Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.
Jan 5, 2008 We'll be having some real life FPS / objective gametypes on a large map with fields/trees/forest, radios, camouflage and a lot of acres. The terrain is 45 minutes West of Huntsville and it's no problem to drive there and back in a single day, though I will be staying the night in a mobile home we've placed there for occasions such as this.
Gametypes are to be determined, but most likely will be objective based capture the flag or stealth/mission gametypes or something of similar style. I plan on giving each team walkie talkies so they can communicate strategy.
If you have paintball equipment, or can loan paintball equipment to other THXers for this event, just let me know.

Laser tag is fun, however imo nothing beats the fear of getting pelted by real life flying projectiles that cause pain.
On a side note, this would be on private property, so no cost is involved in using the space. I'm talking big enough to possibly have to draw a map describing the location of the objectives. And use radios/walkie talkies to communicate between team members/squads.

That sounds like loads of fun. I had a paintball arena within walking distance when I lived in Germany, and I'd volunteer there, so equipment was free for me. Needless to say, I got a lot of paintball time in. I'd be happy to play again, but I would rather rent the equipment, not purchase it.
I think the best idea is to
I think the best idea is to just go to a park and rent equipment. Most places will take pretty good care of you if you go as a group. Plus, they usually referee the games for you as well. There are some great paintball places that offer pretty good deals on group rates around Hunstville! I recommend Missions Paintball... they have some good fields and rent good equipment... they cater to church groups, and I think they would be ideal.
I have equipment, but I haven't used it in a while... in fact, I think I had decided I needed to purchase a new gun last time I played, cause it was giving me problems.
But we seriously need to do this! Paintball is awesome... and I think most of the people here would really enjoy it! Best time to go is in the fall or spring... summer sucks for paintball.

I might be interested. It's been a while since I've been able to get out and play some paintball. I have my own equipment. I prefer playing on private property over parks; it's about 10x more realistic/fun. I always just end up disappointed when I go to a park.
It would need to be a fair amount of people attending and plenty of notice for me to be able to make the drive over though.

Gnome, I don't like
Gnome, I don't like paintball parks for the same reason that I have had more fun and a better time when I didn't have the rules of a park to go by. I also enjoy more realistic terrain and freedom to do what you want. You might also find that you can get just as good of equipment on ebay for not much more than the cost of rental.
I'll say tentatively the first Saturday in January (Jan 5, 2008) is a good target. We'd need a minimum of 10 people total which shouldn't be a problem. That way if someone can't make it we still have at least 4 per team.
I'll go ahead and say we won't do it unless 10 people commit and have access to paintball equipment. The terrain is about 45 minutes west of Huntsville so it's easy to drive there and back all in one day, though I will probably we staying the night there in a mobile home we put out there for reasons like this. It shouldn't be a problem for anyone else to stay the night there as well if you contact me before hand.
If everyone wants to see if there's interest before committing any money towards their equipment (I know I do) then don't start buying anything until I've confirmed that there's 10 commits.

Prices and quality vary
Prices and quality vary greatly. I found a decent paintball gun at Wal-Mart, but you might even find a better deal on ebay. I could create a whole forum talking about the intricacies of paintball velocity for each gun vs the price, but I don't think it'll help much. I'd just buy something, and see if it works fine and shoots fairly straight and fast. If that works for you then you should be fine. Here's what is absolute bare minimum:
FaceMask (a requirement)
Paintball Gun (semi automatic preferred)
Co2 Tank
Feed Hopper
Also bring something to clean out your barrel when your in the field. This can make or break a game if a paintball bursts in your barrel.
There's multiple places in town that will fill your CO2 tank for a minimal price.

I have always bought my gear
I have always bought my gear at paintballgear.com. However, I bought my gun back in '99, and that was before I got into ebay.
I suggest those that are looking to buy a gun look at Kingmann Spyders. Most of Spyder guns are low to midrange in price. I am looking to buy a Spyder Xtra... not too pricey, quality brand, semi-auto gun. I bet I could find it for around $60-$80 on ebay. I have to buy a Spyder, because I have an 18 inch barrel that I had put on my previous gun, and it only fits certain brands of guns... Spyder happens to be one of them.
Protective Gear
Invest in a good mask! That can make or break your paintball experience! If you have a crappy mask, its gonna suck. Fogging, discomfort, breaking... or simply a blurred visor can screw your game big time. It is definitely worth paying the extra money for a good mask. I have a Dye Invision mask, it was pricey when I bought it, but I love it! It is super comfy and never fogs! You can get one now for about $30.
Gloves are important, a shot to the fingers can be the most painful spot to get hit on your body. It is not fun to have swollen, freezing fingers. Get a peir of protective gloves... preferably close-fingered.
As far as clothing goes, I suggest wearing what is comfortable. Do yourself a favor and don't worry about the pain. Depending on how cold it is, wear long sleeves, and some heavy duty pants... like jeans or camo (if you must). In the summer, I wear jeans and a short sleeved shirt... that is all you need. Let me stress, wear what is comfortable! Do not wear ten layers of clothes with a jacket on top to buffer the impact of the balls! It isn't worth it, in fact I think you do yourself a disservice by doing so. Here is why... if you wear a lot of clothing, first of all, your movement is going to be restricted. Secondly, you are going to get hot... I don't care how cold it is, when you start running, which any player worth their salt will, you are going to start burning up! Now, the good thing about wearing lots of clothes is also a bad thing... you won't feel the pain! I say this is a bad thing... why? Well, because one, if you don't feel it you won't know when you are hit, and with no referees that is important. Two, if you are dishonest you are going to be more reluctant to admit your outage. Three, if you can't feel the pain, you are not going to play as carefully, or realistically. I have played with kids that wear sweatshirts and sweatpants over their regular clothes... in the summer, and I wonder, "How long will it take them to pass out from heat exhaustion?"
For the guys, you can wear a cup if you want, but I don't because I have never been hit there, and I think the odds are pretty slim. The discomfort of wearing one is not worth it, I don't think. Your choice.
Paint
You will want to have about 2000 rounds to play. People vary in how much they shoot, but if you are planning on playing all day, then you are going to go through about that much. I find that shoot about 100 - 150 rounds during a woods ball game. If we were playing speed ball, I might go through 200 - 250 a game. It is a good idea to always be aware of how much paint you have, if you get too trigger happy, your experience can be either very short, or even more expensive. Just find an inexpensive case, and buy it.
Co2
I suggest you have two 22oz tanks or one 20oz tank with a very small backup... the second just in case. It is very important to have sufficient gas... I think it is wise to always have more than you think you will need. With paint, you can always borrow some balls from someone who has extra... with gas, you can't really do that. Bring a little more than you think you will need.
Sustenance
Bring lots of water. I don't suggest a camelbak, they are just a pain to haul around and they could easily burst if you fall on them on something sharp. In the summer, maybe, but you most likely will be fine when it is chilly.
Bring snacks like energy bars, trail mix, the usual stuff.
Other thoughts
BTW, lets try to keep people with automatic guns out of this. I think autos are the dumbest thing ever. It totally ruins the game for those that have semis or, God forbid, pump action guns... and it just sucks. No autos, please! I remember one time, hubcap, shyzza, Rho, and I were playing with some friends at a paintball course. We got together with some friends and played against two, TWO, guys with autos. It was about 10 on 2, and they wiped the floor with us... the game was over within a few minutes. It was sick... and not fun.
Don't by a pump-action gun.
Stay way from JT, and Brass Eagle... anything.
Thats all I can think of for now, I don't claim to be a professional or avid paintballer, but I have played my fair share of games over the years... and this stuff is common sense.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Disavowed... I mention cups in my post there. I think it is your choice. I don't wear one, because I have never been shot there, and I think the odds are so slim that it is not worth the discomfort.

I think mine is a Brass Eagle, but it's an anodized aluminum one that seems to work quite well. I've seen some crappy Brass Eagles as well though so I'd take Slayer's advice to probably stay away from them.
The paintballs themselves vary greatly in quality. I don't know the ratings on them, but it's something to think about. The cheaper quality, the more likely they are to break in your barrel. Though this is less of an issue in cold weather (which it should be).

oh yea, he's right about the gloves. When aiming for the largest body mass, it usually ends up being in line with the fingers... ouch. That's the only pain I'm worried about really. I could care less about getting hit in the body or arms.
Though it is embarrassing to have a welp on your forehead if your mask doesn't cover this area.

Slayer is dead-on: Spyder's
Slayer is dead-on: Spyder's are great markers (markers = paintball guns). However, if you want to go cheaper, I'd recommend a Tippmann 98C. That's what I used to use, and it's served me very well. That Wikipedia page also lists the price as "$130 USD or close to $170 USD if bought in a "power pack"(includes everything except paintballs and a full CO2 canister)." That looks like a pretty good deal.
If you want to be the hit of the party, get an Angel. Any kind.
The Tippman 98 custom looks
The Tippman 98 custom looks like a great gun. I would look also at the 98 custom pro for a few reasons. 1, it has a double trigger. For paintball, these are great for fast semiauto firing. 2, it has a repositioned air tank connector. 3, it has an electronic trigger. 4, it's only 20 bucks more or so.

I use a Spyder Xtra that I
I use a Spyder Xtra that I bought shortly after they were released. I did a lot of research to find out what was the best gun I could get without spending a ridiculous amount of money. It's a very good marker for the price. Most people compare it to markers 2-3 times its cost. With stock equipment it has lots of features found in top quality markers, very low bullet spread, reasonable bullet speed, good weight distribution, and very low incidence of ball break (I've only had it happen once, with very cheap ammo). It's also rediculously upgradable. Many high level competitors slap a few upgrades on this marker and use it as their main gun, competing against pros whose sponsors paid for an angel.
One of those features it has is a mini x-chamber which helps a lot when using liquid CO2 during the winter. It makes sure the CO2 doesn't freeze, which is a huge problem with CO2 in cold weather.
The shortcomings for this marker with stock equipment are only really exhibited in speedball:non-automatic, too large to be constantly diving and rolling with, etc.
For woodsball, this is a great marker without having to buy any upgrades.

Any of you woodsball strategy experts please chime in. It may be overkill with the radios, but it may work. I'm not sure. Considering the range on these paintball markers, I'm not sure we'd be getting too far from each other, but it's possible.

I have two FRS/GMRS radios for sure. I may have four. I suggest we have a gentleman's agreement on eavesdropping, because I could use a $20 Wal-Mart scanner and scan every FRS/GMRS freq in about a second for enemy comms.
Will we be allowed to entrench our defensive positions?
Some friends of mine used to
Some friends of mine used to have regular paintball outings at their house on Keel Mountain. It was pretty cool and they even had Co2 to refill your tanks. But anyway, the boundaries up there were pretty big. So radios would have been nice.
If teams split into two groups for strategy purposes, it would be nice to know the status of that group. Furthermore, it would be great to be able to radio the other team "GO" at the start of the game, instead of yelling across a field or using an air horn. Confusion always seems to arise in those situations.
I do not have any radios, but I saw some at Gander Mountain that were on sale for $39.00 and they came with what looked like wireless ear pieces.
Synchronized watches can
Synchronized watches can also alleviate the starting problem.
I went to a pbreview.com
I went to a pbreview.com chat room yesterday to discuss paintball guns. I asked about Spyders and what a guy in my position should buy. They said that the Spyder Sonix is exactly the same gun as the Spyder Xtra, except the Xtra has a longer barrel and different name. The Sonix is about $50 cheaper. So you guys who don't have a gun can get that one for about $69.
They also told me that if I wanted to upgrade from my previous gun and still wanted a Spyder then I should buy a Spyder VS1. The VS1 runs about $139, it has an electronic trigger, instead of a mechanical, which I am not sure I like, but they said the gun is better all around. It is more dependable and accurate. So if any of you are thinking of playing more than this one time and perhaps five or six times a year, you might consider this.
Slayer, once I'm set up with
Slayer, once I'm set up with some equipment. I plan on continuing the hobby. I think it'd be a great intense workout to get semi competitive with it. Not professional by any means, but good enough to hold my own.
Most rules will be finalized shortly, but here's a quick indication of the gameplay and basic common sense rules
Safety:
1. When tagged out or not actively engaged in a game, stick a stop in the end of your barrel. It keeps you from shooting out yours, mine, or my wife's eye out when we're standing around talking.
2. Keep your mask on even when tagged out. It's just dumb not to. Trust me, this is a hard rule to remember until you get pegged in the face. Then you'll never forget it.
Gameplay:
1. Gentleman's agreement on the radio evesdropping.
2. Gentleman's agreement on getting tagged out with paint.
3. Entrenched positions are fine. I suppose this would depend on the game type.
4. Camouflage is fine, and encouraged, but not necessity. I will most likely be wearing Realtree pants and a long sleeve shirt or sweater in realtree. I've seen lots of people wearing army surplus camo at paintball arenas
Gametypes:
1. 1 Flag Capture the Flag
2. 2 Flag Capture the Flag
3. Quick rounds of Attrition in a smaller area.

I ended up buying a Spyder VS2. I would have bought the Ion, except I wanted to be able to use my Dye Boomstick barrel, and I would have to buy an adapter for it. Sweet!
I am glad it looks like you guys are planning on doing this more than just once, and perhaps regularly... I would love to play regularly again! I can't wait!
Jeff, you may want to
Jeff, you may want to consider the Smart Parts Ion for yourself. The only reason I did not buy it was because of my barrel issue. Otherwise, I would have been all over it.
Paintballgear.com is featuring the Smart Parts Ion right now for $164.95. From what I have been told, it is an excellent gun. I'm sure you have done your research though.
The research I've done
The research I've done indicates it's a very good marker as well. However, it's just a little above what I want to spend. I need the entire setup: marker, hopper, mask, harness, tank, squeegee, etc. I've found a couple of good ebay sellers that offer the Spyder Pilot with all of the above for about the same as the $165 for the Ion. I also like the electronic features of the Pilot, as I like to tinker with things, and I look forward to pelting you with my choice of 3 or 6-round bursts.

Mike, I just realized that I have a tank of Co2 we could use to fill tanks! It's not very big... but it is probably big enough for 12 people. My sister was given this tank to use for air brush painting years ago, but she never uses it... so we can.
I'm not sure how much is in it... I'll have to get back with you on that part.

I'm def. interested. not sure if i can make it yet
Oculus wats the rules gonna be on getting out? if the areas gonna be as big as it sounds there's gotta be something more than 1 shot outs like usual. A lot of people would be waiting around for a long time once out in that case.
I've played some, and CTF ends up being kill the enemy team first and then get the flag. So it's just like a team deathmatch when you come down to it. A bigger area may change that though. hmmm
BTW I've got a gun and paint if i can go.
Your definitely welcome to
Your definitely welcome to come. So bring your gun and paint! And any brothers or friends that I might know.
I've considered exactly this problem your talking about. I've thought of a couple different scenarios where if your tagged out in ctf matches, it's possible for you to have to go back to some sort of a "base" in order to "respawn" or get back into the game. Then again, this would require a lot of running back and forth.. But then again, the point is to not get hit, so there's got to be some incentive there.
I've been really busy lately so I've not gotten a chance to investigate it further, but be sure that within the next week I'll have everything nailed down.
On this note, I've been pushing to have this thing on private property, but I just recruited another friend and his brother yesterday and he said they do the same thing, but on a place where they have rentable equipment and woodsball courses. This is completely new to me, so we can put it to a vote right now as to whether or not we do something like that at an official course, or keep the plan.
Sorry if this is a little late info, but I just now found out about it as well. Either way, on January 5th, some paint will fly.
----------------------------
"Oculus is just this guy, you know?"
I'll do it either way... if
I'll do it either way... if we do it on private property we may save some money. On th other hand, there are certain benefits to using a course, such as refs.
I tend to think that this group may be more suited for private property, mainly because of the large playing area. Yes, people who get out may have to wait a little, but in my experience, that down time can be a good thing. It gives people time to be able refill paint, change air tanks, cleanup masks, or even fix problems with their gun. Also, I think people enjoy talking about the previous game with fellow losers... I mean players. :) So I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing, especially if all the equipment is far away.
Go ahead and put me down as
Go ahead and put me down as a maybe. I will have to check out my gun and make sure its still in working order. I used to play every saturday for months 2 years ago and I even used a crappy $50 brass eagle from a combo pack at walmart. I am really interested in playing again since its been so long, but depending on if I need to buy a new gun then we shall see.
Ps, getting shot in the neck stings.

You can put me down as a maybe. It will depend on what the funds look like after I get back from Colorado. If I party too much in Breck or Denver, then paintball gear may not fit in the budget. But if it stays pretty mellow, which it more than likely will, then I should be able to get the gear necessary.
I'm gonna bring that Co2
I'm gonna bring that Co2 tank... but I don't have the hose to fill a tank with... if anyone else has one, let me know.
Looking forward to it!

Dick'sSportingGoods is offering a "Buy One, Get the 2nd 50% Off" for a box of 2,000 paintballs.
I want to go to the one by Target sometime within the next day or two to buy a mask anyway, so does someone want to come with me and split the cost of a box + 50%-off-2nd-box? That way we'll both only be paying 75% of a full-price box of paint.
Anyone know how JT brand
Anyone know how JT brand guns are? This one looks pretty nice, and has been marked down pretty low due to I'm guessing a new model.

What did you end up ordering, midnight?
Also, has it been decided where we are going to play yet? And I hope everyones gun is adjusted because I dont want to be getting hit with anything over like 290...that might sting...
There's been a slight change
There's been a slight change in plans and it's looking very likely that we're going to go to a paintball course (woodsball+speedball) in the Athens area. I was talking with a friend and he's recommended a place that's very reasonable in price. I'm going to check it out first hand in two days.
We then won't need a C02 tank as people will be able to fill up with air for free or co2 for a minimal price all day long. This is almost a necessity because some people have guns that can't use C02. It runs around 20 bucks or so for the whole day I believe. Don't quote me on that. I don't know yet if they've got paintballs, but I think you can bring your own as well. I'll let yall know if anything changes, but for now, just count on it being in Athens. I'll post some directions soon.

That is fine by me. If you can, let me know the name of the place. I'd like to see their paint prices, and make sure that their air is free. If it is, then I won't fill my tank until then.

Is it phoenix paintball?
Is it phoenix paintball?
No, it's Mission Paintball
No, it's Mission Paintball about a mile closer towards Madison/Huntsville. You turn left at Jimmy's furniture onto Newby road. If you pass Phoenix paintball, you've gone too far.
It's official, I've just gotten back from Mission paintball. It's $20 for a whole day, plus around 20-40 dollars in paint if you buy it from them. I just spent around 3 hours playing and used up around 1000 paintballs. I'd say 2000 paintballs is plenty for the day (which cost me $40 bucks when I bought it at another store)
Cost:
$20 full day / $12 with Military/Police/Fire ID or a relative's ID
~$30-40 paint
Free Compressed Air, but C02 is probably not free
Max Total with your own Equipment and buy Paint: ~ $60 with compressed Air
Max Total with your own Equipment no Paint: ~ $20 with compressed Air
Directions:
Go West on HWY 72, pass Madison and keep going towards Athens. About 5 minutes before you get to Athens you will pass a small family owned furniture store with wooden chairs outside. Turn left here onto Newby Road. Follow this road for a mile or so and you'll see Mission Paintball on your left.
Be there 10:00-11:00am Central Saturday January 5th
Mission Paintball is very relaxed in what they let you do (bring your own guns/paint or rent from them), and they are very strict on safety, so this place is perfect for what we want. There's only 1 ref usually per game, and it's your duty to call yourself out. Their woods courses are very nice

I appreciate the offer, but it looks like I won't be able to make it this time. I've got some more tournament matches I have to play. If you guys continue to do this on a semi-regular basis, I'm sure I'll be able to make it out there a few times. Have fun!

Alright sweetpea, I re-read all your posts in this thread and the only info about Mission Paintball is the following sentence:
I recommend Missions Paintball... they have some good fields and rent good equipment... they cater to church groups, and I think they would be ideal.
That's hardly
1. A mini-review (that you claim you posted)
2. A link to their site (that Disavowed posted)
3. Detailed info from their site about services available from them (that I posted)

There's also no mention of any other parks by name, except some private property on Keel Mountain.
Lastly, this thread was started 40 days ago, so if you count 1.3333333333333333333333333333333333 months as "months ago" then I suppose that part is accurate.

BTW, got my PB gear today.
BTW, got my PB gear today. I think I need some training. Unfortunately, the manual for the marker is the most poorly written, and it's the most complex piece of gear to figure out. I have inadvertently cocked it and cannot figure out how to release the bolt. I also want to know what the hell is so magical about paintball gun oil that precludes me from using regular gun oil on the internals. I also want to know if the short riser between the marker and hopper is necessary.
The marker barrel has holes cut in a spiral all the way down the barrel. Is there a good reason why I shouldn't wrap the barrel in duct tape to prevent gas from escaping as the ball traverses the barrel, therefore raising velocity?
The adjustable trigger is pretty sweet. Has adjustments for length of trigger pull and a screw to prevent over-travel, which are similar concepts to real firearm triggers I have played with. I adjusted the over-travel to stop it just after it trips the electronic switch, which is pretty intuitive. Is there a good reason I shouldn't adjust it to have a super short length of pull (hair trigger)?
Jeff, do not, I repeat, DO
Jeff, do not, I repeat, DO NOT use WD-40 on your gun. I have known people who have ruined their guns that way.
To uncock your gun... put in the battery, make sure it is charged. Then you can turn on the gun in semi-auto mode... when you fire it should uncock the gun. However, I did the same thing and could not get it to uncock... I thought something was wrong with my gun, but it turned out that the battery was not charged.
If your your gun has some sort of adjustable ring on the loader then you don't necessarily need the elbow.
Hubcap: Feel free to
Hubcap: Feel free to come... Bring your brothers/friends
Jeff: Mine only fires when the battery is in and a paintball is in the chamber. It detects when it's empty so it won't fire.
You will have to keep your velocity under 290-300 fps anyways, so I wouldn't duck tape your gun just yet. I'm sure it's capable of 300+ easily. They have a place to check your velocity when you get there.
See everyone tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to it!
My gun has a mode in which
My gun has a mode in which it won't fire unless a ball is in the chamber, but I can turn it off if I choose. It's nice.
Thanks for the info, guys.
Thanks for the info, guys. I suppose that means there's no harm in dry firing (assuming the marker will let you).
Slayer, thanks for the tip, but I would never use WD-40 to lubricate something. WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant. Somewhere in our past somebody noticed it lubricates things for about 5 minutes before wearing off, and now everybody thinks it's a lubricant. I bet it disintegrated the rubber seals in your friend's gun, since WD-40 is a petroleum based lubricant and I think rubber is petroleum based as well.
I'm talking about real lubricating oil when I ask. Does the gun need to be cleaned and lubed before first use?

Jeff, I was told that some
Jeff, I was told that some guns are already oiled and ready to go out of the package, however, some are not. I was told that you should go ahead and oil your Pilot because it is one of those that is not. Frankly, I don't know how one would know which guns are and are not oiled out of the box... and the decision seems somewhat arbitrary. However, I think even if your gun is oiled, it would not hurt anything to oil it again. I don't see any reason why it would hurt the gun to over oil it. So I would suggest that you go ahead and oil it prior to use.
Also, I don't think there is any harm in dry firing electronic markers, especially when they are not cocked. I have seen people do it a lot. Its going to run down the battery, but other than that I think its fine. Shouldn't hurt anything.
Thanks for the tips.

Nope, no headcount to stay
Nope, no headcount to stay under. We'll be there around 10:00am tomorrow. Glad you can make it.
Jeff, as far as the trigger goes, making your trigger with a short length of pull (hair trigger) would work fine. I use semi-auto mode and can pull that thing pretty damn quick, it's as good as an automatic. Since mines got an electronic trigger, there's very little trigger pull.
Can't wait! I'm especially looking forward to the large games of attack/defend in the woods. It's going to be a fun day. It already seems like it's been too long since I've been there last, and it's only been one week.
Don't forget to bring cash. This place is small and I don't think they've got a machine.
