360 demo out: Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

Submitted by rapture on Fri, 04/20/2007 - 3:43pm.

I saw a buddy on my list playing the new C&C3 demo. Indeed it was released this morning. After the 1GB download hit my demos folder, I gave it a try. Words to describe my first session:

Deep, complex, strategy, cool, fun.

I got my butt kicked by some girl (I could tell because there's XBOX Live vision support while playing). Apparently, I've got a lot to learn. I'm going to play the demo a bit more (especially when the Shadowrun demo ends). I might make a purchase (for the PC version).

Neowin.net said: The demo for Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars has been released to Xbox Live Marketplace for you to download and (hopefully) enjoy. The demo clocks in at 1 GB exactly, and includes two singleplayer maps, and one multiplayer map with Xbox Live Vision camera support.

C&C3 on Xbox 360 comes with a console specific control scheme that will hopefully be intuitive and easy to use, two console only multiplayer modes (Capture the Flag and Siege) and of course the Xbox Live Vision camera support we are hearing so much about. Nothing like seeing the ugly mug of the weirdo 13 year old kid who just owned you. Brings back memories of late night Counter-Strike play sessions. Yikes.

So go forth my friends, download the demo and enjoy. Remember, the retail release of Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars will be on May 10th.

I used to be a C&C addict.

O RLY?

The Command and Conquer 3 demo for the 360 came out today? I checked it out earlier today and I didn't see anything...

Command and Conquer 3 kicks tremendous ass. Although I can't help but think how RTS games will never reach their full potential on consoles with the traditional RTS control system and with hardware limitations...

Downloaded the demo today as

Downloaded the demo today as well. Plan to crank it up tomorrow. I also took a look at the trailer, but wasn't very impressed.

It wasn't a featured download when I downloaded it. It wasn't even in the "newly released demos" list. I had to search through the games directory.

I know...that is such BULLCRAP! C&C is one of the best, if not the best, RTS franchises out there. Red Alert and Red Alert 2 occupied almost all my gaming time in my freshman year of high school. I also foolishly tried to play them on dial-up. Yeeesh. Its totally awesome though. I took the Boot Camp as a refresher course, and beat the 2 single player missions there. MP anyone?

Mintz's picture

I still have the Red Alert

I still have the Red Alert CDs in my drawer here! Unfortunately, I can't run them on this computer because it's too new. Even if I run it in Windows 95 mode, there's no sound and I only see one quarter of the screen. It makes me sad. I used to own Tiberian Sun, but I can't find the CD anymore! That made me very sad the day I couldn't find it after looking all day.

I really want to like C&C3, and I hope the demo/control scheme have a positive influence on my choice.

Master Kim's picture

RTS FTW

I've been playing Command and Conquer games (and RTS in general) since I was like six. I used to spend forever playing the Red Alert series, Tiberian Sun, even a little time in Generals (which was a disappointment, but a fun fragfest in RTS form).

I still have all my disks. Except for Yuri's Revenge, but nobody liked it anyway. :(

I got Command and Conquer 3 when it came out in March. The 360 version actually looks promising, I must admit. Though I don't think it will ever match its PC brother. Mouse and keyboard > game pads for RTS. And shooters. And (MMO)RPGs.

Mintz's picture

Just finished playing all

Just finished playing all the Single-Player stuff in the demo. I fell in love with it. I forgot I was using a controller after a while.

I'm hooked.

Badly.

I played the demo and liked it alright. However, I'd rather use a trebuchet and camel archers to take down the Byzantines in AOE.

Now that would be something...AOE for the 360. I would love it with the exact control scheme of this demo. I used to be a big AOE II addict.

Master Kim's picture

Speaking of Ensemble Studios...

When was the last time we saw news about Halo Wars?

And I agree, I'd rather use my Elite Longbowmen to bring down Frankish knights than play Command and Conquer 3. I've been playing Age of Empires II since I was like six. I was and am still a huge addict.

Yeah, and I bet you'll love it even more on your kickass gaming rig. Buy it.

I've had C&C3 since it came out last month, but unfortunately I haven't had the time to finish the campaign, go online and play with other peeps, etc. The fact that my PC is made out of crap and I am in a desperate need to upgrade is also a factor.

I've been playing the PC

I've been playing the PC demo. I reminds me of Civilization. I would say that CNC3 is Civilization with futuristic weapons and technology. Liking it. Considering a purchase, although I probably shouldn't.

Master Kim's picture

Let me rephrase that...

Excuse me, I should have rephrased that--"You'll love it even more on the kickass gaming rig you're going to make."

C&C3 = Win.

I'm feeling the exact same way. I want to save my money, but then CNC3 comes along...

Master Kim's picture

Why didn't you guys get it in March?

It was a highly anticipated game, editorials gave it reviews of 8/10, 80%, 4/5 and up. It looks awesome and is fun to boot. I'd have thought most of you would have it by now.

The XBOX 360 media hyped the 360 version. I tried it and then dl'd the PC version.

Hahahahahahhahahaahahhahahahahhaahhahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahhaha.

It seems so silly to purchase a console over a PC. Although, lately, I've been spending plenty of time on my Xbox. Hopefully, I can get the PC of my dreams by next year, and I'll most likely let my 360 collect dust by then.

Midnight's picture

It's not silly if that's

It's not silly if that's what you want.

360 vs PC

It's also not silly if price is an issue for you.

Master Kim's picture

Okay, perhaps it's not that silly..

But when you think about it, 360s are not as cheap as they are in the long-run. Sixty dollars a game? Fifty dollars per wireless controller? Sixty dollar wireless microphone? Don't forget the other peripheals.

Oh, and don't forget, if you truly want to experience the best visuals your 360 has to offer, you'll need an HDTV. And if you want the best, you'll probably have to spend over a thousand dollars (that's a rough guestimate).

Don't get me wrong, PCs are expensive, but if you pinch your pennies, save money, decide to build your own machine, it can end up being cheaper than console gaming.

Plus, some of us want that superior performance and there are some games that don't work as well on consoles as they do on the PC (i.e. RTS titles, MMORPGs).

Midnight's picture

It's fine if you want that

It's fine if you want that performance. I don't. You're not spending my money, so I don't care.

You'll also never convince me that console gaming is as expensive as PC gaming. You can try to fudge the numbers and count my HDTV, but you know I can play on the same LCD monitor you use with your PC, so it's moot. Furthermore, nobody builds a PC to play games on par with consoles, which are the numbers I usually see quoted. Everyone builds powerhouses with video cards powered by chainsaw engines. Even if you can build a PC that will play console quality games for the same cost as a console, why spend the time and effort if you're not exceeding the console specs? Just buy the console at Target and call it a day.

To be clear, I support your choice to play PC games and to prefer them over console games. Everyone should do what fits with his values, needs, and wants. What I don't support is the arrogance that usually accompanies PC gamers when talking about console gamers, as if all of us console gamers are idiots because we chose Ford versus Chevy or because we don't need the latest graphics hardware to have fun. I also don't support the falsehood that all of the costs associated with console gaming equal PC gaming hardware. That is a lie made up to substantiate the expensive purchase of PC gaming hardware, pure and simple.

I don't care what anyone does with his money, but I'm not going to let you get away with implying that my decision is "silly." I have different values. I don't want what you want. We're different. That doesn't mean anyone is superior because of that difference.

Master Kim's picture

O RLY?

I'm not one of those arrogant PC gamer-purists who think games should only be played with mice and keyboards--I own an Xbox 360 myself. It's one of the best gaming systems I've ever had (next to the N64).

I don't want to say that PCs are cheaper than consoles, that would be pulling stuff out of my ass. I just want to say that it's entirely feasible for a gamer to save up enough money and get an awesome gaming rig of his own. If you want superior performance (and in my opinion, a superior machine), then I think you might want to spend that money.

I understand your choice, and I respect your opinion. Come on, though, can you play AOEII with a game pad like you can with a mouse and keyboard or run Half-Life 2 maxed at 1600 X 1200 on a console? :)

rapture's picture

I've been doing some

I've been doing some research (I'm building a new gaming rig). RAM, HDD's, and CPU prices have drastically been reduced lately. I know someone building a high-end PC for $1000. That's all the parts (wires, fans, case) and it's high-end (320MB DX10 card, 2.4 Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 1TB HDD space).

All of a sudden killer PC's are cheap. Some people will be able to upgrade into those specs for less than the cost of a 360.

I'm just saying that the price isn't as big a factor as it used to be.

Midnight's picture

A rig like that for $1000 is

A rig like that for $1000 is certainly a step up from where things used to be.

DDR2 RAM and Intel Core 2

DDR2 RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo's fell to the tune of 40-50% last week. I just bought a processor for $200. The week before it would have cost near $500.

I have just moved my 360 over next to the PC since I will now be able to get into XBL on the computer and see what is going on.

I also picked up Command & Conquer 3 for the PC tonight. The last RTS game I've played was Warcraft. Hopefully we can get into some THX team games later.

C&C 3

I played some C&C 3 PC multiplayer tonight. I'd been playing against the computer (and getting my butt whooped). But multiplayer is a blast. Get 2 other people on your team, sometimes one person can focus on air support, one on the ground assault and so on. Then get all of your army in one or two massive blitzkrieg forces and reek havok.
