Top Ten Guitar Hero 3 Requests

”Guitar

Now that I’ve seen the playlists from Guitar Hero I and II, and played GH II extensively, I want to lay my requests out there for GH III. The selections are geared towards my particular interests, but I think my interests are pretty closely in line with traditional rock and roll and heavy metal that has been the fundamental ingredient in the success of the Guitar Hero series. You’ll notice that like most good songs, most of the tracks below are about drinking, fighting, or having sex. So read on and feel free to disagree, but be sure to post a better idea if you do.

10. Bloodline- Slayer

This would make a great addition for one of the heavier tracks. Simple and heavy, Bloodline’s crisp lyrics and chugging riffs make it a perfect choice for a power-chord laden track in one of the first three setlists. Perhaps they could add some special effects like blood spraying all over the stage when it is played. It's a good pick for one of the more obscure tracks.

9. Pour Some Sugar on Me- Def Lepard

I’m hot, sticky sweet—aren’t you? This 80s rock classic deserves a spot on the GHIII playlist as much as any track. While the guitar is sparing throughout much of the verse, the main hook would be a blast to play. It would also scale well from easy all the way to expert. If you were born between 1975 and 1985 this is probably a staple track for your shower karaoke excursions. Furthermore, Guitar Hero has ignored Def Lepard so far in its first two iterations, making the band’s inclusion in the third installment that much more of a necessity.

8. Highway to Hell- AC/DC

Another band this is yet to be included in the Guitar Hero series. This 1977 album title track has one of the most memorable opening riffs in rock and roll history. The heavy distinction between Malcolm Young’s rhythm tracks and Angus Young’s leads would make it easy to separate the tracks for cooperative play. This would be the new Iron Man of Guitar Hero I. Angus’ Gibson SG would also fit well with the Gibson-heavy theme of the Guitar Hero series.

7. I Drink Alone- George Thorogood

I triple dog dare you to listen to this song and not marvel at how much fun it would be to grind out each unique verse and the incredible solo and choruses. George Thorogood is a solid part of rock and roll history. Let’s show George some love by having a blast pretending to play his Gibson ES-135.

6. Down on Me- Jackyl

Sometime around 1998 I saw Jackyl in Huntsville outside the VBC. For the paltry sum of $10 it remains the best concert value I’ve experienced. With so many memorable guitar hooks this track is 100% perfect. Vocals from Jesse James Dupree make it that much better.

5. Pushing Me Away- Linkin Park

Seriously, is there a Linkin Park track that shouldn’t be on Guitar Hero? This track fits the Guitar Hero style beautifully. The verses are mellow and require sequences of individual notes (harmonics, actually) and the chorus is an intense sequence of power chords. Your right hand had better be in shape to successfully complete the outro on expert difficulty.

4. Dr. Feelgood- Motley Crue

There’s nothing better than a memorable guitar riff comprised of a quick scale of notes followed by a couple of concluding chords. The solo is concise, interesting, and totally bitchin’ Yes, that’s a technical term. The Crue got plenty of love in GH II, where one of their most favored live tracks, Shout at the Devil, was an encore. Their return in GH III is just what the doctor ordered.

3. Blood Pollution- Steel Dragon

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Steel Dragon isn’t a real band. It was created from real musicians for the 2001 film Rockstar, starring Mark Wahlburg. However, much like the fictitious Spinal Tap in GH II, this track is seriously rockin! Lead guitarist Zakk Wylde already has his signature spiral-striped guitar finish featured in GHII. The coincidences are just too much!

2. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin

Yes, it’s trite. Yes, it’s cliché. You know what? Things that are trite and cliché are usually that way for a reason: they’re immensely popular and immensely good! We’ve already seen Free Bird as the culminating track of GH II, so that ship has sailed. Where else can you find over ten minutes of rock and roll anthem like Stairway to Heaven? This should be the final encore of the final setlist. No question.

1. Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …and Justice for All- Metallica

While each of the names above is a title track for an album, I am actually referring to the entire album. Every—single—song. According to the best intel we’ve got, Metallica has so far refused to allow their music in the Guitar Hero series. As such a staple of heavy metal, there’s really no other explanation for their omission. The three above named albums represent the pinnacle of modern heavy metal. Of all of the songs on the three albums, I’d have to pick the title track “Master of Puppets” as my #1 must have for GH III. Everything other Guitar Hero track from the first and second iteration would pale in comparison. This is the zenith. There would be none higher. Now, if Lars would just extract the drumstick he’s sitting on and sell the rights to Activision…

Mintz's picture

Hahah, I love that last sentence. Metallica's omission from Guitar Hero is sorely missed every time I hear one of their songs.

goku2057's picture

I agree with your picks. mostly.

linkin park would be a great addition.

Poor Some Sugar on Me!? Best song ever.

Lars Ulrich is too good for Guitar Hero. Also, iTunes. And puppies.

Now that I think about it. You didn't make any bad choices.

I'd really like to see some more mainstream current stuff on there. Things like; Breaking Benjamin, Trapt, Fall Out Boy, etc.

I think that would be a great addition.

"For the paltry sum of $10 it remains the best concert value I’ve experienced."

By the way, Ozzfest will be free this year.

Mintz's picture

I so hope he comes to HSV! (Or somewhere close)

Midnight's picture

HSV is not really an option. The best we can hope for is ATL. Ozzy didn't even go to San Diego after promising to add it, so I don't hold much hope for the southeast. Also, tickets aren't unlimited. They are free, but you still have to go through a process to get them, and not everyone will get tickets.

Mintz's picture

I was actually thinking of Nashville. Is that closer than ATL? Please answer my question using the "reply" button at the bottom of my post. Go on, you can do it!

Midnight's picture

Perhaps if you would view the forum chronologically like I do it wouldn't matter.

Nashville is closer by about 1.25 hours.

EnragedGnome's picture

I don't think it is coming to ATL. If I remember correctly, the closest shows to me (GA) are Charlotte, NC and West Palm Beach, FL.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out. Concerts with headliners tend to cost too much nowadays.

rapture's picture

Way to go Midnight. I can see a thread developing now.

Oculus's picture

I've got a request,.. "Got no shame" by Brother Cane man that cowbell really puts it in the top of my "freaking cool songs with cowbell" list. Heard it on the Rocket again today and I wanted to smash a guitar at the end it was so good. They're from Birmingham btw.

Midnight's picture

You're gonna want that cowbell.

Mintz's picture

You're gonna want more cowbell.

FoulBreed's picture

The first song that came to my mind when I thought of a more obscure song, was "Pull Me Under" by Dream Theater. That song has a least 2-3 very distinct and very cool riffs and numerous short, but cool solos. It has a great ebb and flow to it. It starts slow, builds, hits a nice crescendo, drops off, slightly builds again and finally slows back down. This pattern is reminiscent of most earlier Metallica (pre black album) songs. I love a good epic song.

On that note, I could not agree with Midnight more about the need for Metallica in guitar hero. I would have to request Fade to Black on principle, as it has been one of, if not my favorite song for years. Creeping Death would also be high on my list. I just want to play the "Die by my Hand Riff" while I chant "Die" in the background. Oh yeah.

I would also like to see a good Scorpions song, like "Rock You Like a Hurricane". Cinderella, Pantera, Black Label Society, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, More G'n'R, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage, Old White Zombie, Drowning Pool and more Alice in Chains would all make me happy.

Mintz's picture

How about the Halo 2 theme with Steve Vai's riffs?

Midnight's picture

FYI, Thunder Kiss 65 by White Zombie is in GH I. After playing GH I I am shocked at its awesome playlist. The GH II playlist is good, but compared side by side GH I pwns it.

Mintz's picture

It sure does, but GHII's playlist isn't anything to sneeze at.

Midnight's picture

Absolutely not. I also think it was easier to make a killer playlist for the 1st GH because it'd never been done before. I can easily rattle of 30 killer songs. How easy can I rattle off 30 more if I can't use the original 30?

neospawn9's picture

where is crazy train??? thats what ive wanted to play on guitar hero since number 1... another one is enter sandman by metallica.... that would be better than master of puppets...

Midnight's picture

Wholeheartedly agree on Crazy Train. Vehemently disagree about Enter Sandman vs Puppets.

JDOGG85's picture

Well, Ive played both Guitar Hero 1 and 2 and they both have some good songs to play. Not sure which one has the best, but I think GH1 has a few more songs that I actually like to listen to. Though GH2 might have more that are fun to play IMO. Here are a few songs that I would love to see in GH3:

  • Diecast - Fade Away
  • Trivium - Falling to Grey, The Rising, or Ascendancy
  • Black Label Societ - Suicide Messiah
  • Disturbed - Stricken
  • Eagles - Hotel California
  • Fuel - Sunburn
  • Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, or Sweet Home Alabama
  • Pink Floyd - Time
  • Silvertide - Aint Coming Home, Devils Daughter, or Blue Jeans
  • Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride
  • Tantric - Astounded
  • Van Halen - Hot For Teacher
  • ZZ Top - La Grange
  • Alter Bridge - One Day Remains
  • Killswitch Engage - When Darkness Falls, Breathe Life, Take This Oath
  • Dragonforce - Through the Fire and Flames(This song would scare me for Guitar Hero 3!)

There is no order to these songs, but just a few that I think would be fun to play on it. No Metallica was included, but obviously they probably wont be on there so we can wish all we wont. There are lots more you could add, its hard to pick through all the music I have let alone all the music that is out there. And Master of Puppets would qwen Enter Sandman in GH.

Midnight's picture

Would only like to see Hotel California if I can unlock Jesus Quintana and play as him in a purple jumpsuit.

Slayer's picture

Hotel California would be sweet!

n00b's picture

Dude, the things I'd love to see are some AC/DC, Metallica, Breaking Benjamin, and The Who, and more A7X baby, Batcountry, unholy confessions, or burn it down.

Another song I would like to see on Guitar Hero is WIshmaster. This would fit good in the metal section.

I HATE GREENDAY!!!! They used to be good, but now they act like a bunch of emo British twelve year olds. They lost me at American Idiot. They're kind of like the singing guy version of Madonna.

JDOGG85's picture

* "Suck My Kiss" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
* "La Grange" by ZZ Top
* "Number Of The Beast" by Iron Maiden
* "Through The Fire And Flames" by DragonForce

The last one is going to be scary to play.

JDOGG85's picture

Here are more songs posted by IGN:

Miss Murder - (by AFI)
3's and 7's - (by Queens of the Stone Age)
Raining Blood - (by Slayer)
Reptillia - (by The Strokes)
Paranoid - (as made famous by Black Sabbath)
Cities on Flame - (as made famous by Blue Oyster Cult)
Mississippi Queen - (as made famous by Mountain)

"Rainging Blood" should be awesome to play, looks like Midnight has got atleast one of his wishes of being able to play some Slayer.

for pete sakes, its called legends of rock, that means LEGENDS not some newer scremo bands that some people have or have not heard of, some of you have a good idea with megadeath and such but, bands like AFI and, Green Day are in NO WAY legends

Mintz's picture

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE??

n00b's picture

Metallica are in both of these games

JP's picture

'Home' by Dream Theater would be my pick, since it has many cool riffs, obscure time signatures and melody at the end, and overall challenging and distinctive bass and guitar scores. Others want a song like 'Metropolis', but good luck finding a singing who can sound decent striking the notes James Labrie does in that one. Home is more of a fun song too, whereas metropolis would only attract the prog purists.

For guitar hero 4, they are tributing aerosmith. Which JP is better? Petrucci or Perry? lol OBVIOUS!

I don't even play GH that much or anything, but DT deserves some respect!! Give credit where it's due

chris's picture

hey what about three days grace?how about animal i have become? i think that will be good 4 a guitar game!

Mintz's picture

I noticed that "Knights of Cydonia" by the Muse is going to be in GH3. Awesome.

Brinstar's picture

Some Wishes.

"Pinball Wizard" The Who
"While my Guitar Gently Weeps" Beatles
"ZERO" and "Porcalena of the Vast Oceans" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Everlong" Foo Fighters (or "My Hero")
"White Rabbit" Jefferson Airplane
"All Along the Whatchtower" Jimmi Hendrix
"Bohemian Rhapsody" Queen (why didn't they do this one instead?!)

And some "less epic" songs I think would be fun to play:
"Spiderwebs" and/or "Snakes" by No Doubt (if you haven't heard Snakes, check it out, was before ND started to suck).
"Reach for the Sky" by Social Distortion

Marked1234's picture

The entire tracklist of the new Songs from Guitar Hero 3,and they are the full length songs as well!
