Bioshock Demo Available on XBL

Submitted by Midnight on Sun, 08/12/2007 - 9:34pm.

It's about 15 minutes old and weighs a hefty 1.35 GB, and you can get your copy for free on XBL. The Bioshock television trailer is also available from gametrailers. The SD version is below and the HD version is available for download here. Additionally, Major Nelson interviews Ken Levine of Irrational Games about Bioshock and the demo in his latest podcast. What a pleasant Sunday evening surprise.

Same for me. Had to finally turn on background downloading and go to sleep. Will play it tonight.

Looking forward to the reviews you guys are going to write about this game.

I have been downloading for about 25mins... still at 1%. It's not worth it. :)

Just turn on background

Just turn on background downloading and come back in a few hours.

First impressions: GoW quality graphics. Yes, I said it, and I think it's true. Story is gripping and really makes you want to press forward to figure out the plot. Plasmids are really cool, and despite all the combinations of plasmids/weapons available, the control scheme is simplistic and beautiful.

You can interact with the world in countless ways. I'm really impressed. Looking forward to finishing the demo. Screencaps below.

Just Finished the Demo, and...

No words... just emotions.

I. WILL. BUY. THIS. GAME.

I liked how

I liked how I thought I was in a pre-animated cut-scene, but realized it was realtime rendered water and fire effects: very nice looking.

When I left for work this

When I left for work this morning, I started the download again. Hopefully, it will be done by tonight... but I have my doubts. That file is ridiculously large for a demo.

Same here. I sat there with my controller on the couch until it told me to move with the left thumbstick. I thought, "No, way! This is gameplay!?!"

Bioshock demo on hard difficulty level

From the Xbox 360 Dashboard, head into your Gamer Profile and select the Game Defaults option. Once in there, click on General and change the Difficulty option to "Hard." When you load up the BioShock demo, the previously unreachable Hard difficulty option will now be highlighted. If you accidentally hit the analog stick and move away from the Hard option (thus making it unreachable again), you can hit the B button to back out and give it another shot.

It's pretty fun, but I found the demo GP a bit repetitive.

My quick impressions after

My quick impressions after playing the demo. I'll stick to the cons since everyone else gushed about the game.

The gameplay was very linear a possible causality of the indoor environment. I guess this could be different in the full game.

The story was weak, which is basically a tenet of video game design. Everything that has taken place in the game so far makes little to no sense at all. If you are going to try to tell a story in a game, tell a story that makes sense, at least in GoW they had the right sense to not even try.

It is worth a play. I'll be renting it, since it doesn't have any lasting appeal. By the way, who would randomly inject themselves with a needle with red crap in it?

I don't know, but all those drug addicts out there make you think, don't they?

After playing the Bioshock

After playing the Bioshock demo, I've determined that I'm not going to buy the game. The demo seemed very linear. I don't like the control scheme. Even if I bought the game, I would probably only want to play through it one time. I'm not even sure how a MP version of this game would work.

I could probably say the same thing about Resident Evil, but for some reason I don't think this game is going to come anywhere close to Resident Evil.

I was impressed with the styling and story. The music. The art. The theme. For what it is, it's pretty good.

I can say that for the hype that this game is getting, I was a little let down.

Bioshock linearity

I've always thought linearity was a good thing. There's lots of first person shooters that are more of a maze/puzzle than a shooter, that always bored me. Maybe if things are too linear then it becomes boring as well.

I still haven't made up my mind as to whether or not I'm buying it. I suppose I will know on release day.

It sorta reminds me of an adventure game, which is a good thing. We need more of those.

My impression from Major

My impression from Major Nelson's interview with the developer is that they funneled you into several important aspects of the game quickly in order to give you a taste of important features (2 plasmids, 3 weapons, security cameras, hacking security drones). I think the opposite side of the coin would be "WTF. This is a demo and I have no idea what to do or where to go. How am I supposed to try out the game with no structure?"

The many ways to interact with the environment provided a lot of enjoyment for me. Listening to the recorded messages and looking around rooms gave a pretty neat glimpse of what Rapture used to be.

I do not enjoy linearity either, but I see the necessity of it in the demo.

Eh, not my cup of tea. Cool concept... but I didn't really like it that much.

Huntsville Toys R Us isn’t

Huntsville Toys R Us isn't one of the uninformed few selling Bioshock early by mistake. Damn. I think they might have been getting hammered with requests for it because the CSR told me without hesitation that it would be released next week.

Its Xray

You touched on one of the points that I really liked about the demo: you get a glimpse of what Rapture used to be. I love the atmosphere that it gives you, and the recordings help enhance that.
