THX Outing Later This Week
I have a hankering to visit the newly opened Mary McGuire's Irish Pub near the corner of Bob Wallace and the Parkway. I'm generally a fan of all things Irish, especially pubs. I'm thinking Thursday around 7 PM. Anybody game?
Give me a year, then come back and ask me that again. :)
Im game, Im always game for beer.
Count me in! I've got a soccer game that evening at 5:30pm, but it should be done by 7:15 or so. I'll tell my brother, too. He's usually down for an irish car-bomb or two...
Then it's a go! Looking forward to trying an all Irish Black and Tan.
Soccer and Irish pubs go together oh so well.
I may be able to make this, so I'll say I'm 'tentative' right now. Irish pubs are great.
This got me thinking about different beers. I usually just drink something like Miller Light, but on ocassion will branch out. I'm not a big fan of the red beers, but do enjoy something different every now and then. Never had a black and tan, or an Irish carbomb.
What is everyone's favorite beer outside of Miller and Bud?
The wikipedia article about black and tans is actually quite interesting: "In the United Kingdom, the correct way of preparing a Black and Tan is considered to be to pour half a pint of dark stout into a pint glass and then top up with draught bitter, so that both beers are thoroughly mixed together.
In the Republic of Ireland a Black and Tan is normally made from a half pint of Smithwick's topped off with Guinness. During the summer months, and some time for variety, stout drinkers may order a black and tan due to its lighter texture. Likewise ale drinkers may order a Smithwick's with a Guinness head. This is an ordinary pint of Smithwick's with the last inch or so topped off with Guinness.
"
I didn't drink from age 17-24, so I never really developed a desire to drink large quantities of cheap beer. Miller Lite is the only American Light that I can tolerate, and I only drink it in a pinch. Coors and the like taste like beer flavored water to me. I'm not being a beer snob; I just don't like them. For some reason it really offends some people when you prefer imports or other more complex beers to American Lites.
I have a few favorites depending on my mood and what stage I'm in. Bass pale ale used to be my mainstay. Now I drink mostly Sam Adams Boston Lager with some Guinness here and there. I don't drink a lot of Black and Tans, but it's a nice treat at bars. It's a little cumbersome to pour Black and Tans at home.
I've never ventured into Irish carbombs for a few reasons:
1) I like to enjoy the taste and social experience of beer, so chugging anything isn't my style.
2) I'm a fairly light-weight drinker, so that shot of Bailey's would necessitate that I drink less overall. I'd rather spend that time with something more enjoyable.
3) I can't imagine drinking half a glass of Guinness at once. Seems like that would be like eating half a pack of saltine crackers in one mouthful.
I've never had one, so maybe I'm wrong.
Every beer I've ever had so far I've hated...and those would be Busch, Coors Light, Budweiser, Bud Lite, and Bud Select. I'm told darker beers are better.
IMO, almost anything is better than that selection.
To be totally honest with you, Coors Light is my favorite beer if I could only live the rest of my life with one of them. It is by far the freshest and best tasting beer you can get...oh and they also have the blue can liner that really locks in that rocky mountain refreshing taste.
Miller lite and Milwaukee beast are my least favorite, but thats pretty irrelevant since I will drink pretty much any beer that is set in front of me. I also have acquired a taste for Natural Light over the years, since it is one of the if not the best tasting "cheap" beer you can buy. Busch is right there with Natural light in the taste department, they seem about the same to me. Bud Light is ok, it ranks somewhere in between Coors and Natural Light to me.
I have been drinking beer since I was 17, though thats not a very long time compared to others...I have had a wide variety of beers. As of late I have enjoyed Yuengling(My favorite Lager), Killians, Amberbock, occasional Guinness, Blue Moon, Dos Equis, random unfiltered wheat beers, and Michelob Light and Ultra.
I am always looking to expand my beer horizons...and look forward to trying some new drinks at the pub on Thursday as Ive never really been to a "authentic" Irish one. Friends + beer always...well almost always = good times.
Miller Lite is the only domestic I care for as well... it's also one of the "lightest" ones around, @ ~100 calories/12 oz (if you're the type that cares). I prefer PBR to any of the other "cheap" brands, for the experience if nothing else. Nothing says "pure white trash" quite like PBR in a can...
I really like Heineken Premium Light, if you're a Heineken fan... bottles are pretty too. They're proud of it though... last I saw was ~$9 for 6.
Yuengling has a Light version now which I prefer over the original. Dos Equis Amber (the brown bottle) is my staple at any Mexican restaurant, although I was a little disappointed when I discovered it was created by a German (I know it doesn't matter, but it sorta ruined the "authentic" feel).
Ultimately, I'll drink anything if you're paying for it. Free beer is good beer.
I'm gonna try to make it out. Since I holstered my Xbox controller long ago, I wouldn't mind catching up with some of you...
I haven't found a beer I liked the taste of, yet.
Hope you can make it, Dave.
I think this thread really shows how often and easily we could all do something as a group (but not LAN, of course). It appears if you throw out an activity and a date/time with a couple days notice that at least 3-4 people will be interested.
Unfortunately, $7-$9 per sixpack seemed to be the norm in CA for Sam Adams and most imports. One week the PX had Sam Adams for $9.99 per twelvepack (no tax either). I stocked up for the rest of the time I was going to be in CA.
Irish car-bombs are, surprisingly enough, rather easy to drink. You make a good point, though. If you enjoy the taste/social experience of beer, and don't want to get sloppy, then there won't be room for many of those.
I like beer in general, but don't drink much at one time anymore like I used to. In the Air Force, particularly in Guam, there wasn't anything else to do! Miller Lite happened to be the "beer of the Islands", so my particular distaste for it is probably due to this association, rather than how it tastes. I don't care for lite beer, either. But everyone seems to have an exception, and mine is Coors Light. Tap the rockies!
If I had to name a favorite, it would be Carlsberg. It's a European lager very similar in taste to Heineken. Other than that, I like ale, lager, pilsner, hefeweizen, and everything in between. Among my favorites are Honey Brown, JW Dundee's Pale Ale, Amber Bock, Yeung-Ling, Sol, Pacifico, Murphy's Irish Stout (better than Guiness imo), Moosehead, and Blue Moon. Pretty much anything Canadian and German are good. Mexican beer is also hard to go wrong with. Ironically, the only one I'm not very fond of in the Mexican category is Dos Equis, which I found out from Skorned's post that it wasn't created by a Mexican. Between XX and the other big Mexican beers, Corona, Modelo, Pacifico, and Sol, Dos Equis' taste is really out of place. I guess now I know why!
That is too funny! <-- But true. Miller High Life canned also comes to mind. Those were the days...
40oz bottles also have a rep, when thinking about cheap beer. We used to drink the heck out of Mickey's 40s back in the day. And nothing says "slummin' in tha hood" like a 40 ounce HG Malt Liquor in a brown paper bag. Not that I know, but I've seen Ice Cube's character in "Boyz in tha Hood" once or twice...
And nothing says "Slummin' in tha 'hood" quite like a 40oz bottle of HG Malt Liquor in a brown paper bag. Not that I know, but I've watched "Boyz in da Hood" enough times.
We did used to kill off 40s of Mickey's back in the day, though. Good times...
Oculus, Disavowed, JDogg, and I made it out last night. We had a great time, and covered such topics as
-The origin, correct spelling, and versatility of the word "schnoker'd"
-Why a Guitar Hero soundtrack was playing in the bar
-The story of Huntsville's oldest whore house
-Sushi that smells like dog crap
-My horrible experience at KFC
-Previous out-of-control bar tabs experiences
-Insane's Halo squatting
We had such a great time we resolved to do it again next Thursday at Buffalo Wild Wings in Jones Valley. They have a kitchen, more televisions, and a quieter atmosphere (no lame live bands). I'll create a thread about it early next week as a reminder. I hope all of those who wanted to come last night can make it next week.
Well, seeing as how I normally have Thursdays off, I might be able to make this one, dependent on my car actually running by that time, and if my radio show isn't on for next week. Wouldn't be able to stay too late, as I have to be at the airport at like 6am Friday morning. Free trip to NY here I come!

So, how did you rate the pub? I've never spent any time in one of these establishments, but am interested in checking some of the better examples out. Especially if I have guides who can give me advise on what I should be ordering.
I'm interested in meeting up next thursday, but my attendance will depend on what kind of night I have the day before.
Brick,
I thought it was mediocre. Wasn't bad at all, but also didn't have anything especially awesome going for it. It almost had a plus in the form of a very large beer selection, but many of the selections fell victim to "it didn't come in" or "the tap is broken." It had a lot of space, wasn't too smoky, and the staff was nice. I enjoyed myself, but I think we can do better for the same price.
Between the four of us we all had ideas that the others liked. Disavowed has especially extensive beer experience.
