Terry's Pizza Lives!

This might be old news to you. But, I was in the Star Supermarket on Hwy 72 and for the first time saw a sign for Terry's pizza in the back. I thought they had gone out of business, but sure enough there was a fire oven and many Terry's pizza boxes laying around. Turns out Star Supermarked bought the rights and formula, and possibly the ovens. It was also posted in the December 22, 2006 Huntsville Times and here on al.com. I didn't eat there much when the restaurants were in business, and I'm not sure if the pizzas will taste the same, but the name lives on.

I ate at Terry's exactly once. After I experienced almost-mediocre pizza in a not-so-alluring atmosphere I decided that Terry's has a franchise built on name recognition and not quality.

The old Greenbrier in Madison is the same way. Everyone raves about it, but when I ate there I had mediocre, ultra-deep-fried food served on picnic tables. No thanks.

The new Greenbrier, however, is excellent.

Terry's Pizza was my favorite pizza. It was better than Donato's. I sat outside the Terry's parking lot for a good while the afternoon they shut their doors. I, however, haven't had the Terry's branded pizza from Star Market. I know several people who have and like them. Star Market is always just a little out of the way and so I don't know when I will get a Terry's Pizza. I'm sure I will eventually.

What's Terry's Pizza? I remember all the hubbub last year about them closing down, but what's so special about 'em? Is it like Midnight said, just a name?

It was one of the first pizza eateries in Alabama. It was the first in Huntsville. They had 3 locations in HSV.

IMHO Midnight is right about Terry's and wrong about Greenbrier... but I'm a sucker for hushpuppies.

Terry's is still good to me. Now some have made the mistake of getting the boxed Terry's and taking them home to cook them. If you don't have a fire pizza oven at home, don't waste your time because it taste like any other freezer box pizzza. If you order one let them cook it. I'm in my 40's and living in Alabama was raised on Terry's. I moved to Las Vegas for awhile and with all the choices never could find something comparable to the taste. Don't know what makes it different, it just is. Everytime I made a trip back home it was on my to do list with me even buying one bagging it up and taking it back with me so my boyfriend and friends could see what I was talking about.
So I guess it's all in what you're use to, and what you have to compare it with and what you are looking for in a good pizza.

When I first heard Terry's Pizza was closing, I literally almost cried. My mom called me in Atlanta (where I live now and have for 13 years) with the 'sad news' she said....It is my absolute favorite pizza..I think it's the sauce and the sausage combo along with the seasoned crust. It was always on the top of my list to have when I was home...I always carried it out - I'd agree the atmosphere wasn't very inviting....
But this passed weekend when I went home - to Huntsville - my mom told me she ran up on the Star Market that had them - and sure enough one was waiting for me when we got into town. We actually baked it at home and it was still just as good! Of course, the brick oven would of made it pop, but the ingredients are the same! I am so glad they bought the recipe and the rights because it's not just a name, it's a taste and it's apart of the Hvl community. I was born and raised on it, and I still love it, and everytime I went home, I brought one back.. I now have my 2 and 5 year old asking for it. So they were just as pleased. Gotta Love It!

Now, Greenbriars - - the hush puppies with the white sauce is worth the drive to Hsv from Atl too....LOL! I frequented there as well on Sundays after church.. the new and the old location......

@dash5: I went to Terry's at least once a week while in college. I ate there three times in a week several times. I miss that stuff. I miss the workers just as much. The Star Market on Andrew Jackson actually had (as of last year) the main cook from Terry's on South Parkway. Pizza's aren't as great but still delicious.

People rave about Big Ed's. But they lost their main cook over a year ago (around the time of their move) and now the bowling alley on Redstone Arsenal has one of their cooks; and the pizza is pretty good.

The Mellow Mushroom in Providence has good common pizza and calzones. Tortora's in Hampton Cove has fine specialty pizza's. They are both new places that you may not have heard about being in ATL.

Yep, Greenbriar's white sauce is full of win.

I can't get enough of Tortora's. I wish I could eat there multiple times a week.

I still need to hit up Star Market and try the post-Terry's pizza.

The Arsenal's bowling alley has good pizza, but if I go there for pizza, it's more because of quantity and not quality.

I can see Mellow Mushroom from my apartment, but I still haven't actually eaten their pizza yet. I should maybe check it out.

I've been to Greenbriar's exactly once, but I really enjoyed that one time. The drive there is more demanding than Tortora's in Hampton Cove, though, so that's somewhat of a deterrent. I also have a Beauregard's right by my apt, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of wings from that place...

Sigh. Terry's is my all-time favorite pizza. Nothing else compares. I appreciate the fact Star Market has taken up the cause, but worry that it's fading fast the way grocery stores come and go around here. Like Mad Max, the Road Warrior, Terry's will exist "only in my memory."
