The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.

I'm excited about this peripheral. It should aid in setting up games and speed up communication between people that may be trying to get into games with one another. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to send a quick message on the 360 but decided not to because of the effort required. I'm hoping more THX'ers purchase this accessory as well.
It will cost $29.99 and comes with the chat pad attachment and a headset. Little known fact: Gamespot reports that you will also be able to connect your old original Xboxen headsets to the chatpad, so bust out that old Halo 2 in-ear set if you like.
How it works: You will be able to type messages faster through the standard "send message" Xbox Live blade, however an additional button on the chat pad will pop up a quick chat interface over whatever current game your playing. It is yet to be determined whether or not you will be able to hit the quick chat button and send a standard Xbox Live message to one of your friends. If you don't have the accessory it is most likely that you will be able to receive chat messages if your MSN account is synced, however you will have to reply through the standard blade. I would recommend everyone go and get an MSN Messenger account and sync it to your Xbox Live account. This is an easy process and there's plenty of tutorials online.
This is a huge improvement to the 360's current messaging and communication functionality. For only 30 bucks, I'd say it's well worth it.
Here's the official info from Xbox.com:
"Chatting with friends and family on Xbox LIVE® and Windows-based PCs is easy using the Xbox 360 Messenger Kit. This device easily connects to any Xbox 360 controller and provides easy to use chat capabilities while maintaining gameplay functionality in one easy-to-hold device. The Messenger Kit includes a Chatpad and Xbox 360 Headset."

Yay?
I still think the traditional keyboard would be better for text messaging, but I suppose this is a nifty device. Also, it comes with its own headset, so that's a plus.
While cool, I have no use
While cool, I have no use for it. If I want to send someone a bunch of text, I just walk the two steps to my computer and send it from Xbox.com
I send most of my msgs
I send most of my msgs through the PC at XBOX.com so this is an accessory that I'm going to hold off on. I want one, but I think I want my $30 more.
Hopefully we'll see kb/m support in games next year. SONY and Nintendo plan on doing it.
I really want one of these.
I really want one of these. It is too much of a hassle to switch my monitor to PC, then go to xbox.com, and then send a message. I think one of these pads would make things a lot easier.
I really like using messages
I really like using messages to set up games (and talk a little smack), and my laptop does a good job using the xbox.com interface, but it does get clunky. I'm unsure if I'll buy this or not. I'll take a look at how it's being used once released and make a decision from there.
lol, PC input devices
But I could be wrong. Still, I think if you want to play with a mouse and keyboard, stick to the PC.
But SONY and Nintendo are
But SONY and Nintendo are going to allow gamers to play with kb/m on their systems. UT3 is going to have it on PS3. I would think that Microsoft would see this as pressure and eventually allow it in their games.
Surely it would be a peripheral cash cow. XBOX-branded keyboards and mice could look really cool. Add some special XBOX buttons for the different blades. Add some Media Center buttons. Pretty soon, you've got a really powerful input device.
It would work out perfect for me. I'm rarely going to game on big screen TVs. I'm going to play from desks. A kb/m would work great for me.
That would be a cool
That would be a cool peripheral. In addition to the features you mentioned I'd like it if it let me hotkey sending a message to certain people or a list of people.
No question about it:
No question about it: the keyboard is the ultimate in input devices. This peripheral will fill part of the void, at least until they come out with a wireless keyboard.
OMGWTFBBQ??
I'm not doubting the peripheal cash cow, rapture, but perhaps I'm just a tradionalist who finds it absurd to have a console use a keyboard and mouse in-game.
What if the Xbox 360 isn't designed to handle the mouse and keyboard in the first place? I've said this before, I don't think it's so much an issue that developers wouldn't put in mouse and keyboard support so much as they can't.
I think you just said that
I think you just said that in the case that it is technically impossible to have a keyboard and mouse working with a 360 title that Microsoft isn't smart enough to get it working in the future. Hogwash. MS can get it working. It's just an input device.
I have it on good authority that there are political, not technical, reasons that kb/m aren't working on XBOX 360 games right now.
Update. The chat pad hits
Update. The chat pad hits next week on the 4th.
Released next week on the 4th:
Chatpad
H3 controllers
H3 wireless headset
I got the chatpad today. I
I got the chatpad today. I really like it. I will probably be more likely to answer messages now and it will be great in the future for entering codes like the one for COD4 and such. I traded 4 old games in and it only cost me an additional $8+ out of pocket.
The controller still fits nicely in my hand and I like that the 360 makes a noise with each keystroke so you don't have to look up at the screen while you are typing.
BTW at EBGames you get an additional 30% on trade-ins if you use them towards a Halo 3 pre-order.
I’ll send you my info,
I'll send you my info, Katie will want to as well.
It does make it tons easier to communicate. I've found that people don't like sending voice messages, but they will send text messages all day.
