCasket corporation. With enough people I think it'd be a fun game to try out. Let me know if you play. Until then I'm going to try and join another casual corporation, and see who I can blast away. If you like MMOGs definitely check out EVE Online. It's an amazing piece of art and engineering.

14 days of it are. After that, sorry, no. The sheer scale and complexity of it should be and indication. Upkeeping a supercomputer cluster that hosts 35,000 people at once needs some sort of funding coming from somewhere. It's through a monthly subscription much like WoW.

I meant the game itself. So the game itself is free, but has a monthly subscription. That's pretty nifty.

That's right.. The download

That's right.. The download is free. You don't have to buy the actual software, just the time to log on to the main server. You also don't have to buy updates to the software or "version packs" like some other MMORPG's charge for. Any new update or functionality or anything is included in the monthly subscription.

If you get zamazing, you can even use in game currency to pay for your next month, however that's one of those things where I'm so far from, I shouldn't even mention.

That game looks like a lot of fun. I'd like to invest some serious time in a community-driven PC game. You are right. A THX Corp would be a ton of fun. But, I don't think we've got enough PC users on the site.

BTW: I've been spending a lot of time on Steam - mostly playing TF2 (which is becoming one of my favorite PC shooters). I'm having fun Sniping, playing Medic, and Rocket jumping as a Soldier.

I'm thinking about buying the Quake pack on Steam. All 8 Quake games for $30. I think I've decided I'll do that after I've had my way with TF2. Really wish more of my normal gaming buddies were playing TF2...instead of WoW.

I just found out that

I just found out that there's a 21 day free trial (instead of 14) of EVE if you download it through Steam. Here's the link
http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=8500

Quake has been one of those that I keep going back to every few years. I love it because it brings back memories of the summer between high school and college where I played a lot of it. I love that game.. though it makes me want to yack (motion sickness) at times. Besides Quake I've been wanting to check out UTIII.

I'm going to check out TF2 soon. Graphics card is on the way to XFX to get RMA'd hopefully that will end up well.

Your right though, I'd only start a THX Corporation if we had enough people to make it worth our while, otherwise we may as well join a larger corporation with some actual resources. I'd say, with 10 people, you'd be close to starting your own. Until then I've found a couple of EVE corporations online with a "training period" that looks to be right up my alley. Low commitment, low pressure, just teaching some n00bs the ropes.

My time is precious, so I won't be going hardcore, just playing enough to get into the game and enjoy it. I'll probably end up buying a month and seeing how it turns out. If I like it, I'll continue... so far I'm liking it a bit. It's one of those games you couldn't possibly implement on a console.

EVE Online seems pretty cool, but it appears to be so freaking complex (in a good way) I'm afraid it would be a huge time-sink and just another title that will chew up days out of my free time. THX corp. sounds like a good idea.

It's an MMO-RPG with

It's an MMO-RPG with spaceships instead of people, and with 1 persistent universe on 1 logical server instead of hundreds of smaller dedicated servers like other MMORPGs. It's PvP, with minimal PvE (Player versus Environment) types of quests.. so you need to interact with other people and you'll end up getting tasks or battles to fight. Some corporations are established enough to provide you with ships for battle if you've got the skills.

I've done a bit of research on corporations and it led me to a couple conclusions:
Alliances are more important than the individual corporations. I kept reading about corporations that are against "BoB" and after a few web searches it lead me to this page. http://www.eve-online.com/alliances/ "BoB" is the Band of Brothers alliance, made up of 13 corporations and 2700 pilots, all with the goal of taking over the entire EVE Universe. Being a purely PvP and persistent environment, there's no rules against this. The video I posted above is from the Goonswarm alliance.. it's currently the largest, with 57 corporations and 5238 pilots, laying claim to something in the order of 120 star systems.

So yes, you can run around and look for stuff, or you can join a corporation and plug into an alliance and work towards a larger goal.

Eventually they plan on making the planets explorable, and will be able to leave your ship and walk around inside the space stations. As of now, I'm kindof glad you can't do that, as I'm still learning basics.

Interesting article from

Interesting article from Scientific American on how the economy of EVE Online is being used to study real economics:

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=virtual-world-economists-on-real-economies

rapture's picture

I don't think you can study

I don't think you can study virtual commodities as well as you can study society and social issues within an virtual world. Virtual commodities have as much backing in the virtual world as our US currency has in the real world (which is no backing at all). I think there's a lot to be learned about the human condition, though.

Politics of EVE Here is a

Politics of EVE

Here is a (Not so sure how current) map of the EVE universe. As you can see, Coalitions have formed out of treaties between multiple alliances, and you can see who and where the lines are drawn in the galaxy. Each alliance lays claim to these particular star systems.
http://www.eve-files.com/media/corp/CRII/Latest.jpg

The large red block (the Southern Coalition) was formed from multiple alliances out of a desire to bring an end to the Band of Brothers alliance at the time. Apparently, it looks like they were pretty successful. The Goonswarm Alliance (a member of the Southern Coalition) is now the largest, and was originally formed and is comprised out of frequenters of the SomethingAwful forums.

The space in the middle is "Empire Space" and is where you start out as a noob. You have automated police forces here that ensure a particular security grade for each starsystem that's under control of the Empire. You only get sovereign status if you own a star system I believe.

If your having a hard time keeping up, that's Corporation/Alliance/Coalition from smallest to largest...

My first attempt to get out to the edge of the galaxy probably led me up to somewhere in the grips of the Northern Coalition, where I was completely obliterated when I came out of the stargate..

hmm.. now to pick a Coalition.

I thought it was pretty

I thought it was pretty cool, since the EVE developers only provided the vehicle for these things.. People naturally will join forces and create Alliances and that's what has happened and you get the universe you see in the map.

In their quest for power, people realized they could create super alliances and dominate others.

All of the star systems are Created/Claimed/Defended by real people around the world. I picked the Gallente race, but I really think it doesn't matter what race you are. You can train all sorts of abilities on every race.

My current character is Mikeulus. Send me a friend invite or an EVE Message if your in game.

Mike, I'm having some trouble getting my account up and ready. I download/installed it through Steam, and I launch it. Nowhere in the game does it give me the option to make an account and get the 21 free days. I go to EVE's website to create an account, and the only way to get their 15-day free trial is by going to a GameStop and getting a scratch-off card with a registration number??

I don't even care if I miss out on Steam's extra 6 days, I just want to get going now. What am I missing, here?

i clicked the trial button

i clicked the trial button in the Steam store and it opened an internet window prompting me to make an account with eve. then i had the 21 days.
