Huntsville, AL on CNN
It’s been a complaint of mine that every time you see something concerning the south in the national news, it either has to do with race, or it involves a redneck in a trailer park talking about how the tornado sounded like a freight train.
I've also been speculating for awhile now that Huntsville is seeing a renaissance of sorts. If you start paying attention, there are all kinds of activities in the arts and music scene around here. This area also has a rich history. I believe a lot of this is being driven by a population that has a higher than average education, and lots of disposable income.
CNN has an article in their travel section specifically about Huntsville that underscores some of this. Its genesis is the movie “Constellation” that was filmed here. It details a lot of the rich culture, and several of the local attractions. Finally, national exposure that isn’t painting us as a bunch of inbred, rock-throwing hillbillies.

Excerpt from the article:
Walker-Pearlman said the film, about an interracial family coming to terms with their past and present problems, needed to be in a Southern city with old-world charm and modern-day advancements. But, he said, he didn't know at first "if such a place existed."
"Most everywhere I went, I could not find my small shining city in the hills in the South," said Walker-Pearlman, who is a native New Yorker with a home in Los Angeles. He says he has since made Huntsville his third home.
"There is almost a European-like energy here where everyone was not just friendly, but engaged. I suddenly had this revelation that what I had put on page actually existed and it was Huntsville, Alabama."
The article goes on to detail local attractions, some of which I was unaware of, and some of which I’ve gotten so used to that I take for granted.
Responding to my own post here, but it seemed like a separate issue. If you haven't visited a lot of these places, you need to save up your pennies and bust out of the Arsenal. How's that car coming?
It's just a matter of finding a beater for ~$1k. I used to have strict guidelines on a car I wanted (no more than a certain amount of miles, CD player, etc.), but now I'm willing to settle for something with four wheels and an engine.
In short: I'm looking.
