Here is a (Not so sure how current) map of the EVE universe. As you can see, Coalitions have formed out of treaties between multiple alliances, and you can see who and where the lines are drawn in the galaxy. Each alliance lays claim to these particular star systems.

The large red block (the Southern Coalition) was formed from multiple alliances out of a desire to bring an end to the Band of Brothers alliance at the time. Apparently, it looks like they were pretty successful. The Goonswarm Alliance (a member of the Southern Coalition) is now the largest, and was originally formed and is comprised out of frequenters of the SomethingAwful forums.
The space in the middle is "Empire Space" and is where you start out as a noob. You have automated police forces here that ensure a particular security grade for each starsystem that's under control of the Empire. You only get sovereign status if you own a star system I believe.
If your having a hard time keeping up, that's Corporation/Alliance/Coalition from smallest to largest...
My first attempt to get out to the edge of the galaxy probably led me up to somewhere in the grips of the Northern Coalition, where I was completely obliterated when I came out of the stargate..
hmm.. now to pick a Coalition.
