360 kaput... again.

That's right my 360 is broken for the second time. This time, not only am I getting the three red lights blinking on my console. But my disc drive is messed up too. Plus, and here is the kicker, Microsoft refuses to cover the expenses, even though this is the second time I am having to get my 360 replaced!

Naturally, I am very annoyed by this. I think it is ridiculous that I should have to pay for the fix. So I don't know what I am going to do. I may just not get it fixed. I have thought about purchasing an Elite console instead. But if I did this, I wouldn't want any accessories. I already have four controllers and whatnot. I just want my console replaced.

I really don't know what I am going to do about all this.

You can whine about it on public forums, because that seems to accomplish a lot.

Master Kim's box broke just now too. He also has plants growing out of his garbage disposal.

I would guess that over 50% of the 360 owners that I know have had to send in their boxes for service.

I'm going to do a survey soon just to get a headcount.

Sorry for your lose, Slayer. Just in time for the H3 beta.

@Mintz: WTF mate?

Mintz's picture

It's a strange form of sarcasm, you see, because whining on public forums really does accomplish a lot these days.

Man, that blows hard. I don't really have any good advice. Used cores on ebay don't really save you enough to justify the hassle and unknown factor. What subcode are you getting? Google 360 error codes to find out how to pull up the subcode.

Mine's a first gen and still running with no errors, hopefully it stays that way, I really have no money to get a new one, or even pay for repair :(.

I have a first gen 360 as well, no big problems with it yet. Though, I am sure there will be at some point in time because every time i crank it up once the disk or fans start spinning there is a weird scraping sound...who knows that that is pwening inside of there. Hope you get it worked out Slayer, they shouldn't make anyone pay to fix the crap that breaks...it's their mess. If they could making quality product then we would most likely not be having these conversations or issues.

And Mintz, do we need to get that measuring tape out? Is your spider sense tingling...

Well, I am shelling out $140 to get my 360 fixed. I am extremely upset about this. I'm tired of arguing with tech support and customer service over what they ought to do. So I am giving in. This is probably the wrong thing to do, but I don't care. I just hate dealing with it. I just want the freaking thing fixed!

Slayer's picture

BTW, at this point my 360 is literally dead. It won't boot up at all. At least last time it would work off and on.

They are giving me one month of XBL free and a 1 year warranty with my replacement 360. The funny thing is, if they had given me a 1 year warranty with my last replacement, then I would STILL be under warranty!

But you cannot argue with these people. Partly because they speak really bad English. It sucks, it sucks all the way 'round!

My Xbox 360 that broke this Sunday is the first and only one I've had so far, and I've had it for well over a year. Just think of how much longer it would have lasted if that damn Intercooler hadn't destroyed my console. (Now, for something totally unrelated that you will hate me for saying: If this happened with a PC, I could just repair it or get a spare part instead of buying a new one altogether. :D)

It's funny how both of our Xbox 360s died out on the same day.

I get my 360 back tomorrow! Finally, I can play H3 and Guitar Hero on my own box!

Slayer, if you've got a warranty on the replacement, just take advantage of it and send it back. It's painful. It sucks. But you can't fall victim to the fallacy of current investment. Evaluate your options based on chances of success from this point forward. I would send it in.

If you really want to stir the pot you could file a complaint with the BBB. I used this in a dispute with Best Buy and it got uber-fast customer service from their corporate office. You can file the complaint online.

I actually did think about the BBB, I think I might try that.

I just feel ripped. Talking to those customer support people drives me crazy too. They don't speak the best English, it's hard to explain my situation to them, and even if I am successful, they can't do anything about it.

When I contacted Nyko Technologies, a nice, helpful man was on the other end of the line and guided me through everything and he was perfectly clear--he understood the details and told me step-by-step what I should do. He told me all I had to do was provide a box to place the 360 and the Intercooler in and send it through UPS and charge it on their account, so I don't pay a cent for shipping and handling. Nyko is going to provide the replacement console for free and I will have it in the mail along with a newer, improved version of the Intercooler which will not fry my 360, within one-to-two weeks. I sent it over a week ago on Friday. I'm expecting to see it this week.

It's nice when customer support actually works out.

Personally, I had a good experience with Xbox customer support when my 360 broke. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and fast.

Slayer's picture

Don't get me wrong, they were nice to me too. And they tried to help. But the language barrier kinda made things difficult.

Man that does suck slayer, I am currently on my 4th 360, all I can say is take that hard drive off and see if it boots up, if it does then you may have a hd problem, if it still doesn't then yeah you have to send it in, be nice but direct to them about your frustrations on this, they should be putting you in touch with a tier 2 tech or some one higher then the average Customer support, if they don't then ask to speak to a supervisor or tier 2 tech, explain your frustration on missing out on the Halo 3 beta and tell them that you want either YOUR console fixed or replaced with a new one and not a refurb, if they continue to tell you that all you get is a refurb, then push it a bit further by telling them that you have no choice but to file a complaint to the BBB, this should get the ball rolling to at least get you some free-bees, like a game or extra controller or maybe some MS points, I got 3200 points and a free 1 month gold card. GET THAT EXTENDED WARRANTY!! its only $29.99 and on top of that you also get your 1 year warranty that they already provide. Hope this helps man.

Simply go to your local Walmart and buy a new machine. Take the new one out of the box, replace it with the broken one, then bring the box back to Walmart with your receipt. Get your credit card refunded. Vwalla!
