Ok, so last night my power went off and on at the house. Well, after it went off I went to restart my computer and when it booted up it would show the windows xp logo, but then keep restarting over and over. Then it gives me the choice to boot up in safe modes or last working settings, but none of those will work either. I read on the microsoft troubleshooting pages about how to fix this problem, but can't seem to find the system32 file and kernel32.dll I am supposed to fix.
My question is this, how do i backup my data from the hard drive? I cannot log on windows and have some important stuff on my hdd that needs backed up. I am skeptical about re-installing windows on a different partition in fears of losing some data. What can I do? I have another working computer in the house that runs vista, but haven't found a simple way to do this. It's about time to reformat my computer anyways so if I can somehow get my hdd data backed up I will be good to go.

Would buying an external
Would buying an external hard drive enclosure and just transferring the data via usb be the easiest option at this point? There seems to be no formatting needed when you do the setup that way.
Do you by chance have your
Do you by chance have your O/S on one partition, and the data you need backed up on another? If that is the case, then you should be able to format the O/S partition, and reinstall WinXP w/out effecting the data on the other partition...
If you only have one partition, then the method you mentioned might be your only option. You could always just connect your hdd to another PC via IDE or SATA as a slave, back up the data, then put it back in your PC and format it. Then you wouldn't need an external enclosure.
Well, the external enclosure
Well, the external enclosure worked. I went and picked one up at the computer cable shop in the mall for $40. I put my internal in there and hooked it up to the other pc and everything copied off fine.
I tried to get the data off by hooking it up via SATA, but if you go that route then you have to format the hdd first.
So once again my pc is up and running and I am happy.
