Be undead

The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.

Testing the Waters - LAN party talk

Submitted by Mintz on Sat, 06/23/2007 - 11:57am.

I just want to get a quick count of everybody who would be interested in attending a Halo 1 LAN this summer at Rayne's house. It would most likely be on a weekend.

rapture's also been throwing around the idea of a Shadowrun LAN, but I don't know when he'd want to have that. Either way, two summer LANs can't hurt.

Mintz: Have you been

Mintz: Have you been talking to Midnight. He is planning on having a LAN at his new place. He's mentioned having the THX Birthday LAN there.

However, the THX Bday is near the launch of H3. He wonders if we should wait for H3. If we should wait, how long should we wait? A week? Two weeks? Longer?

Perhaps we could LAN at Rayne's sooner rather than later. We could LAN at Rayne's in the next few weeks and then wait until Sept./Oct. for the THX Bday LAN.

By the way, I'm tossing around the idea of having a LAN in the brewery downtown. I've got to get permission from the owner, but I think it would be the best environment for a LAN. Tons of room. Tons of tables and chairs. Unsure if the THX Bday LAN could be THE LAN to have there or not.

Shadowrun LAN is still on the backburner. THX'ers aren't adopting so I'm coordinating with my SR friends and FASA to find a date that everyone can attend.

I'll have to bring this up on Monday when he shows me his office.

I don't think we should wait for Halo 3 for a couple reasons. First, and perhaps most obvious, is because Halo 3 doesn't launch until September 25, a month after the anniversary (what is the exact anniversary date, anyway? Aug. 9 comes to mind). Even then, it releases on a Tuesday, so the LAN wouldn't be held until the weekend, which is even longer. Second reason is because THX was founded for the love of Halo 1. Wouldn't it make more sense to LAN the game that started the Clan for its anniversary?

My thoughts exactly.

I think Jeff, one of THX's founders, should have the pleasure of hosting the LAN at his house for birthday LAN. Maybe I'm just symbolic like that. The brewery sounds like a great place to LAN eventually, though.

Damn shame. Pick up the game, fellow Casketeers! Ignore the horrendous marketing and atmosphere surrounding the game! It's good. Buy it. Play it. A lot.
I'd like to attend this Shadowrun LAN should it happen.

Are you interested in LANning Rayne's place, rap?

LANs

Mintz,
Thanks for starting this thread. As rapture mentioned, I want to have a LAN at my new place sometime between August and October. I was thinking of making it a H3 LAN because we're going to want to have a huge H3 LAN at some point...aren't we? The only real question to me is how long after Sep 25 should the LAN be. We all need a week or two to get through the campaign and develop muscle memory for the controls in order to really enjoy the LAN. I know I don't want to LAN on the first weekend when I haven't even finished the campaign. Perhaps the second weekend would be enough time.

Rapture even threw out the term "Haloween"?????

The THX birthday is Aug 22 IIRC.

I think a near term LAN at Rayne's and a birthday LAN at my place is a good plan.

I'd have some interest in

I'd have some interest in attending this summer. As long as, there is a H1 contingent.

A Halo 3 LAN a couple weeks

A Halo 3 LAN a couple weeks after the game is out sounds pretty good.

So it looks to me like:

July - LAN @ Rayne's
August 25/26 - Birthday LAN
September 29/30 - Halo 3 LAN

Mintz's picture

Sweet.

Sweet.

I'll go to anything I can

I'll go to anything I can find rides to and have the days off for. I'd love to get Shadowrun, but I don't have the $60 to spare right now. I'd say wait a minimum of a week after the H3 launch so people can finish the campaign and test multiplayer a bit. I can bring various components, pieces, and parts :).

Wait

I am not convinced the birthday LAN and Halo 3 LAN should be separate LANs. The reason is that I plan on the birthday LAN being pretty large and well-organized, like rapture's JANLAN 06. I want to attend a Halo 3 LAN after it comes out. Unless someone else rogers up to plan and host a dedicated Halo 3 LAN then I'm inclined to do the birthday LAN on the 6th of October as a Halo 3 LAN.

Mintz's picture

Why not have TWO large and

Why not have TWO large and well-organized LANs: the birthday LAN and the H3 LAN? There'd be about 1.5 months between the two, at least.

Midnight's picture

Good Idea

Sounds good. I assume you're hosting the H3 LAN?

Unfortunately, I can't stop at Target on my way home and pick up a well-organized LAN. It takes much time, coordination, and even expense. I'm not saying I'll only have one LAN per year at my house (I hope the contrary is true), but I'm not going to sign up for 2 major LANs in 1.5 months. If someone else will host one of the LANs then I'm down for having two. But if they're both on me then I'm hosting an H3/Birthday LAN in early October.

Suggestions are good. Resources to accomplish the suggestions are better.

Umm did you try Costco?

Umm did you try Costco? They sell them next to the cat litter at mine.

I really wish I had a place to host a LAN, 'cause I would.

Was talking with EA, and I think we got it:

July - LAN @ Rayne's

Oct. - LAN @ Midnight's

Eh? eeeehhhh????

Mintz's picture

This reminds me of a line

This reminds me of a line from Pride and Prejudice that goes, "Would I know how to play the piano, I would be delighted to spin a tuneful melody for you!" No matter his intention, the result is the same: he can't play the damn thing.

Thanks

Thanks. I'll check there next time.

A place, as in a suitable LAN facility. My house simply isn't suitable. However, if people are willing to donate funds, I do know of a facility I could rent for a day.

Mintz's picture

Talked to Rayne Today...

I swung by Rayne's (new) desk today and had a little chat about LANning at her place. She'd be happy to host a LAN in mid-July. We went through her house's floor plan and deduced that 34 people can comfortably LAN, which is plenty.

Go vote in the poll for the best date that works for you.

After the polling is over, I'll start a whole thread to keep track of equipment, etc.

Mintz's picture

I guess I'll take care of

I guess I'll take care of organizing it. With Rayne's LAN in July, that leaves two months until Oct. for your LAN.

Now just show up.
