Well, that was a waste of
Well, that was a waste of hype; we knew this stuff already. I wish they would have specified the price of the standalone HDD.
They did....
They did....
$180 for the separate 120GB
$180 for the separate 120GB hdd.
You'll be able to get optical audio out of a dongle that's separate from the HDMI cable that comes with the system.
There is no "limited edition". You'll be able to buy the black 360 at any time.

Out of luck
BTW: There is no way to xfer data from a Premium/Core XBOX to an Elite XBOX. MS is releasing a cable to xfer data from a 20GB hdd on a box to a 120GB hdd on that same box. Hdd to hdd is one thing. XBOX to XBOX is another.
They are working on a way to xfer from one box to another box. You see, data gets tied to an XBOX as well as a hdd. Evidentially, it's a problem in having the same data on two different XBOXen.
I guess if you get the Elite and have a premium, you'll have to manually download a bunch of stuff.
Oh, I didn't see it in the
Oh, I didn't see it in the above story or on the HDD's product page. Thanks for clarifying, rap.
I'm not about to drop $180 on 120GB. I don't think $180 is worth the convenience of not deleting demos.
Major Nelson released a
Major Nelson released a special mid-week podcast yesterday talking about the Elite. It's pretty informative. It also mentioned something I had thought of briefly but didn't think was worth mentioning: The Elite has a HDMI cable included, unlike the PS3. Those of us in the know purchase HDMI cables online for less than $10 shipped, but the average BB/CC customer doing a 1:1 comparison is going to be impressed that they can save $50 more with the 360 over the PS3 just because of a cable.
It also talked about the price of the 120GB HD. Mitigating factors are
1. MS doesn't produce the HD themselves. They have to buy it from a manufacturer/wholesaler.
2. It's a laptop sized, external HD, and comparing it to the internal 500GB for $99 HDs isn't apples to apples.
3. They have to put it in their own packaging/case once they get it from the manufacturer.
4. It has to have a layer of security. The only way they're able to offer video marketplace is because it's a "secure" closed environment. If you take that away then a lot of cool features of XBL go away (because the production company won't let it be offered on XBL if it can be pirated).
5. Because the HD stores some vital game data, they require that it maintain certain performance specs that other HDs aren't held to. It's OK if your computer's HD is overtasked and takes 3 seconds to open a .ppt instead of 2 seconds. It's not OK if Shivering Isles freezes/stutters while you're fighting a baddie. There are costs associated with producing hardware that meets those specs.
I'm not a MS apologist, but the factors do make sense. Yeah, I'd rather buy it for $129, but such is life.
Looks like I may have a good
Looks like I may have a good reason to purchase an Elite soon. I just went to play Oblivion and my 360 gives me one red light, E74, and sub-error 1022. Code indicates it's the AV cable or A/V encoder chip. My bet is on the chip. More to follow.
Uh oh. Blessing in disguise?
Uh oh. Blessing in disguise?
Just called Xbox support to
Just called Xbox support to offer them $130 to fix my box. I read them off my console's serial number and they read it back correctly, then told me it's under warranty until Oct 2007 and the repair will be free. The manufacture date is 10-12-2005. What am I missing?
Wait, so this is the same
Wait, so this is the same box you've had since the launch, and it's still under warranty? That's awesome. Either the system broke in your favor or they updated their warranty policy for early consoles.
Edit: Well well well, look what Major Nelson posted today.
The only thing I can figure
The only thing I can figure out is maybe they assume my date of purchase to be the day I registered the console on xbox.com, which might have been Oct 2006 (since they say my warranty expires Oct 2007). I am really clueless. The new warranty info doesn't specify anything about longer warranties for 2005 consoles.
