I twitter. Won't you twitter with me?

Twitter is a very basic site. All you do is say what your doing and you can see a stream of what your friends are doing as well.
I've got mine hooked up to my facebook status updates so both are updated when I update my twitter site. You can also set it up to where you receive text messages when your friends update what they are doing.
I've been thinking about a way to send out notifications of when I'm available to play 360. I figured out how to do it here at the THX shoutbox, but it requires a lot of work. Twitter does the same thing - only better.
The cool part is where you send out a Twitter and people meet up with you. Like say I send a msg out to let people know I'm hanging at the Scene Lounge at Bridge Street. People get the messages on their cell phone or email and they can join up.
Twitter has an open API so you can do some cool things on the backend of Twitter - like find other Twitterer's that are X distance from you.
I like that they allow you to turn of SMS notifications at certain times of the day (like at the times that I'm usually asleep).
Twitter is the mobile app of the year.

All that functionality pisses me off because I can't use it. I just upgraded to a cell phone plan that allows me to have unlimited txt msgs, and it costs ~$60/month(out of my own pocket), so why the hell won't my service support Twitter??
I just made a "twitter".don't see what the hype is(yet?)

Found this article on 17 ways to use Twitter:
Twitter is a micro blogging platform which allows you to publish short messages of less than 140 characters through different mediums like IM, cellphones and the web.
It has a social element as well, as it allows users to befriend and monitor each other’s messages or updates. So what you have here is a publishing tool that can be either public and private.
1. Personal Branding. Twitter is a social media platform you can use to build your personal brand. It has the primary benefit of developing a casual persona and establishes you as a social personality that is connected and approachable. As Twitter adoption increases, new users will be drawn towards well established Twitter personas.
2. Get Feedback. Need an alternative perspective on how a website looks or the right course of action to take? Blast out a message asking for advice and you’ll receive replies from other users. This collective intelligence can be used as fodder for articles or projects.
3. Hire People. Need a good logo designer, marketer or programmer? Send out a message asking for recommendations. This is a very quick and easy way to hire freelancers or even companies based on familiar recommendations.
4. Direct traffic. Twitter can be used to get traffic to your websites or the sites of friends. If you ask your friends to tweet about it, the message will spread faster and further as other active users pick it up. There is a viral nature to all types of news, even on a site like Twitter.
5. Read News. Twitter users often link to useful sites or articles and can be a source of scoops and alternative news. You can also subscribe to Twitter feeds for specific websites/conferences, which allows you to receive and view content quickly. This is very useful for active social news participants.
6. Make New Friends. Like any other social network, Twitter has a built-in function for you to befriend and track the messages of other users. This is an easy way for you connect with people outside of your usual circle. Make an effort to add active users you find interesting. A Twitter acquaintance can be developed into a long lasting friendship.
7. Network for benefits. Twitter can be used as a socializing platform for you to interact with other like-minded people, especially those in the same industry. It can be used to establish consistent and deeper relationships for future benefits such as testimonials or peer recommendations.
8. Use it as a ToDo list. Use Twitter to record down what you need to do while you are away from the computer. Mark the tweet as a favorite to file it for referencing. Another alternative is to use an Online task management service that is synced with Twitter. One example is Remember The Milk.
9. Business Management. Twitter can be used as a company intranet that connects employees to one another. Workers can liaise with each other when working on group projects. Particularly useful when certain workers go out often in the field. Updates could be set to private for security reasons.
10. Notify Your Customers. Set up a Twitter feed for the specific purpose of notifying customers when new products come in. Customers can subscribe via mobile or RSS for instant notification. Twitter can also be used to provide mini-updates for one-on-one clients.
11. Take Notes. Twitter provides you with an easy way to record important ideas or concepts you want to explore further. Include links relevant to ideas you want to explore. Note taking can also be done offline via mobile applications.
12. Event Updates. Businesses can use Twitter as a means to inform event participants and latest event happenings/changes. This is a hassle-free way of disseminating information, especially when you don’t have the means to set up a direct mobile link between you and the audience
13. Find Prospects. Twitter can be used as a means to find potential customers or clients online. Do a search for keywords related to your product on Terraminds and then follow users. Tweet about topics parallel to your product and close prospects away from public channels by using direct messages or offline communications. Discretion and skill is needed in this area.
14. Provide Live coverage. Twitter’s message size limit prevents detailed coverage of events but it can allow you to provide real-time commentary which may help to spark further discussion or interest on the event as other Twitter users spread the message. Very useful for citizen journalism.
15. Time Management and Analysis. Twitter can simply be used to keep a detailed record of what you are doing every daily. This might be boring for others but this type of usage is useful when you want to analyze how you spend and manage your time.
16. Set Up Meetings. Twitter can help you organize impromptu meetups. For example, you can twitter a message while at a cafe, event or art gallery and arrange to meet fellow users at a specific spot. It’s an informal and casual way of arranging a meeting.
17. Acquire Votes. Send a link to your stories you’ve submitted in other social news sites like Digg. Sometimes your followers will vote up the stories because they agree with it. This allows you to acquire more support for your efforts on other social media websites.
Mintz, I still haven't seen you on. What's your account name?

hmm....sounds compelling, rap. I think I'll give it a spin.

It gets better with more people.
Right now, I know what EA, Hubcap, Trigger, and Ron Paul are doing this weekend. Ive signed up to the Hushedcasket twitter so I'll get a text when someone wants to play COD4.
Even if you don't have the text messaging set up, I still like the idea.

It's http://twitter.com/mintz
Unfortunately, I probably won't get into it because of freakin' T-Mobile.

I do 99% of twittering online anyways. typing that stuff is a pain on my text cell phone, so I don't bother.

"Oculus is just this guy, you know?"
txting on my cell doesn't bother me, that's why I have unlimited. It's the lack of getting other people's updates on my cell that bothers me more.
FYI: You can turn SMS notifications on or off for each account. You can do a few other things per individual and with SMS notifications. I only get SMS updates from a few of the people I follow.
Also, the idea is that somewhere on this website we'll have a place for someone to type a message like: "we're playing CoD4 in 2 hours (8PM CST)". Then, the twitter.com/hushedcasket account will get updated with this message. If you've added the THX Twitter account to your profile and you're following that profile with SMS messaging, you'll get a TXT notification.
This will work well for THX outings and other THX events.
I just got a new contract with Verizon (with my same phone number). Twitter works now!
Mintz: you may qualify for an .edu discount since you work part-time for an .edu. I think Verizon doesn't care if you are full or part time.
After doing some research, I don't qualify for an educational discount. :(
I'm really liking Twitter with my cell phone. It's almost like having a thread on THX that you're always aware of.
Check out http://www.twitxr.com It's like Twitter, but with photos. And you can set it up to automatically update your Twitter feed!
Check out my account: http://www.twitxr.com/mintz
FYI: It's pronounced "twitcher"
Twitxr seems cool.
But, I can do the same thing with Facebook Mobile. I can take pics on my phone and upload them to Facebook and they'll be in a special "mobile photos" page/feed.
If I wanted them to appear in Twitter, I could then setup Twitterfeed to show them in Twitter.
The future web is going to be about API's and data portability so I want my digital presence at least in the same place right now or in a place that will allow data portability. Twitxr's very cool but right now I can't afford yet another social networking site.
BTW: I did some researching and it appears Facebook offers almost all the same features as Twitter (notifications, following per friend, replies, etc.). However, their API isn't as open so getting updates (like we do with the @live feature) would be difficult with Facebook. Really impressed with Facebook Mobile application, though.
I would love to upload pics to Facebook via my phone, but it doesn't send me a confirmation txt to verify my phone.
I figured out what the problem was with my phone and Facebook: I never updated my phone carrier to Verizon! So, I changed my phone carrier to Verizon, and it returned, "Sorry, your mobile carrier does not support Facebook Mobile verification at this time." So, with T-Mobile I couldn't Twitter, and with Verizon I can't Facebook. Don't you love technology?
I have Verizon and I've gotten the confirmation txt.
I'm guessing Verizon threw up a red flag on Facebook's service recently, then. Pretty annoying.
My "Facebook-mobile" has worked since i started my facebook, very handy w/ getting my pics uploaded. I also have Verizon
I reverified last night to test. It still worked.
I just tried to verify my phone number again here at work, and still no dice. I didn't miss it before, but I'm still disappointed.
I've also attempted to get my cell phone verified in Facebook, with no luck. I'm with AT&T. That was months ago, though. So I'll try again, and see if the result changes.
