PS3 Hands-On Impressions
My mother-in-law's husband, Linkoln, has a PS3. Since Christina and I are staying here during our trip, I've had a chance to take it for a test drive.
First impressions:
-The disk drive is like a car CD player, where you push it into a small slot, rather than the 360 where you lay the disc into a tray. I get the feeling the disc is more secure and more difficult to scratch using this method, although it may just be a "grass is greener" issue.
-It doesn't have "buttons" per se. It has sensors. To turn it on I run my finger-tip across a touch-sensitive area on the surface of the PS3. Same to eject a disc. I get the feeling this could break more easily than a button, but it certainly makes a sleek profile.
-Controllers are much lighter without rumble packs in them. They actually feel cheap because of the lighter weight.
-Controllers are wireless, but use a standard USB to Mini-USB cable to connect to the PS3. +1 for Sony for using a standardized connection.
-The controller has a "PS" button that functions eerily similarly to the Xbox's "X" button, although it's about 1/4 the size.
-Setup with wireless internet was a breeze.
-I'm impressed with the PS network interface, given the fact it's 2 months old and free. It has nothing, I repeat: nothing, on XBL, but it is a solid interface.
-Resistance is a neat game, but not revolutionary by any means. Feels a lot like Quake 3 to me. I watched Link play online for a while yesterday, and it looks surprisingly good.
-I'm downloading the Gran Turismo HD demo right now. It's BIG. After I demo that I'm gonna go online with Resistance and give some first-hand impressions.
Overall, I can see why it's more expensive than the 360, but I don't think Sony put that expense into areas that are appealing to mainstream gamers, but rather technology enthusiasts and early adopters. If it gets some good games, I may buy one in 6-9 months.
BTW: Target and EB Games in Jones Valley have several 60GB PS3's in stock as of a few hours ago. I touched them.
Wash your hands.
