The Hushed Casket was founded in 2002 shortly after the launch of the XBOX console. Today the Hushed Casket is a thriving community of gamers, playing together and publishing news and stories that have appeared in major media properties like Newsweek, G4TV, USA Today, and Penny Arcade. Some game developers have even referenced our guides and news to support their gamers. We don't play Halo. We LAN Halo.

Shadowrun: A round-up of previews

Submitted by rapture on Thu, 01/25/2007 - 11:08am.

Get to know Shadowrun:

Disclosure: The following information was taken from information already in the public domain. Below is my attempt to rally that wealth of information together to share with you. This game has not yet been released so it is still in development and everything is subject to change.

(Be sure to watch the Gametrailers.com gameplay footage after you read this article.)

Shadowrun is a first-person shooter coming soon to the XBOX 360 and Windows Vista gaming platforms. It will feature the Live Anywhere service allowing PC and XBOX 360 players to play in the same game. This game is multiplayer-online and supports up to 16 players in a match.

I am really excited about this game. Right now, I will certainly pre-order it (most likely the Vista version). I actually think that this could be a great community game for all of us. It has elements of HALO and Counter-Strike as well as RPG’s and RTS’s. Yeah, it is going to be a different kind of FPS.

Shadowrun resurrection
A team member is resurrected

First you’ll pick your side: the megacorp RNA Global or the resistance called the Lineage. Next, you’ll pick your race: a human, an elf, a dwarf or troll. Each character has different traits. For instance, some run a little faster and others are able to take more damage. Trolls turn to stone when being hit. Elves regenerate their health and have a higher essence level with allows them to cast more spells. Humans can carry more technology. Dwarves take away essence from the players around them.

At the beginning of the game you are given a “buy-in screen and an amount of money. With that you buy items for use in the game. You can buy weapons, magic, or technology. How you spend your money and what you buy will directly affect your teammates and how the later rounds of the game are played. The better you do in the round, the more “bonus money you’ll get after the round to spend on better weapons, more tech or magic.

Shadowrun resurrection
In front of this sniper, a Tree of Life was cast

Some types of magic are resurrection (ability to revive a teammate), the tree of life (a magic tree which gives off health to those around it), and teleportation (the really cool ability to teleport several feet in any direction). Wikipedia states that you can buy magic for “turning into smoke for invulnerability, summoning a monster to do your bidding, casting a field of lethal crystals, and blowing a powerful gust at enemies and objects. Purchasable tech items include enhanced vision, which allows the player to see through walls, a glider, which enables short distance flight, wired reflexes, which greatly increases your physical attributes, anti-magic generators, Smartlink, which gives you greater accuracy and other specific advantages. Weapons include a sniper rifle, SMG, a shotgun, a minigun, a semi auto rifle, a rocket launcher, and a katana for assassinations and ninja style tactics. From a visitor who went to the developer’s office:

Magic

  • Strangle: a growth of magic crystals that hold and suck the health out of any player. Great for blocking doorways or impeding the path of the flag-runner.
  • Teleport: moves you through space about 15-20 feet in the direction that you were previously moving. If you want to go down a level, then stoop. If you jump and teleport, just make sure you hit teleport before you start going down, or else you'll teleport down. Teleport+Glider=flying.
  • Smoke: I don't remember seeing this in action - but this turns you into a puff of smoke, and renders you immune to almost all damage. Sounds like something I could use in L.A. :)
  • Summon: brings a magic creature to life! You can direct it to guard an area, or to attack a specific opponent...and it doesn't stop chasing until either it dies or the player dies. Great fun! Use as diversion tactic, obstacle, or to throw the other team into a random frenzy right when they are about to score.
  • Resurrect: brings your teammate (or you) back to life. The person who does the resurrecting becomes the "lifeline" for the player. If your resurrector dies, then you start "bleeding out" - meaning you've got about 10 seconds to live!!! Best antidote to bleeding out is the Tree of Life...either get under it, throw it down or die :)
  • Tree of Life: indiscriminately restores the health of any player that stands under it.
  • Gust: it's like a force-field or gust of wind that pushes your opponent back and disorients them momentarily. Great at close range against an opponent waving the Katana (or Artifact).

Tech

  • Glider: great when used in combination with teleport - if you Jump, teleport UP, then glide, you'll find yourself flying across the room. It's also good prevention against fall damage.
  • Enhanced Vision: lets you look through walls and see your opponents anywhere on the map. It's great to have one player on your team use enhanced vision and call out the locations of your opponents.
  • Smartlink: this is like a neural connection between the gun and your brain - turns you into a fast-acting killing machine. I didn't get to use this, so I'm not sure exactly how it enhanced the gameplay - but you can see one of the devs using it (briefly) in the gameplay video I shot.
  • Hologram: hmmm.... I didn't get to see this! Not sure how it works, or even if it's in the final build! But sounds like a cool diversion tactic.

Shadowrun resurrection
The glider takes you to a great hight and allows you to glide safely to the ground

About gameplay? TeamXBOX had this to say after playing it at a trade show: “The action in Shadowrun is very fast-paced, especially once the magic powers and tech get thrown in the mix. These are largely defensive and supportive in nature, so you'll still be relying on good old fashioned firepower to take out your foes. Best of all, you can map up to three to your controller at any time, meaning you can find your favorites and string them together. Our personal favorite combo was the glider tech and the teleport magic, which allows you to alternately glide from high areas and teleport through walls to get to your objective. The smoke power is cool, too, letting you turn into a puff of mist to avoid your enemy's attacks, then pop back into solid form to fell him.

Shadowrun resurrection

The artifact is the object of possesion in Capture the Flag-like gametypes.

“Even if you DIE - you can select a player on your team to "shadow" and you get to watch them as they play. You can move the camera around them, and you can shout out warnings, like "there's a Troll right behind you" or "I'm right above you - resurrect me because it's all about me. We found this particularly useful when our teammate was carrying the Artifact (SHADOWRUN's version of the "flag") - we could tell them where to run to avoid getting ambushed, and when to drop it and turn and fight.

Supposedly in the next few months, a demo will hit the XBOX Live Marketplace. Get it and jump in on the multiplayer action.

Hmm, interesting. I'll

Hmm, interesting. I'll definitely be playing that demo that comes out. I'll have to wait and see if this will warrant a purchase as much as Bioshock and Mass Effect will.

More later.

Looks and reads like it'll

Looks and reads like it'll be pretty fun. I like the combination of a FPS with RPG elements. However, after watching the video I'm not looking forward to how fast-paced it is. Reminds me of Quake, UT, and other super-fast FPSs that leave you mentally exhausted. We'll see if the multi-player is good enough to replace GoW/H3 beta.

rapture's picture

I agree. I don't like games

I agree. I don't like games that have fast paces.

Mouse vs. Stick?

It's cool that computer-players can meet Xbox 360-players, but I don't wanna meet a computer-player when I'm playing on my Xbox. Mouse is so much better then a stick when it comes to stearing.

Midnight's picture

I just hope it's not as fast

I just hope it's not as fast as the video of Roo playing UT that you posted a few days ago. That's the kind of fast that is mentally exhausting.

rapture's picture

@ Ricky: I get where you

@ Ricky: I get where you are coming from. KB/M players can move through the maps faster, make quicker turns, and aim more precisely. It is an unfair advantage. However, it appears that there will be some kind of balancing factor applied to the KB/M input device. I have no idea what the factor will be, though.

Bungie added AUTOAIM to XBOX controller users in their HALO games. They take away that AUTOAIM for KB/M users.

With the public release of Vista upon us, look for more news from "Games for Windows" titles including Shadowrun.

What vid?

What vid?

Midnight's picture

Sorry, to clarify, you

Sorry, to clarify, you posted a link that I followed and found a vid of Roo vs Brain in an Unreal Tournament 1v1 competition. It was insanely fast. It actually hurt my head to follow the action.

rapture's picture

I'm just trying to figure

I'm just trying to figure out when I posted that. roo0 hasn't played UT for about a year or so.

Shadowrun dev on YouTube

I added a link to a YouTube video in my post.

In the video a Shadowrun developer gives a walkthrough of the game with voice narration. Explains a lot about the gameplay.

I swear I didn't make it up.

I swear I didn't make it up. Maybe I found it on your blog or cg.

Holy crap. it's a post on your blog from March 2006:

I just stumbled across it on the right side of your blog a couple days ago.

Shadowrun video

More info that I can share.

A cool quote from one of the dev's: "The perfect game is easy to learn, hard to master."

Mintz's picture

That's one of the first

That's one of the first videos I've seen of Shadowrun that led me to believe, "This game looks too complicated with all those magic effects, etc."

Midnight's picture

Complexity allows you to pwn

Complexity allows you to pwn noobs, though. I'm sure I'll want to play this, if not own it. It'll have to compete with whatever FPS (Halo 3?) has our attention to become a staple multiplayer game, though.

Mintz's picture

For FASA's sake, I hope this

For FASA's sake, I hope this game comes out a few months before Halo 3.

Oculus's picture

Multiplayer Shadowrun

My guess, it's absolutely the halo engine in some form or another. Look at the shotgun in 3:44, look at 0:23, it's like they copy and pasted the sniper rifle effects and functionality. That could be a plus. The magic abilities are different... the 3rd person view I didn't get. I'll give it a try fo sho. To be honest, I want to play it because of hearsay.

rapture's picture

Holy crap. This thing scares me.

Oculus's picture

That is by far

That is by far the best looking screencap of this game I have seen.

rapture's picture

Lighting, textures, shading, etc., has gotten the art director

Oculus wrote:

Lighting, textures, shading, etc., has not gotten the art director's approval yet. The next patch will have some of those things updated.

On a side note, a whole lot of new screenshots were released. IMO, the game looks a lot better now.

I'm actually surprised by these graphics. They aren't the best on the 360, but they look really good. I wasn't expecting the game to look better than it does now.

Mintz's picture

That's not something I'd

That's not something I'd want to meet in a dark alley... or anywhere else.

New Shadowrun vids

Here are some new Shadowrun videos: http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/760/760844/vids_1.html

1) They are recorded from the perspective of a n00b.
2) They are an attempt to show off as many SR features as possible during gameplay.

Here's a gallery of screenshots: http://xbox360.vggen.com/gallery.php?game=1527

Oculus's picture

Shadowrun videos

Those look pretty cool. Seeing the game in action shows that the pictures don't really do it justice. I see that the reticle has a method to slow down the KB/M players... it gets bigger whenever the player turns around. Maybe this is their way of leveling the playing field.

Midnight's picture

The torsos of the characters

The torsos of the characters look funny to me. I think the shoulders are too broad in comparison to the waist. Anybody else notice weirdness in the body proportions in general?

Oculus's picture

Yes, that's the first thing

Yes, that's the first thing I noticed too when looking at the pictures a while back. Did you see the last video, the trailer.. Very weird, but not a bad weird. It's definitely a different game than I'm used to.

It is said that sound provides almost 70% or so of a multimedia experience. I say that holds true when comparing the previous images I've seen and then watching the videos. Hearing what is going on makes it seem a whole lot cooler.

rapture's picture

Which character? The human,

Which character? The human, elf, troll, or dwarf?

Slayer's picture

Indeed, they do look

Indeed, they do look funny.

Characters in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th pictures posted in this thread. Don't count videos. The character on the right in the 6th picture is the strangest. Nothing horrible, just a trend I've noticed.
