The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.
N'Gai at Level Up has an amazing interview with Bungie writer Joe Staten. In it was this gem:
"Over time I think everybody around the table agreed that the Master Chief is best left as the most important supporting cast member."
Supporting cast member? This revelation has certainly changed my expectations for the movie (not in a negative way). Go read the rest of the interview and see if you've got a different perspective of the Halo movie now.
Be sure to read how Staten thinks MC will be personified by his body movements.

SECONDARY ROLE?!SECONDARY
SECONDARY ROLE?!SECONDARY ROLE?ONE!1??1/1??ELEVEN You'd think the Arbiter would take a backseat. I'll read the interview l8r.

How hard would it be to have
How hard would it be to have him as the main character? The fall of reach had a heavy dose of the chief and I believe he can speak...so not sure I could understand him being a secondary character and having alot of funky body movements. There are others that play important roles in the Halo universe...Capt. Keyes, Sgt. Johnson, Miranda, Cortana, Admiral ______, Arbiter, guilty spark, and so on. Doing a halo movie trilogy would make sense to me. Start with fall of reach time period and move on through H3...I would watch all 3 as long as Uwe Boll didn't walk within a few miles of them.
If you read the article
If you read the article you'll find that almost everyone involved agrees it's the issue of not showing John's face. They say that it would be very difficult to convey his emotions as the lead actor without the audience seeing his face.
I'm no director, so I'll take their word for it. It is a little disappointing, though. I agree with the trilogy idea.
Movie 1: history of conflict with the covenant, John 117, Spartan program, the Fall of Reach, and leave them finding the first Halo as a cliffhanger
Movie 2: Halo 1 and Halo 2.
Movei 3: Halo 3.
I think you could do a lot with H3's content as a film.
I just don't get why not
I just don't get why not seeing his face would detract from his emotions. He has a voice, he has cortana...hell during the games you could tell his emotions during cut scenes without his voice or even with his voice. As a fan or not, I would think not seeing his face would add that much more to the mystique known as MC. I can understand the supporting acter role...I mean he would be a main character, but we know how much other stuff is going on in the halo games at a given time.
There is so much halo crap to work with, I just don't see how it will not be made into a movie. It would rape in alot of money for someone.
What I read into Staten's
What I read into Staten's comments wasn't so much that there would be another character that would single-handedly take on the role of lead actor, but that other character(s) will collectively be shown in more scenes of the movie, i.e. the Arbiter, Cortana, Cpt. Keyes, 343 GS, Sgt. Johnson, other Marines, etc., while MC still maintains the most important role.
Most of what the Halo games have been is their interaction with the Chief, anyway, and I doubt the movie will stray too far from that trend. They may expand on some of what goes on away from MC, but I think it will all somehow get tied back into him at some point or other, and the climaxes will no doubt have him directly involved.
Good points, JDOGG.

well why hadn't I thought of this before? This does make great sense, along with D00's comment.

Jdogg is right. Master
Jdogg is right. Master Chief's helmet is his face.

Truth be told, according to the books, Spartans use hand signs to convey their emotions, such as two fingers to where your mouth should be on faceplate=Smile. Not that this is supposed to cover up the fact that Master Chief's helmet is, like you said, his face. Also, the signals are solely between two or more Spartans. Sadly, looks like Master Chief is a lone Spartan: the book series is chock-full of every alive Spartan possible; save the Chief.
