XBOX 360's Open Tray error hits home. Another repair. What you can do.

XBOX 360 Open Tray

************
UPDATE - Basics

CHECK ONLINE TO SEE IF YOUR XBOX IS UNDER WARRANTY.

1) Go to support.xbox.com.
2) Click XBOX 360 and click 'Register a Console'.
3) Enter in the serial number of your console.
4) Microsoft will instantly tell you how much time you have left on your warranty.

About #4. One time when I experienced an Open Tray Error, I registered my console to find out that I had just 5 days left on my warranty.

5) If you are within warranty, you can instantly print out a pre-paid shipping label and ship your box back to Microsoft. This will cost you no money other than the cost of a box and packaging.

If you are out of warranty:

You may have to pay $99 to get your Xbox 360 repaired if it has the Open Tray error and if you bought the console more than 12 months ago. However, if your console gets the Red Ring of Death error, then your console will be repaired for free if you bought your console within the last 36 months. Microsoft will repair your Open Tray error for free if your console also has the Red Ring of Death error.

************

I'm sending in my XBOX 360 Elite back to Microsoft for it to be repaired. My optical drive has gone out. My consoles acts as if it has no disc in the disc drive.

How prominent is this problem? Microsoft has a knowledge base article that deals with the error --- so I'm not the only one who has this problem. Anyone else having troubles with your disc drive?

My drive didn't totally go out at once. My drive started to fail in early November after the release of Call of Duty 4. For some reason, CoD4 would fail to boot about 50% of the time. Other games played fine. By early January, Halo 3 and CoD4 would fail to boot 90% of the time. Rock Band (and a few other games) would play just fine. By late January, 99% of the time all discs would not work even my trusty Rock Band disc.

I must have tried two dozen "tricks" to try to get my discs to boot. All of them have quit working. With no more tricks up my sleeve, I called Microsoft. After 10 minutes on the phone, Microsoft issued a repair order. I should have another Elite coming back to me in no longer than 3 weeks (1 week for me to get the empty shipping box - 2 weeks for Microsoft to repair the box and send me a replacement).

This will be my 4th XBOX 360 console.

narcogen's picture

My 360 died with the same symptoms. The problems started right after I got Halo 3.

First the 360 would fail to load Halo 3.

Then it stopped loading any 360 disc.

Then it stopped loading any disc.

The year warranty was up, and it's not a RROD problem.

For other reasons my only practical way of addressing the problem was acquiring another 360, which I am still waiting to receive.

For a while I was able to get discs to load by applying gentle pressure to the top case, just to the right of the Xbox 360 logo. I got this tip from a person who had a problem getting discs to eject-- he found this helped his problem also, temporarily.

Rampant for over seven years.

Decompiled's picture

I would sometimes have that issue if I closed the tray from the dashboard. I also had an issue with the tray immediately ejecting itself after being closed. It would sometimes do that five times before staying in, but it red ringed last week so hopefully my third won't have any issues.

Master Kim's picture

I've been having the same problem, but only when I put in a media disk with music. I have to open the tray and put it back in again. GG MS' Xbox team.

Xray's picture

Something similair happened with my brothers elite. When COD 4 was in the Xbox it would say "unreadable disk" and I would open the the disk drive and close it and it would be fine.

Mintz's picture

What is the world coming to?

JDOGG85's picture

I had to ship my last xbox back because of the disc drive going out. I told people this would be the next big recall issue with the 360. Though I love my 360, microsoft sure did put out an obviously rushed and overly flawed architectured machine! I guess they are paying for it now...I bet this is gonna cost them another half billion or so to replace once everyone else starts losing optical drives.

TheRedOwl's picture

Wow, that sucks rap. I've been lucky enough to only have to send it in for one repair, this exact one actually. It would not read game discs or it would say I needed to put it in a Xbox 360 console :(
GL.

Ronix's picture

Despite all of it's problems, I'd still take an xbox 360 over a ps3 any time. Of course, I'd also rather be jack-hammered in the penis than get a PS3.

I kid, I kid. (not really)

Master Kim's picture

I would rather not be jack-hammered in the penis or buy a penis. I win that way.

rapture's picture

GG Microsoft.

They sent me a box through UPS for me to send my console back to them. However, they did not send me a shipping label. There was no way for me to send my console back to them.

So, I called up XBOX support. I told the CSR that all I needed was a shipping label. He didn't seem to care. 30 minutes later I had gone through the entire troubleshooting routine again. All I needed was a shipping label. Everyone's time was wasted because they didn't include a shipping label.

russ_scotland's picture

Oh No! It finally happened to me, shortly after an update from Project Gotham 4, the disc drive failed to recognise ANY discs.

I tried all the Software resets I could find but nothing worked. Now I am left with an Out of Warranty Xbox and £380 out of Pocket.

I ain't paying Microsoft to fix a problem they created, Theres nothing wrong with the discs because theres no error message from the console, no red lights and theres nothing wrong with the hardware because the disc drive works fine under indurance tests. It definately seems to be a Software Fault. It only happened yesterday but I'm missing it already :(

Its probably one of those hidden windows myths, you know "Pick a Random date to Stop Working after the Warranty Experation" with a little tick in the box.

Ahh am so annoyed, I really liked my Xbox, so many things you take for granted until there gone

WAHHHAHAHA

Sudeko's picture

Alright mens this just happened to me. I am fixing to call up a lawyer or something because i have been going online and finding hundereds after hundreds of people with the exact same problem, microsoft extended the warantee for the ring of death which means that you are having a hardware failure, but the disc drive going out is not covered by that. Seems like microsoft is heading for another class action lawsuits. Please e-mail me your stories at xboxcomplaints@yahoo.com and let me know how many of you are really out there with this problem.

Thank you

5 weeks later, my box has returned. I hope they give me 1-2 months of XBL Gold and access to all the time sensitive DLC that I missed.

1-month XBL card is pretty standard.

I think you're about SOL on the time-sensitive DLC, though. What did you miss that you wanted?

Im going to call this one the Ash Tray..because I feel like flicking ashes in this box after yet another Micro-Blunder. To bad I need my Xbox to survive now like my PC. Gates has got us all by the balls and he gets to give a good squeze when hes board of ruling the universe. My bs aside, I was wondering if anyone has experinced there 5.1 sound not working while recieving the Ash Tray (open tray). My box will play all the downloaded content in 5.1 sound but anything that plays off the disk it only runs in 2 channel stereo. Im only asking becasue Im wondering if I have 2 problems instead of 1. Thanks for any input. GL all!

rapture's picture

I got the 1-mo of XBL Gold card. GG, I guess.

I have not been able to play for three weeks now and just got charged another months fees!!! Im waiting on my 1st X-Box coffin to come back, maybe two more week? Bill Gates you owe me big time don't make me go PS3 you rich bastard!

I have the fatal "Open tray" error stupid machine thinks it has a disc in the drive when it's empty like my pockets, Bill's fault!

deluzioned's picture

I am about to send my console in for this problem before my warranty expires in june....are they going to try and make me pay them to fix it since its not the RRoD? if thats the case ill replace the laser myself

rapture's picture

@deluzioned: MS didn't make me pay for my repair. RRoD isn't the only way to get a free replacement under warranty.

rapture's picture

CORRECTION: I meant to say "RRoD isn't the only way to get a free replacement under warranty." Sorry if I caused confusion.

My box isn't playing DVDs. When I put one in, all I get is a flashing Xbox360 logo that makes me feel like I'm going to have a seizure if I stare too long.

xbox is charging a $100 dollars to fix the open tray problem what a crock since its out of warranty

pissed off's picture

i agree with you Sudeko, i think more people should take legal actions against those lazy ass scam artists. i have viewed numerous forums, as well as youtube that suggests that microsoft knew about the flaws, but continue to benefit at our expense. Now, i dont know about some of these other people, but "i aint made outta money". since i ran out of warranty and i dont have the red ring of death, this "unplayable disc" flaw will cost me $100. Oh and heres some interesting news for you people that dont think they are ripping us off: the xbox 360 console costs $50-$60 to manufacture, but yet they charge $280-$400 to purchase. Many of the accesories cost $100-$20 (many of which should already be included in the systems in the first place). Now doesnt that sound like pimping, and i for one dont like getting pimped, so the next time my system reads "unplayable or open tray", you might see me on the news. i "will" take legal action. more people should do the same. i know a lot of people, as well as me, love video games, but we have to recoginize when we are getting ripped off. if you dont believe me, do some research on the issues that the console has. all problems with the system leads to 2 errors, trust me. some people send their systems 4 or more times, you shouldnt have to do that for a $300-$400 system. something is seriously wrong when you should ever have to moddify it just for it to work.you should never have to open your console, ever.

sooperdooper's picture

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! i have the damn ashtray!!>.<
out of fuking no where!!!!
i bought a used version of assassins creed
and tried to play it and i thought the game was fukked up (i was pissed id have to go back)but i got cuirious and tried to play my brand new copy of oblivion, and then skate, and then every disk in my house
and microdick says i have to pay them!?!?!!

rapture's picture

At the Penn and Teller LAN, I was hit the Open Tray error over and over. I did not experience this error until I took the box to Midnight's. After repeatedly opening and closing the tray, finally a game would read. I hope this doesn't carry over to playing back at my home, although I think it will.

Mintz's picture

Would it still be under warranty at this point?

n00boob's picture

So up until Tuesday, my Xbox 36 ran great. Tuesday night I take out Soul Caliber IV, plug in fable and start getting geeked out. 20 minutes in, right after I am about to go to the castle it freezes. I think it was just a minor problem, went to bed, woke up the next day and tried again. Right after the bird poops, I freeze and get a tad annoyed.

I take out the cd, pop in another game, (SOUL CALIBER IV), and lo and behold my game doesn't work. So the game I was playing a day before getting Fable doesn't work, now. And from then on out, no matter waht game I play it has turned into open tray issue. The biggest differnece for me and everyone else is I don't have internet. I don't have the co-op download. I don't have any updates other than the one that game wtih the game.

Now lets continue to Friday. Three days of anger thinking I now need to replace a drive on my Box. Call up Msoft and their uselessness tells me that I will be charged to get my xbox that was working fixed...HA. I than decide to borrow a coworkers XBOX cause he wasn't using it. I hook up Fable to it, load it up, and it freezes during the intro. Now aout his XBOX. Everything was whipped on the Harddrive. Only update was the one that came wiht Fable 2. Then one that won't let you play the game unless you update your XBOX. So now I know its the game. I pop out Fable and almost frisbee it against the wall. Place in GTA, run it on his XBOX, and it freezes. Notice a trend

So now I have two older XBox's(bout 2 years old on mine, and his maybe older) that don't play games. I have a new game that will not play, along with an assortment of others that are now great coasters. So what do I do? Sell the XBOX? Sell the other XBox? Buy a Wii? I am so F***ING pissed. Had I never bought Fable 2, I could have happily played any of my other games this weekend. Now, I can't play anything. So Lionshead, what are you going to do? You have a very angry gamer here, who has absolutely no system. THANKS.

I appreciate the fact that you teased us with FABLE 2, pushing it back further and further, and than upon giving us it, you instantly take it away. Thats just great. So my 60 dollar game, and 400 dollar(at one point) XBox are useless, and if anyone suggests to buy anything else Xbox related right now I might go off. And if this doesn't get fixed, you can certainly be assured that I will not only avoid xbox from here on out, but continue to never buy a Microsoft labeled product(Vista issues anyone?)

Sincerely,

GameLess in Chicago

P.S. For those of you who care, I have tried every thing on the web to get this game and my xbox working.

rapture's picture

Well looky what I have...again.

The OPEN TRAY error.

I'm hosed. I've been trying for 30 minutes to get my XBOX 360 to read a disc and it's not working. I'm afraid another repair is going to have to take place. If it does, I will be on my 6th XBOX.

I've been getting the OPEN TREY error on this 360 for the last few weeks, but usually it would boot a game after a couple minutes of opening and closing the tray.

The timing isn't great as GoW2 is coming out at midnight tomorrow.

Midnight's picture

I've got the box and packaging that fits the 360 left over from my replacement last month. You are welcome to use it to get your box off faster and cheaper. (they now ask that you provide your own box). It was fast for me. ~2 work weeks start to finish.

Called MS support today. 15 minutes for them to tell me that I'd have to call back 2 hours later because their system was down.

I call back 4 hours later and they tell me that the systems are still down and that I'll have to call back tomorrow.

I'll have to pay $99 to get my box fixed because it is out of warranty. What can I do? I'll pay the $99.

That's how mine started the first time around. When CoD4 came out, I started noticing the error. And then I had about a month or so until it would happen everytime.

Hopefully your problem will go away.

fredell's picture

I've been through four 360's now.

Truth is I'll probably go through four more, it's just the best system.

That aside, I am going to start looking online for anyone filing a class action suit against Microsoft for related issues. It can only be a matter of time right? I mean, look at all of us. Not just on this website but all over the place.

I sit on the floor for thirty minutes, opening and closing the damn tray, blowing inside sometimes hoping the old nintendo trick will work, turning it on and off waiting for the sound of the disc to catch and go. I just wanna play some Fallout 3.

Ha. I've done the same thing. 30 minutes of opening and closing the door. And nothing.

As far as the class action, maybe there's a group starting one up. It probably wouldn't be too hard to find.

So my brother's XBOX 360 gets this "open tray" error bullshit. I wake up this morning to his angry face telling me I suck and that I broke his console. Granted I played CoD4 last night and was the last to use it but hump this shit. I hate you MSoft! My brother hates me and he might disown me if he has to pay for another repair. Get your shit together! If I have to buy him a new console then I'ma buy him a PS3. Yeah I said it. Class Action Lawsuit you say? Watch out MSoft, you have a lot of angry gamers with nothing to do because you sold them faulty units (knowingly?)!

My 360 came back to me today.

The UPS lady knew exactly what it was because she has delivered so many 360's. She noted that Christmas 2007 was a busy time for returns. Also mentioned the RB guitar returns.

Midnight's picture

When I shipped my last 360 to get repaired the UPS store clerk entered the zip code and said
"I know exactly what this is."
I replied, "You get a lot of these?"
"Oh yeah."

My 360 only ever broke once, and I got a new one <2 weeks later. Sorry to hear you guys have so many more problems...

Midnight's picture

I have two 360s, each of which has broken once. I'm not that upset with my returns. They have both gone very smoothly. I am just interested in the debacle that is the Xbox 360 hardware SNAFU of 2005-2010.

Bought my brother a 360 from a friend not too long ago. The thing worked great, but now that we have it home, it won't play some games. Told my brother that he needed to to put the disk in an Xbox 360. very odd I thought. Then it gave the open disk. Will Xbox honor the warranty? The damn thing isn't that old, and it's not like we dumped coffee in the thing. Anybody got an idea of how Xbox deals with people? Do I need the receipts? Thanks much for any help.

rapture's picture

@RyanK: Microsoft will fix their hardware for free for 12 months after purchase for just about any error. Additionally, they will repair the Red Ring of Death error for free for up to three years after purchase. Non-RRoD error repairs cost $99 outside of the 12 month grace period.

You won't need a receipt. Just call in, give them the serial number and tell them when you bought the console.

If you don't like what they tell you, then you can wait for the Red Ring of Death error at which time they'll offer you a free repair.

well where to start i have had 5 xbox 360's and all of them have had a disk drive problem i have taken 3 of them apart and all of them 3 had a 2 year old disk drive in them they should know that a 2 year shelf life is half of the life of the drive even if it ant working it is still collecting dust and other debree in it and then they run them thro another factory it dont make sence i never had a problem with my xbox but with the 360 a million and they all seem to stem from the disk drive even the RROD is cause partly by the disk drive having to sipn so fast so when are the going to offer a 3 year warranty for them and when r the people aloud to start taking action in court on it cause we r putting out millions and getting shit in return i think we should start a class action law suite agains them and get some of this money back theat we put out and we get shit for quality and it ant there problem just send it in and then u get no com for the xbox live time u miss or the games it may have messed up do to por quality i thought Made In The USA ment something and us the consumer have to just sit on it no it should be the other way around and it shouldnt take 3 week to 7 week to be able to use some thing we the consumer payed for it bad enought that they only put a 5 year life on electronics
If any one wants to help start a potictionand try to get the ball rolling u can e mail me at steromaster@aol.com all the help i could get would be helpful

Sniperfromhell's picture

Oh man..This whole open disc tray thing is really lame. haha Looks like A LOT of people having this problem, I didn't read through all of this, but did for some. I use to have to open, and close my tray for quite a bit of time. I recently stopped playing my 360 because I didn't have gold. It was less then 3months ago I believe, now It won't even work. Sadly I went out bought Fable2 for like $61(I think I got screwed over on that price since it was used..)I put it in, and notice it's not working...I blew in it, and continue trying for a hour or two. Soon I decided to have my father use a air compressor thingy on it. hoping to get a lot of the dust out, and of course...Didn't work. A few hours ago I decided if I can ship it in, I am not waiting how ever long I need to, and didn't think I really could. I opened that sucker, and I tried to clean the eye with rubbing alcohol, and little bit inside. Of course didn't work.. Now I am probably going to take fable2 back, and maybe just stick with ps3 games, or pc until I can come up with $40 to buy a new driver..

If someone does happen to find a nice easy , no cost, shipping, way to fix this problem that would be awesome. I hope you all don't get this problem with your xboxs, or new ones, and to the ones that have I hope it doesn't get worst. =P GL to all.

My Xbox was working perfectly for about 13 months, then I got the Open tray problem. It wouldn't play any discs- no CD's, DVDs or Games. Since I was already out of warranty, I figured it couldn't hurt to open it up. It took me about 15 minutes to get the xbox all opened up (using guides on the Internet). Once inside, all I did was blow the dust out, and I took a moistened Q tip and gently rubbed the laser eye in the DVD drive a few times. Then I put it back together. Not sure what I did, but its been working perfectly again... I haven't had the Open Tray error in over a week... Maybe my laser was just gunked up.

Got my shiny black xbox elite last christmas. Now, about 9 days after this christmas got the dreaded open tray error. Now it won't play anything. I've done nothing wrong, this is M$'s error not mine, I shouldn't have to fork out for this repair, especially when so many other people are having exactly the same problem.

For those in the UK, here's what we do: go to BBc's Watchdog programme and tell them exactly what's going on. If enough people inundate their site, maybe they can do something against the might of the Micro$oft Corp (the f*cking thieves!).

Here's their site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/

Go to it, I certainly am. And the best of luck.

My advice is to pay the $100 and keep on gaming. I mean, you have to pay near $50 a year just to play online so $100 is a small cost to a system that you've got some much invested in.

This is the complaint I sent to Microsoft via snail mail.

To Whom this concerns,

I purchased a Xbox360 when the machine first came out, paying well over $700 for the unit + accessories as it was the hottest product in my opinion and had to have one. Since then I have purchased numerous games (about 40 in total). Some time after; my Xbox360 produced the Red Ring, rendering the Xbox360 useless. I sent the machine back and received a Refurbished console. When I received the console; I placed it on it's shelf where it had not moved. This second console hardly got used as I was shipped to New Orleans for half a year to help rebuild some of the devastation that occurred there (the machine was not used during this time). When I came home I used the console for short periods of time over the following months as my experience in New Orleans opened other opportunities for me at work and had little time to play games.

Now that things have settled down I would love to sit and play with my console, unfortunately my console no longer works. Again. This time the CD-ROM has malfunctioned (will not read any CD placed in the tray). I proceeded to call Microsoft's technical support to get my machine repaired; Bare with me as I will be giving all recorded information for your reference.

On January 2nd the very first support Rep I talked to on the phone indicated to me; since my Xbox360 was out of warranty I would be charged for the repair of the console, I indicated to him that I would not pay to have my console repaired as this is not a customer fault issue and that my first console was sent to Microsoft for repair already and a refurbished unit was sent back to me. He indicated to me that he would talk to his supervisor after he created a repair order; he followed procedure and we went threw the steps by placing several CD's in the tray and testing the machine, we also checked the date on the console to make sure it was set correctly, after following his instructions; several steps later he indicated to me that the CD-ROM was indeed malfunctioning, I was placed on hold as he talked to his supervisor and it was agreed that because I had already sent the Xbox360 once before for repair he told me that this machine would be repaired free of cost. I was very happy that he was able to do this. The empty box was sent to me and a reference number was given, this number is as follows:

10893**** (Jan 2nd 2009)

Several days had passed and when the day came when the empty box should have been delivered and was not, (Jan 8th) I called into Microsoft and asked how much longer I should expect to receive my empty box. The Rep at that time indicated to me that it is still en-route and I should receive the empty box any day, possibly Monday. He gave me a tracking number and another reference number both as follows:

Reference number (Jan 8th 2009): 10900*****

Tracking number: 823031*****

At the time of receiving the tracking number for the parcel I was not told which courier that it was shipped threw, I had assumed it was shipped threw UPS as this is what it stated when I logged into my account to check my repair status online. Unfortunately it was not UPS the empty box was shipped threw, it was actually Purolator, I again had to call back to Microsoft just to find out this information.

Several more days had passed; thinking that it was just delayed and not shipped to my home for reasons out of their control, I waited some more. I was unable to find a contact number until today (Jan 16th, 2009) when I called back into Microsoft (again) where the Rep was able to help me find a phone number I could call to check the status of my package.

Reference number: 10908*****

It turns out that the package was sent to Burlington instead of Oakville (city where I live) and no notification was sent to me from Purolator, when I finally got to the office today they told me that they tried to call me the other day and the phone number provided by Microsoft was incorrect and was unable to leave me a message. They sent the empty box back to Microsoft. (I was not very happy at all by this point) tracking info as follows:

When I returned home I called Microsoft back again to explain what happen. At that time the rep informed me that we would have to delete the old order and create a new order and that she would give me a service number that I would be able to print a label and use my own box so that I could send the Xbox360 back for repair quickly, she gave me a number and told me to use my postal code to get to a page where I would be able to print off a label to use on my own box. She told me that it would take a few minutes for it to process and then ended the call at that point with reference number :

10908*****

After waiting some time, the service number she provided to me did not work and it indicated that my postal code did not match the service number. After trying several times again; I decided to call Microsoft back.

This is where things have gone real bad, after talking to a very nice Rep who reviewed my history and found that there were many errors over the last couple of weeks she indicated to me that the original rep created a RED RING repair order...what??? I explained to her that the Red Ring error is what I had happen on my first Xbox360 console and that it was now a CD-ROM problem. She created another new order and partially went threw the steps for trouble shooting the CD-ROM then stopped and stated, “you already went threw all this didn't you?” I told her “yes” ; she finished the order without asking anymore questions. At this time the system indicated to her that I would have to pay to have my console repaired and that she could not over write it without a supervisor's authority, since this is what had to happen the first time I thought, “Great OK, lets get her to do that”, The rep got in touch with a supervisor (Frieda, not sure of the spelling) She came on the line and took over the call from the Rep, she then proceeded to tell me that in order for my Xbox360 to be repaired I would have to pre-pay. I told her that was what was not agreed upon on the 2nd of Jan, she then proceeded to read to me the policies (word for word) from her handbook. She told me that she would give me 50% off and that the work would be warrantied for a year and at that point I refused to discuss this with her any further as she was not listening to anything I had to say as the book she was reading from was rule and would not accept that I was supposed to be getting my console repaired at no cost.

I am so frustrated right now with the customer service that I have received to date about this issue, I know a thing or two about making sure the customer is happy, even when it doesn't seem like a big deal. I am currently a manager working under ***** Communications in the Greater Toronto area in Canada and I have learned that making sure your customers, no matter how old, or how long they have been using said services, you do what you can to keep them.

What I have experienced over the last 2 weeks has been quite possibly the worst example of customer service that I have ever encountered.

I will no longer subscribe to xbox live, I will no longer recommend your company as a viable alternative to the other competitors currently on the market and I will no longer spend Hundreds of dollars on Microsoft games or other products.

I am also not expecting a reply to this message.

Thank you,

Same thing here man, I had mine for about 13 months and it's doing the exact same thing. I'm gonna be opening it up tommorrow and hopefully that will work.

I just got the same problem. But i would rather get punched in the face by chuck norris than have to talk to the god damn machine in the beginning. And whenever I call it seems I get the person with the strongest accent so i cant even understand them.

Sooo this is my second xbox, and its been running flawlessly for about 1-2 years now
My bro goes out to rent fallout 3, which i've always never had an eye for, but now its growing on me. Wake up this morning and my brother tells me that none of our discs are working. So im like wtf this is lumberjackish, so i vacumm the shit out of every hole in the xbox i can without opening it up. Still doesnt work.
Recently my gears 2 disc has been freezing, but its usually online, so i figured it was the lag factor, seems that i was wrong.
Im gonna try calling xbox support today, i think im just gonna lie and say i have the red rings of death because i aint paying for this shit again

Dude, there's another tray error. It's where the 360 think's it opening, but the tray is still in. My warrenty had expried around Holiday 08'. If I do have to send it for repairs and pay, I'll just say that I got RRoD since I have gotten it before, but I'm one of the lucky ones who just have to shut the 360 then turn it on to get it to work.

Well boys, go ahead and add me to the list. Happened to me last night. Started playing COD4 and it was working fine. Jumped out of a match to join a friends room/party and couldn't connect to the party. I ended up shutting the whole thing down and from there I've got nothing but the open tray error. I popped in GRAW2 and it works perfectly, went back to COD4 an got nothing. Tonight my wife popped in a disk from one of her tv shows and couldn't get that to play, but disk 2 works fine. Found a whole bunch of people online who said 'tapping' on the case above the disk made theirs work, but no such luck for me. I'm tempted to switch to PS3, but I got a whole group of people I've met on LIVE and play with all the time that only have 360s, so I'll probably just have to bend over and let ol Bill have his way with me, and then pay Him for. Go figure. I thought the days of smacking your console or putting the cartridge in and out really fast end in the early 90's, but apparently the only thing that has really changed is the price tag.

13 month old console - out of warrantee
COD4 for the last few months
OPEN TRAY error...

Return to Service Centre for repair
Almost £80!

How can this be legal when it's obviously a design flaw?

Rawk77's picture

just happened to me. i put in a porn cd in on Thurs. and it didn't work, i then turned it off and went to bed. Yesterday (Fri.) my cuz came over and we're amped and ready to play madden '09 and the "open trey" error occurs.

i try fixes but nothing. the next day, i'm on here finding out i gotta pay a C note for something MS did. I got punked. But all i can do is pay the money and get my console back.

I have a high powered gaming PC that put my 360 and a PS3 to shame, so that will more than do until my xbox Shit-lite gets shipped back.

what else am i gonna do..i'm not gonna get a ps3. i'd rather sent in my 360 for 10 repairs than get a PS3. i just love the 360 too much.

w/e. hopefully the 720 won't have these frustrating issues.

Well..it's time to call the gates gang and and give them their extortion money.

Casey's picture

Wow, this just happened to me and I'm seeing how huge of a problem it is. It happened after playing Fable 2 for about a day, and I returned Fable 2 and got my money back just to be safe, and to put that fifty odd bucks towards the repair. I don't want to hump up my console trying to homebrew fix it, as I'm not an electronics geek and the thing breaks so easily anyhow, its like playing with a live bomb. I'm not blaming Fable 2 for basic malfunctions of the console itself, though I know the game has some issues and overtaxes the system on its own.

I'm not in a rush to get it repaired, this is my second console now with a new problem (last time it was error reading disc - to eventual RRoD). I'm not even sure they restarted my warranty when they replaced it for free, but nonetheless - oddly enough, it blew out on the 13th month since the first repair. So even if they had replaced the warranty, it would be out of warranty, but only just.

This is a major scam and I think whoever took Bill Gates' place when he stepped down from the Microsoft helm is in on it. I really hope that Microshit gets a$$raped by millions of angry gamers and is forced out of business already. Vista is a piece of sh*t, and the 360 is one of the most unreliable videogame consoles to ever come out of the gate. Its easy to develop for ('like a dumb computer') - which benefits gamers with all of the great exclusives and games with an edge over the PS3 version, but just barely.

The console itself is a tempestuous bitch who gives you the hottest free nookie for about a year and then suddenly you wake up with chlamydia and gonorrhea and herpes and crabs, and not only that, she's suddenly telling you that you're going to have to give her a whole bunch of money to get any more good times from her, but because she knows all of the right moves and because all of those VD's are treatable if you go to some special doctors that only she knows, you give in and pay her, only to have the f*cking cycle repeat itself ad nauseam.

F*ck you Microsoft, f*ck you indeed.

PLANNED OBSELECENCE. This happened to me, and after 3 weeks, it still doesn't work. Microsoft obviously programmed the machine to just break a month after my warranty expired so I would give them a hundred bucks. Well, sorry Bill, it's not happening. I'm getting a new DVD drive and fixing it myself.

drfunkeys's picture

add one more ashtray to the pile. This used to be my friend's xbox and I think he had already returned it a few times for RRoD. I just bought a badass video card for my pc, so I think the xbox will now collect dust. Anybody want to buy it? It can still play those shitty xbox arcade games ;)

ALASKA Boy 12's picture

Ok I thought I would never say this but i am beginning to hate the 360. First xbox 360 I got had the open error, so my dad got pissed and said I was shoving it in with my hand, which i was actually using the button. Fun how parents believe us right? Second xbox (current) is giving me the put disc in an xbox 360!? So what now? It just tore the hell out of COD5 and now it doesnt want to play halo wars. So my only theory is this, it spun cod5 around, hitting the laser and possibly damaging it. If this is the case do i send it in again? Rememberr i Live in AK so it is a month or two before I get my xbox back. WHat do I do? Also this xbox has the open error AGAIN after i had it repaired. Xbox SuCks.

Ms customer service sucks's picture

i have the same problem with my elite it is only 3 weeks out of warranty. i filed a BBB complaint and got a call from some guy that would not even talk to me he said im sorry there is nothing i can do for you sad thing is i have 4 360's and 3 are down at the moment.. ms needs to fix all their issues more and more people are going to jump ship..

BobbyDigital3's picture

Being an xbox 360 owner has had its great moments and its sad moments. My first 360 got the RROD in less than 6 months of ownership...when I got it back it lasted about another 8months. The funny thing is when it was returned to me the volume didn't work aka ship it back out for another month...After a decent run of about a year and a half I got the Open Tray Error aka it couldn't read any disks. I was obviously out of warranty and the RROD extended warranty would not apply either. So after numerous attempts with customer service and arguing with managers and people who ran me through the same procedure I had done a million times, I was forced to give up. Why would I pay $99-$119.99 dollars for something that has broken for the 4th time???I mean logically what is the point? Being a math major, I calculated all the down time and xbox live I had wasted (not to mention the broken wireless headset that lasted maybe 3 months, rechargeable battery packs that no longer held a charge,etc.). I presented my case to "helpful" representatives of Microsoft in basically a plea not to pay the ridiculous fee they wanted to charge me. I was told that I would get a phone call back within 3-5 business days from a representative from the Customer support center in regards to my inquiry. About a week later the call came. I honestly believe that it was from the same woman who I had talked to on the phone for about 45 minutes pleading my case too. My assumption is that she got tired of my voice and figured a week's vacation from me would be enough time for her to reiterate the same thing she had been telling me along. I wish I could tell you that I went out and bought a PS3 and smashed my 360 to bits (Office Space style), but I can't...I'm a sucker. I gave in to everything I knew was wrong. It's like being a smoker, your doing something that you know is going to kill you. Me and my friends talked about filming the carnage of breaking my old xbox, I was all about it until I thought of the great memories it had brought me. I mean honestly, you can't blame a child for its parents mistakes right?? It wasn't the xbox's fault that it was made poorly (drug use, alcohol abuse,...robot abuse?). I am now a proud 2 week owner of a new arcade bundle (switched my hard drive,hd wires, etc.) and the smile is back on my face, momentarily. It's like the end of a scary movie when the beast/ghost is finally killed and everyone can rest...until you hear that eerie music playing...or the glimmer of those everlasting red rings...

Yupp, I love reading all these stories. Honestly makes me want to blow up Microsofts main corp. They are SCAMMING US, THEIR IS NO OTHER EXPLAINATION. I feel so bad for the 1800xbox guy I talked to, seeing how I was FURIOUS. Screaming, cussing all of it and none of it his fault. This is the 2nd time I've had the problem and sent it in the first time to recieve a new xbox that is now doing the SAME THING 9 mths later. All this hear of law suits and taking action, I AM DOWN! Lets take down these humping money hungry bastards at microsoft. Just think 1000 people with this(Which ya alot more than that) and they make TEN THOSAND humpING DOLLARS....Really sad how human beings and companies can screw their own that bad. hump you microsoft.

Well, now that I have 2 F*CKING AshTrays, I think I'm going to stick with PC gaming after tomorrow. Bye Bye, Pieces of shit sitting on my F*cking TV. Hello, Reliable PC games.
Although, PC gaming isn't all that reliable, It's a helluvalot more reliable than the ShitBoxes sitting around gathering dust. I tallied it up. I spent $1,568.95 on those 2 xboxes and their games and accessories. I'm probably not going to get more than 200 for them all.

Thank you, For the 13 months of good gaming then shitting the bed on me, you overpriced technological whore.

This works for me every time so far. Removing the disc and closing (making it try to read without a disc in the drive) when it returns to "open tray" open and put your disc back in. I've had this happen a few times and so far this works for me everytime.

Ive had this problem for ages now, im not being scammed into paying £70 to have it fixed becuase my years warranty is up, how is that fair when you get three years for other errors?

I shall ring them tomorrow, offering them threats to look for a competitors console and report them to watchdog in the UK, although i already have.

Threatened BT (BRITISH TELECOM) and they sent me a free router and upgraded my internet package at a lower price.

Ive found temporary solutions to the open tray error, but ive had enough now.
