GRAW 2 First Impressions

Submitted by Midnight on Sat, 03/10/2007 - 2:56pm.

GRAW 2

Having missed out on the original GRAW and looking for some gaming excitement to hold me over until some of the new summer releases, I bought GRAW 2 from BestBuy last night. FYI, I had them pricematch Circuit City's online price, so I got it for $49.99.

Gamespot gave it 8.7. You can read the full review here.

Overall, I like it a lot. One of the first things I noticed is that it comes pretty close to matching Gears of War's graphics. The lighting, textures, and ploygons are very, very impressive--definitely the most realistic I've ever seen.

The pace of the game is probably not for everyone. This is a strategic shooter, not a run-and-gun. If UT/Quake is the upper end of fast and chaotic, Halo/H2 is in the middle, and this is a very slow-paced strategic shooter. Emphasis is on command of your team and assets. Personally I like that. You are also given a lot of different assets to command: a UAV, a "mule," your team of Ghosts, infantry, light armored vehicles, and air support just to name what I've encountered in Act 1. The AI is also pretty good, requiring very little micromanagement once you give them orders. The AI isn't perfect, as my APC parked itself next to three hostile Mexican rebels and decided to take a lunch break. Thankfully, the rebels were just as oblivious to the APC.

The control scheme is easy to adjust to. However, the game is complex. There are a lot of things to control. You actually don't have to control anything but yourself, but you'll make much shorter work of hostiles through effective employment of recon and assault assets. Additionally, the 3rd person view isn't very distracting, ala GoW. You can change to 1st person view, but I haven't played with that.

I am only about 30% done with the campaign, but I am enjoying the game thoroughly. I haven't played a single multiplayer game, so I've no experience with that yet. I'll report more as I get further into the game.

That's good to hear.

I was afraid into buying GRAW2 due to the fact that Ubisoft likes to rush their products sometimes. Basically, I was skeptical that it would be just as good as its predecessor. It's not, apparently, but good enough for me to buy it. I think I'll purchase a copy sometime.

GRAW2

GRAW 1 is a solid game, I can't see this one being any different. Glad to hear the graphics are comparable to gears, that in combination to how good the first one was makes me want this game. How does it compare to the first GRAW?

As I mentioned in the article, I've never played the original GRAW. I was in Iraq when it was released. However, I've been waiting to find it for $20 since I think it might be worth a play.

The original GRAW was only a reason to justify your four-hundred dollar console purchase.

I'm really enjoying the multiplayer portion. Sometimes it's almost too real. It's difficult to find people. Some of the maps are very large. Anyway, I'm going to try creating a clan for us in the clan interface. I think this would be a very fun THX multiplayer game until H3 beta comes out.

You can have mine for 20.

You can have mine for 20.

This is just my opinion on the matter and should be taken as such

I have a feeling the 6-round capacity

I have a feeling the 6-round capacity grenade launcher (M32GL, I think) is going to suffer the same fate as the noob combo and frag-tag. It's uber-easy to get kills with it. Fortunately, if you don't like it you can host your own game with a custom kit restriction that doesn't allow explosives.

Indeed.

I realized everybody was going to hate me the moment I first used the grenade launcher.

GRAW 2 Demo Thoughts

I downloaded the GRAW 2 Multiplayer demo for 360 today and here's some thoughts I had on it.

The graphics were probably some of the best I've seen to date. I'd probably put them a little better than gears of war because of the realism. Simply fantastic. I won't comment much on the gameplay because I haven't played it enough to form an opinion, but I did like the strategic aspect of it.

Now, for the bad part. When I joined a game that was already in progress I couldn't find a way to jump in and spectate somehow. This left me with many minutes just sitting on my butt waiting for the game to end so I could join. The control scheme for this game is unfortunate. I'd swear that there's a lag to when I move a control stick and what happens on the screen. Also, when your in zoom mode or aim mode, it ends up moving your crosshairs around your screen instead of moving the look angle (like most fps). I can't stand it. If someone knows how to turn this off please let me know and I'll retract my statement. Also it's hard to explain this, but your 'look' will accelerate increasingly according to how _long_ you press the look joystick instead of how _much_ you press the joystick. This makes it feel like you don't have full control of your aiming. It sucks IMHO.

I really wish this was different, because the game looks like one of the best graphics wise that I've seen yet. I haven't played the single player, I bet it's great.(excluding the control problems)

Thoughts?
