I thought it was pretty cool, since the EVE developers only provided the vehicle for these things.. People naturally will join forces and create Alliances and that's what has happened and you get the universe you see in the map.
In their quest for power, people realized they could create super alliances and dominate others.
All of the star systems are Created/Claimed/Defended by real people around the world. I picked the Gallente race, but I really think it doesn't matter what race you are. You can train all sorts of abilities on every race.
