Halo 3 SKUs Announced. $129 for Helmet Edition. Updated

Submitted by Mintz on Fri, 03/16/2007 - 5:13pm.

So, the final packaging for Halo 3 has been officially announced. Here's what Louis Wu says about it:

Official Halo 3 Packaging Announcement
TeamXbox has the official Microsoft press release for Halo 3's commercial packaging - and some pretty big changes can be found in it. There are still three editions - Standard, Limited, Legendary - but price and contents for the Legendary and Limited Editions are quite different from the older information we got at the end of last year. (The Standard edition is the same - ERP of $59.99, box contains only the game.) The Limited Edition is still $69.99 ERP, comes in a metal box, and contains the game, along with the Making Of Halo 3 DVD that was promised earlier - but now it also contains a book:

[...] a special "Halo" fiction and art book. A must-have for "Halo" collectors and a source of invaluable and exclusive information, the piece is an elaborate and compelling guide to the species and factions that inhabit the worlds of the "Halo" universe, with never-before-seen art and story elements that expand and illustrate the depth and breadth of the "Halo" fiction.

The Legendary Edition is now listed with an Estimated Retail Price of $129.99 (up from the anticipated $99.99) - it still contains the helmet case, the game, and the Making-Of DVD, but instead of two discs containing cutscenes and fan creations, there is now ONE extra disc (containing both), along with 'an illuminating collection of original "Halo 3" storyboard art from artist Lee Wilson, depicting key moments and pivotal scenes from the epic cinematic production of "Halo." ' Interesting changes; I'm not thrilled with the Legendary price bump, and I'm REALLY not thrilled that the Legendary Edition is not a superset of the editions below it (for that rabid Halo fan who needs EVERYTHING Bungie releases, Halo 3 is going to cost $200 - because the Limited Edition contains a book not present in the Legendary pack)... but it's still early days, things might change again.

I agree with his disappointment; why doesn't the Legendary edition come with the book?!

Update: Frankie eases some tension when he says:

The other froth was caused by the revelation that the Limited Edition would contain one piece of content that isn’t in the Legendary Edition. Well, don’t worry about that at all. The Legendary Edition purchasers will be pleased to know that they will not have to live without that content at all. More on that later (some of the details are still being worked out), but it should be smiles and sunshine. Seriously.

This is most disagreeable.

Why the hell would they have two special editions of the same game?

The fact that they were intending to sell the Legendary Edition for one hundred bucks was outrageous, but what agitated me even more was the fact that there is another limited edition of Halo 3. A collector or a fan who wants it all would have to buy not just the Legendary Edition, but probably the Limited Edition as well. That equates to probably over $200. What the hell?

For many titles, there's usually the standard copy, and then a special edition version. Sometimes you payed extra for the latter, but it worked--people got what they would have gotten in the standard issue, and more. Not with Halo 3. Maybe if the Legendary Edition had everything the Limited Edition had, it would work out, but instead they drive people like me crazy over the fact that the Limited Edition is going to have a different, but shiny tin not included in the Legendary version.

This is giving me a headache.

I'm with

I'm with Master Kim on this one. I'm not so sure that I'm buying the legendary version any more. Yes, I know it's just 30 bucks more than I was going to pay. But this is starting to make me wonder what they're thinking. I'm also thinking that there are going to be other games on my playlist when H3 comes out, leaving me to make a decision as to how much I am willing to pay for this thing. Yes, I did think they were pushing it by charging me 100$ for the legendary, but I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Now it seems they're just trying to milk me for a little more money. I'm not much of a collector, so the helmet is just decoration for me. I might feel differently when the day comes, but I was pissed when gamestop called me to report the official price.

I figured that $100 was a

I figured that $100 was a guestimate. I was actually expecting the helmet to be $150 or more. $120 is steep. But, this is the last HALO. Bungie's earned my business. And, I'd like the chance to own a helmet.

But yeah. Two special editions for one game is a little weird.

Master Kim's picture

Like I said, $100 isn't what's agitating me.

Two special editions?

Mintz's picture

Yeah, I'm only sticking with

Yeah, I'm only sticking with the $130 version because it's Halo. Besides, we all know the game is completely worth it.

2 cents

Paying $100+ for a game is freaking rediculous. $100 isn't what it used to be, but it's still a solid chunk of money.

Master Kim's picture

Xbox 360 titles are expensive as they are. We don't need this.

I mean, sixty dollars? I could find better games in the PC market priced at twenty-to-fifty USD. Many people wouldn't normally buy a game at its full price of around forty or fifty dollars unless they were anticipating it. Sixty dollars is what you should pay for a special version of a standard game.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind buying the Legendary Edition for $100, but the fact that they said they would increase it just boggles the mind.

Slayer's picture

Yeah, I barely rationalized

Yeah, I barely rationalized my way into paying $100, there is no way on this earth I am going any higher. In fact, I am thinking of asking if I can put the down payment I made toward a different edition.

I think gamestop allows you to change editions. I'm going to be making a stop up there soon enough.

Yeah, I'm not very happy

Yeah, I'm not very happy that they bumped up the price, but I'm the kind of guy that wants everything. It wouldn't feel right to just buy half of what I could have.

rapture's picture

You can. You can move your

You can. You can move your down payments across games. I've done that before.

For the amount of time that

For the amount of time that I put into the game, it'll still be a heck of a deal (provided H3 doesn't get CoD3'd).

Now, how much time I put into a game? That's a different issue.

I'm just getting the normal version. it's not what's on the outside that matters, but what's on the inside. If the game is good I really don't care about a toy helmet or some extra footage. Besides all that time I would spend watching the extras would be time I could be playing the actual game, so that when you all are done watching your extras I'll be ready to own you all when you are ready to play.

Master Kim's picture

I admire your apathy.

It's all in the name of enjoying the Halo universe. It's interesting to see what went into making a game, what might have been, what could have been. Plus, collectors love this kind of paraphernalia.

Besides, everybody here is going to play the game first before they start watching commentary or some behind-the-scenes footage.

Bonuses

This is very true. I bought the special edition of Gears of War, and I still haven't seen the bonus material on the second disc.

Slayer's picture

I have never watched the

I have never watched the making of Halo 2 DVD. But I think that is all the more reason to consider a lower priced edition.

Mintz's picture

Well, I watched the Halo 2

Well, I watched the Halo 2 DVD as soon as I finished campaign, and that's probably because I like Halo more than Gears. So I think that is all the more reason to get the expensive edition.

I think it's purely love of

I think it's purely love of the series that I will be getting Legendary Edition. I mean, come on, admit that this thing is pretty sweet.

Mintz's picture

I admit it.

I admit it.

Let's all give in...

Let's all become starstruck with the sight of a shiny metal tin encasing a videogame.

The free market is great. If it's worth your $130 buy it. If not, don't.
