Shameless Request for Labor

Submitted by Midnight on Tue, 07/03/2007 - 4:17pm.

On Saturday July 14th I will be moving my mother-in-law from her 2-bedroom apartment near University to her new house near Meridian St and Winchester. She is renting a U-Haul for the endeavor and doesn't have very much to move (two computer desks, bedroom set, living room set, dining room table, and some packed boxes. I will be leading the endeavor and need other able-bodied men to assist. With three other guys I estimate it will take about four hours from start to finish.

If anyone is interested in volunteering then lunch and refreshments will be provided. Adult beverages/TV/hanging out will also be available at my house after the event. I plan to meet at 7:30 and start about 8 AM.

Don't feel obligated if you're just not interested. I don't usually like working on Saturday morning either. If you are interested in helping either reply to this thread or email me at jeffbarnett513 (at symbol goes here) gmail.com

I see you chose

I see you chose to unleash the moving armies of THX on this poor unsuspecting woman. I'll see if I'm going to be in town and let you know.

Slayer's picture

I can help out. I've been

I can help out. I've been doing a lot of moving lately, so this would be almost like a regular weekend activity. :)

Moving

Thanks for showing interest, guys.

The tentative schedule is to meet in the back of the Barnhill's Grill parking lot (corner of Julia St and University) at 0730. Will guide everyone to the apartment from there. Looks like two people for sure and another two tentatively. We should get things done in a snap with 4-5 people (plus two small, frail women...but do they really count?)

Midnight's picture

Moving Rescheduled

Closing did not happen as quickly as expected and the moving date is now tentatively 21 July. Is everyone interested available for that Saturday as well?

Slayer's picture

I think that is fine for me.

I think that is fine for me. I will let you know if there is a conflict.

Re: labor

I may be able to make that date. It won't do any good if I still can't put significant weight on my left foot. Things are healing up pretty well right now. I'll let you know towards the middle of next week.

moving vs. in-laws???

I probably couldn't have helped out this weekend, since my wife's parents are in town visiting (I'd actually prefer moving rather than being stuck at home with the in-laws, but my wife probly wouldn't go for that), but next Sat. shouldn't be a problem. I'll let you know for sure sometime next week.

Works for me.

Thanks, guys. Look forward to hearing from you later in the week. My mother-in-law apologizes for the scheduling headaches.

Woke up this morning

Woke up this morning, checked this thread to make sure this was still the moving date.. Looks like it's changed to the 21st. I should be there, and if not I'll repost otherwise.

Midnight's picture

Yow

I'm glad you checked! Sorry I didn't contact you in person earlier.

Oculus's picture

move

No apology necessary since I hadn't confirmed anyways.

I'm Weird

I read this message, and it immediately played out in my head in the form of a blues song...

"Woke up this morning"
(da duh da dah)
"And checked this thread"
(da duh da dah)
"Just to see if it was still moving day"
(da duh da dah)
"but it was changed to the 21st instead!"
(Some cool cat goes nuts wailing on with a harmonica.

Blues

Brick, one of my first thoughts was the horrible car dealership commercial that's on 95.1 23 times per day and is set to a blues song

..they wouldn't loan me one red cent
said you sat down on your checkbook
got behind on your payments...heidi ho

WTF is heidi ho?

Slayer's picture

I hate that commercial!

I hate that commercial!

Midnight's picture

Car dealerships

It seems that car dealerships now focus less on advertising the quality of their cars, service, etc, and focus almost solely on their willingness to sell financing to anyone with a pulse.

Slayer's picture

I don’t know if it is

I don't know if it is Huntsville, or just local commercials in general, but you can almost guarantee that if it is local commercial in Huntsville it is going to be really cheesy... and embarrassing. I feel like Huntsville is worse than most places, but then again, I don't have much experience with local commercials outside of Huntsville.

When I think of local TV commercials, I think of RCFU, Wiley's, Serra Toyota, Tony Reppucci and lots of other annoying ads.

Mintz's picture

It’s funny you say that,

It's funny you say that, because I read it with the Sopranos theme song in my head.

"Woke up this morning, got yourself a gun..."

Midnight's picture

Commercials

San Diego area commercials are just as cheesy, just without the accent.

"Spit out your fluffin vowels already, freak!"

What's really sad is that some marketing executive somewhere has probably done trade studies and tested different types of commercials and found that the "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" style commercials work. If it wasn't true then someone would do commercials differently, but since they're all the same I assume there's a reason.

Cheesy commercials

I used to work for a guy who owned a string of Arby's localy before corporate RTM bought them all back. One day he called me into his office to watch a new commercial. Then he asked what I thought.

I told him that I thought it was kind of cheesy and a little annoying.

He replied "Good, if it doesn't catch anyone's attention then it doesn't get the job done."

Also, there are a lot of suckers out there who buy a car based on a monthly payment rather than total cost of ownership.

Midnight's picture

Hmm...

So, to semi-relate our tangent to the OP, my best bet to recruit movers for Saturday would have been to go around hitting people across the face with a 2x4 and then ask for help. I would certainly have had their attention.

Mintz's picture

In a recent poll, nearly 100

In a recent poll, nearly 100 percent of those interviewed do not like being hit in the face with a pole.

I don't think a 2x4 would be much different.

The more you know...

Bright out tonight?

I think a better analogy would be if you were to first get our attention by mooning us.

The results of your white bread and water recipe certainly used to garner you a lot of attention at LANs.

Midnight's picture

Good Point

Much better analogy.

No can do this weekend

I was informed last night that a set of grandparents that hasn't seen Speck yet is coming into town Friday night, and that my brother is having a birthday party for one of his kids at his house Saturday.

I'm suddenly unavailable. I'm sorry.

Midnight's picture

No problem. Hope to see you at the LAN.

back to the topic...

I won't be able to make it this Saturday after all. As it turns out, I'll be in Birmingham this weekend visiting my sister. Hope the move goes well!

Moving

Everything is locked on for this weekend. However, I can't pick up the truck until 10 AM, so we'll get a later start than I planned. I thought to make good use of time we could meet about 8 AM for breakfast, possibly at the Shoney's at University and the Parkway, and then proceed to the apt (about 2 miles away) about 9 AM. From there we'll get a plan together and start moving things down the stairs into the grassy knoll below, being careful to watch for snipers. At 10 AM I'll pick up the truck (about 2 miles away) and return. Loading should go very quickly from there. We have 5 people helping so far that I know of

Moving a 1.5 bedroom apt into a 1400 square foot house that is 7 miles away should go quickly.

Deborah (my MIL) will do a lunch run for us while we're moving things. Lunch will b e on the house. After we're done everyone is invited to my house where I'll be serving a crock pot of Rotel nacho sausage dip and your pick of the following beverages:
Sam Adams Boston Lager
Guinness Draught
Newcastle Brown Ale
sweet tea, water, half and half, etc.

If there is interest in a pizza order we can do it then. I may finish off the evening with a cigar on the back porch, and I can provide those too if you like to smoke.

Any interest in breakfast?

Slayer's picture

If y’all do breakfast,

If y'all do breakfast, I'm game. I may not be able to stay very long afterwards, depending on when we get done. I have to be somewhere at 6:00pm.

The faster we get done the better. There's almost no such thing as too many people helping you move. Please come if you're interested.

Final Moving Details

Torrent, PM'd you my phone number.

Everyone else,
There are several of us interested in meeting for breakfast so I will be at Shoney's at 8 AM. If that's not your thing then just give me a call around 9 AM and I'll direct you to the apt. It's on Julia St south of University Dr (road across from Olive Garden). Look forward to seeing everyone there.

BTW, there will be no rain delays/cancellations except in the case of a storm severe enough that it would be unsafe to continue. A regular summer shower just means we get wet.

Mintz's picture

Man, we packed up fast.

Man, we packed up fast.

Midnight's picture

Dishes are done, man

Yeah, thank to all who helped. We finished in record time with five people helping. Also got to LAN H1, play Guitar Hero II, and play some 1v1 Soul Calibur on Dreamcast back at my place. gg
