Sony's PS3 Strategy

This is not a Sony-bashing thread per se. However, after the recent article at Joystiq about the rumor of a 40 GB PS3 I am left wondering: "What is Sony's PS3 strategy?"

Weren't they the ones who accused MS of having a confusing Xbox 360 SKU lineup because not all 360s come with a hard drive? Furthermore, many of their changes in PS3 SKUs have been hush-hush. I only remember the announcement of the 80 GB PS3 getting a Sony press release. I certainly could be wrong on that. Here's my recollection of the PS3 SKU history

1. 20 GB and 60 GB available
2. 20 GB discontinued
3. 80 GB announced
4. 60 GB price drop
5. 60 GB price drop is just a "clearance sale"
6. Rumor of 40 GB PS3 announcement today to steal the news from H3 (good luck)

This is a legitimate question: Can anybody explain their strategy to me? I really am not looking to make fun of them. I just want to understand.
