Quake 3 Arena coming to XBOX Live Arcade. Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3 supports keyboard and mouse.

Quake III Arena box arts

Great news for Quake III fans (and perhaps keyboard and mouse fans). Coming out out of QuakeCon, iD made the announcement that Quake III Arena is headed to XBOX Live Arcade. Quake III Arena is considered one of the greatest first person shooters of all time. It's very fun. It's very competitive. It will be a huge hit on XBOX Live - at least, I hope it is. For (an assumed) $10, this is going to be a heck of a game. However, I have a feeling that FPS fans are going to be busy with another game.

Unreal Tournament 3

In other news, Epic announced that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 will support keyboard and mice as NATIVE input devices. Excellent! However, Microsoft does not currently allow keyboard and mice to be used as NATIVE input devices. Shucks! Imagine if other XBOX games supported keyboards and mice. HALO 2 or 3. Command and Conquer. HALO Wars. Surely console RTS fans would welcome kb/m. FPS fans would as well. PC gamers would be more open to the platform.

Is SONY going to capture some of the PC gaming audience with this move? Will Microsoft simply not make a move and stand firm on their policy of "no keyboards and mice" on their consoles?

I for one want to see new XBOX 360 titles supporting keyboards and mice. Surely it wouldn't require much investment from the development house to get this up and running - especially considering the additional sales that such a setup would generate (not to mentioned the ridiculously over-priced keyboard and mice accessories that could be sold).

The PC versus controller debate just got a little more interesting.

Q3 Arena

For $10 this is a no brainer. I might play Q3 Arena more than I did Halo 2. Looking forward to getting everyone together in online matches and swearing at FoulBreed and his damned rail gun. This will be fun. No doubt.

Dead, Garrett!

I didn’t play a lot of

I didn't play a lot of games in college. But, I probably played Quake III Arena more than any other game. I'm guessing I played 20 hours a month or so. That's where I learned by leet Capture the Flag skills.

rapture can capture

I remember LANning this game with my uncle back in Germany when it first came out. He was too good, and beer didn't detriment his skills at all.

Quake III FTW!

Don't take me too seriously here.

Well, what the Hell?

Did you really not know this already..?

Hey, I have an even better idea; let's just play games on the PC and ditch the Xbox completely. If Xbox games supported keyboards and mice (which they probably won't considering the fact that the Xbox 360 does not support said input devices), it would be essentially playing on a PC, you see? Except without all the advantages, flexibility and performance of them.

Also, I have a feeling that quite a bunch of people playing on the Xbox wouldn't appreciate the accuracy, precision, and the response time of a mouse and keyboard. Just a hunch. I've seen plenty of people who prefer to play on consoles over PCs because they don't have to look down at what "buttons" they're pressing when they play.

It's Sony. It's the PS3. It's a console. I don't want to seem opinionated, and I'm not speaking for every one, but I don't think that many PC gamers would give a crap about the PS3.

And... what's going to happen if they don't?

Aside from the technical issues such as the fact that the Xbox 360 doesn't support the mouse and keyboard to begin with. It's not so much of an issue of whether or not the developers or Microsoft won't create mouse and keyboard support so much as the fact that the Xbox 360 itself wasn't designed to use them. At least, that's what I think. I'm trying to remember where I got this source.

You can already use a USB

You can already use a USB keyboard on the 360 to type options on the Dashboard menus.

IF and only IF I can use the

IF and only IF I can use the keyboard and mouse for Q3A on the 360 will I get it. Otherwise it's kinda worthless if you can't bunny hop. Add that to the fact that I can't switch to a specific weapon as fast on a controller as I can on a keyboard, and it's not worth it to me to spend the money on a game I've already got an ingrained set of reflexes and motions for.

Q3 + mouse and keyboard = win.

Aside from that, not much else.

I'm afraid that's ten dollars that you're not going to spend on, then. You're better off playing it on the PC, man. Shooters are just better played with a mouse and keyboard.

Ridiculous

Every time anyone mentions "keyboard and mouse" in any context whatsoever the topic derails and goes to hell in a handbasket. You guys with such a chip on your shoulder about kb+m vs controllers have issues, and I mean that seriously, not sarcastically.

I'll miss you while I'm playing Q3 Arena wtih whatever input device it'll allow me to play with.

Yeah, I know I'm retarded...

Hence, that's why I said, "Don't take me too seriously here." I know I'm an arrogant, opinionated bastard.

But I might buy Q3A; I prefer the mouse and keyboard, but I'm not some "purist" here. I just don't think the experience will be the same.

Sweet

Quake 3 and U.T. got me into FPS' and online gaming all at once. This is awesome! Was'nt very good, but it's just a fun, easy game to play.

On the other hand, there are plenty of topics on this forum that went to hell in a handbasket and have not contained the words "keyboard and mouse".

+1

I’m not a kb/m purist. I

I'm not a kb/m purist. I just learned to play Q3 with a keyboard and mouse, and converting to a controller, with it's inherent inaccuracies compared to the kb/m, I'd just end up getting frustrated :(. I have more fun playing halo with a controller than I did with a kb/m, even though the CAL Assault gametype was one of the best ever invented. I'm all for Q3 showing up on the 360, I just won't be playing, primarily because I don't have money for a luxury item like that, but partly because it wouldn't feel right to me.

I swing both ways… I mean

I swing both ways... I mean when it comes to PC and Console gaming. :)

I hold no ill will towards either. I don't have to complain about which is "better", cause I can kick butt on both and don't have to demean people that prefer one over the other. :) j/k

Na, but seriously, I don't know why people have burs up their rear-end about this "PC pwns consoles" business. I like PCs, but I like the simplicity of consoles as well. I think it is a completely trivial argument. Like preferring M&Ms to Hershey's Kissables.

Actually, I really like to compare it to the people who go around critiquing grammar and spelling, like it is a crime to make a mistake now and then... and to make light of those who committed the atrocity. I am talking about the people who seem to seek these errors out. That may not be a completely fair comparison, but in my mind it is very similar, and just as moronic. I think it is a similar "chip" that people carry around. I could be wrong though.

Me too. I try not to show disdain just as long as others do the same.

What the PC make lack up in "simplicity" more than makes up with its capabilities, dude. For example, a PC can run Elder Scrolls 4 with better visuals and performance than the console versions, and it has a strong online community that has created countless number of mods and user-created content to improve and enhance the experience, which the console versions lack.

Anyways, if PCs aren't simplistic, they're at least not too difficult to handle once you become familiar with them. It's not that trivial.

Dude, I'm one of the biggest grammar Nazis around, but I'm not going to rip someone over for making a simple mistake when their English is otherwise perfect.
